Tihmmnmmish's Very Laid-Back Summery Poolside Threadcast

We have 2 kinds of DNA in our bodies, mitochondrial and nuclear. Most is nuclear and covers most of our bodies functions. In sexual reproduction the offspring has a mix of DNA from both male and female, while mitochondrial is primarily responsible for internal cellular energy functions, and in humans, is strictly from the mother - the fertilized egg destroys the male contribution. So in a sense, we can use it to trace our ancestry back to 'Eve'.
But hey, I'm an earth scientist/programmer, not a biologist. Proficiencied botany and zoology as undergrad to avoid taking classes. Properly studied for one test, smoked pot and drank beer while looking at the book for the other.:D

So really we are a matriarchal society?

...

no matter how differently we see creation, all our perspectives of seeing it are going to be unique. and how cool is that?

you personified winter. this painter painted something intangible, untouchable, not quite recognisable. but both spoke to something deep inside me. how cool is that?

How does that work then? My mother was blonde and my father had jet black hair

Blondness is controlled by what is referred to as a recessive gene. It requires getting it from both parents.
We can illustrate it with a simple example. Lets use 'h' to indicate a blond gene and 'H' for dark hair. A blond needs to have 'hh', which both you and your mother have. Your father had to have a mixture, 'Hh'. Its a process where you take one gene from each parent, like flipping a coin. Your mother's contribution is always 'h', while your father could be either 'h' or 'H', so on average 1/2 their children would be blond and the other half dark. If your father had 'HH' all the kids would have dark hair. If both parents were blond then all their kids would be blond. If both parents were 'Hh' then 1/4 would be blond (enumerate all the combinations : 'HH', 'Hh', 'hH' and 'hh').
As you said, your father's hair was jet black, so the actual genetics is more complicated, but the general idea still holds.

There are three daughters the oldest has black hair, the middle dark blonde and the youngest (me) light blonde

I need a massage! This move is going to kill me!

Why do I have so much crap to pack? (It's a rhetorical question.)

Any comments on this American Oil

Shale is the source rock for oil and natural gas, so its not unreasonable for it to contain a high content of hydrocarbons. In your 'classical' oil field the oil migrates to a porous formation, such as sandstone and is overlain by an impermeable formation so the oil stays in place. Its much harder to extract from shale. Extraction technologies may require using a lot of water. There are several other oil/gas shale plays getting attention onshore in the US, such as the Barnett shale in north Texas and the Marcellus shale running from western Virginia to New York. The Athabasca Tar sands in western Canada are another unconventional resource. Worldwide, I'm sure there are many others.

So the US could be self sufficient ....... but isn't ?!!

The US could be building networks to mass provide energy from sources like the wind and the Sun, but we don't. And I assume that we haven't thus far because the big energy corporations haven't found the way or put time into finding a way to profit from it more than they do from refining foreign oil.

I need a backrub for real. This packing and moving boxes around is a boatload of work and then some.

Maybe I should just bubblewrap myself and send me freight to the new place. Who has a bubblewrap fetish?

I remember that Lauren got a pm years ago from some guy who claimed he would make her levitate. Sometimes guys get a little too into their fantasies and don't recognize how goofy they sound. :D
