Nick Cave's Advice to a Young Kid

In 2018, the Australian musician, Nick Cave started a website called The Red Hand Files. It’s a little platform where he answers questions from his fans. Earlier this year he was asked quite a profound question by a 13-year-old named Ruben.

Here’s the following exchange:

I’m 13. In a world ridden with so much hate, and disconnect; How do I live life to its absolute fullest, and not waste my potential? Especially as a creative. Also, what is a great way to spiritually enrich myself? in general, and in my creative work.

Dear Ruben,

When I read this question, my initial thought was that the kid who wrote this has nothing to worry about, they’re going to be all right. Ruben, you are very smart, you are engaged with the world and I’m not sure what your creative interests are, but you can certainly already write.

Not only that, you are also reaching out for answers. At thirteen, this is all brilliant! Luckily for you, Ruben, I have some! So here goes!

Read. Read as much as possible. Read the big stuff, the challenging stuff, the confronting stuff, and read the fun stuff too. Visit galleries and look at paintings, watch movies, listen to music, go to concerts – be a little vampire running around the place sucking up all the art and ideas you can.

Fill yourself with the beautiful stuff of the world. Have fun. Get amazed. Get astonished. Get awed on a regular basis, so that getting awed is habitual and becomes a state of being.

Fully understand your enormous value in the scheme of things because the planet needs people like you, smart young creatives full of awe, who can minister to the world with positive, mischievous energy, young people who seek spiritual enrichment and who see hatred and disconnection as the corrosive forces they are.

These are manifest indicators of a human being with immense potential.

Absorb into yourself the world’s full richness and goodness and fun and genius, so that when someone tells you it’s not worth fighting for, you will stick up for it, protect it, run to its defence, because it is your world they’re talking about, then watch that world continue to pour itself into you in gratitude. A little smart vampire full of raging love, amazed by the world – that will be you, my young friend, the earth shaking at your feet.

Love, Nick

Happy Tuesday!!! Slept adequately. Morning stuff is done. Looks like it's going be a touch warmer over then next 2-3 days than originally threatened. Hard to believe. We should also have the herd at work again today, less painters, I reckon. Wat will call to get their asses back tomorrow since they'll have half a dozen units to start in.

After coffee . . . .

I'm guessing it frosted at the cabin, but only lightly. No frost at home. Some faint aurora at bedtime and this morning.

Home. Grazing in. We had a productive day, and the site looks a lot nicer than it did this morning. So do the stairwells.

And the development project got its final inspection today. Even the plumbing inspector agreed that the county had given us a hard row to hoe. Motherfuckers!

Windows are open . . . .

Happy Wednesday!!! Slept okay. Feel like I could go back to hit the rack for a bit more, but there's not much coffee onboard yet, either. The old Cat is in his box. Girlcat is resting and Kitten is wandering. Panther is quiet in the other room.

I thought of the development project and then realized that there's nothing to think about except doing some grading and spreading some gravel and paying some contractors. Oh, and collecting rent.

1. Grocery day today. My second favorite day of the week (to Clean Sheets Day).
b. I'm hungry. Doesn't bode well for going grocery shopping.
iii. Went outside an looked at Elon's satellites flying over last night. Both cool and creepy.
IV. While outside, my motion detector light didn't come on, on the back, and my camera didn't come on, on the front. The smart house seems to be getting dumber.
5. Speaking of smart house - tried to install a smart thermostat yesterday. I don't have a C-Wire. So Mr. Amazon is sending me a spool of 18-3 wire.

So You Want to be A Writer?

By: Charles Bukowski

if it doesn't come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
fame,
don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you're not ready.

don't be like so many writers,
don't be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don't add to that.
don't do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don't do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

Cold rain this morning. Not much outside of interaction with two legged snakes is more miserable than cold rain.

That's mid-November 'roun' hyah.

Home. Tying into leftover casserole. It's better a few days later, methinks.

We took a couple of whacks on our inspection today. No matter, work will move on and we'll sort out the tough one. If anyone could do this shit, Wat would be less magnificant than he is.

Happy Thursday!!! Slept okay. Cats are fed. Let the panther in from the storage room into the house. She had been out there for a week and walked through the door on her own steam. There's a bit of growling but not much. It's always fun to introduce a new one to the herd.

Coffee!!!

I checked my sourdough that's been cold fermenting in the fridge all night... I have no confidence it will rise.

Dear sir or madam will you read my book?
It took me years to write won't you take a look?

I prefer the quick method. A pan of water in the oven and a low setting. Maybe there's still a chance.
I've done it on the countertop, but never the refrigerator. It seems counter-intuitive.
