VE seeking advice

Your guess is as good as mine. Obviously she is not addressing me - I'm no gentleman, as any of my ex-wives will attest.

Snoop, baby. Of course you were one of those gentlemen. You know that I love you to death. :D

I've devoted my life to being the antithesis of a gentleman, but I can't pronounce nameltneg--that last syllable is a jaw-breaker

I love you too, CC; gentleman or nameltneg, you're alright in my book. :rose:

I, conversely, will remain one person across the board (would otherwise be known as "two faced"?). I won't be sweet to some and declare war on others (like in an AH "Dear X" letter) and do everything I can think of, underhanded or not, to "win" my war.

I do have a law degree--it's in international law, though, which doesn't have much use here.

I'm happy, though, that as a client, you're perfectly content with your editor revealing for all the world to see that she didn't figure out how to give a "client" bad news before hanging out her shingle. Buyer beware and all that.

Hey sr71plt,

I guess I don't see it as a negative that an editor I am working with is willing to addmit when she needs help handling a problem. It makes perfect sense that she would go to more experienced editors to help her solve her dilema. I want to improve as a writer and I am willing to work with an editor that also wants to improve her skills. I definitely need to improve!!!!!

Dragging this back in the original direction of the thread:
I would seek clarification from the author on how much work they wanted you to do on the story. Politely suggest the plot and characterisations are a tad awkward and/or weak and ask if they seek assistance there, or just with basic nuts and bolts.
That way you are less likely to spend a lot of time on help that isn't wanted or appreciated. You'll also find out what "type" of author you have - one willing to take criticism or not.

On the possibility of a hidden forum just for editors:
How would you choose who to let in?
How would you let new VEs know of its existence without the concept of a "secret society where they all talk about us" seeping out? Personally, I'd rather an open forum where problems like this can be openly discussed (as long as no stones are cast).

You've convinced me. I can see your point for an open story site like Literotica. Writer mentors and new writers learning together is probably just fine and mutually beneficial for a site at this level.

1 You only let in people on the official Literotica VEs list.
2 When someone joins the Lit VEs list you tell them about it.

This is an exact analogy of the Mod's Queue. When I was offered a Mod's job I was told about it, but as I am far too old and wise to accept a job as a Mod (in the words of the old English saying, "all kicks and no ha'pence") I have no access to it.

Re: Mod's Queue. There isn't much to view there, believe me. The Mod's queue serves more as a trash can for thread that shouldn't be in the forums (ie Spam) or old thread that we don't think should be archived.

Re: Your #1. You got it right, but there isn't anything that would keep anyone and everyone to enlist on the official Lit Ve's list just to know what's on that hidden forum with no intention whatsoever to ever do any editing. So, in fact the 'hidden' forum/thread wouldn't be hidden for that many people anyway.

snooper's suggestion is exactly what i had been thinking of

Yeah I do think so. Just the fact that it's hidden would attract even more attention. Stupid, I know...but look at all the forbidden things that people do just because it's forbidden.

You didn't! How could you do such a thing? Don't you know that you can be executed just for doing such a thing?

I don't think any part of a point is that the general reading set would know who sexylaila438 was talking about (unless they identified themselves)--but any of the Lit. writers currently using sexylaila438's help certainly know they are ones in this status (unless sexylaila438 is using an alt here not used with people she's helping--which is possible and would change the whole complexion). The fact that one of the writers she's helping posted an "is it me?" question pretty much obviates the question of whether writers sexylaila438's is currently working with might see themselves as the subject of the question and be disturbed by this being discussed on the open forum rather than with them directly.

Since you ask what an alt would be, I think it would be that you--or even one of the more experienced VEs here--would have asked that the original posting be taken down or take it down and directed the questions--which were quite reasonable questions--to other VEs by PM. I would have said something myself at the time the original posting was posted, if even in a PM to sexylaila438--when it became obvious on of the VEs here or you weren't going to do it. But both you and I know what you would have had to say about that.

I agree totally about not embarrassing a budding writer through the process of this part of the Web site. But the moment Tizah posted, I would have expected it to light a lightbulb over some heads that whoever sexylaila438 was giving help to on this Web site would see the possibility that it was them being talked about behind their back--but in full view of all of Lit. This isn't technically embarrassment, but it ain't good.

And it ain't good that you don't recognize that, I don't think.

Back off, man. LadyC is a wonderful person trying her best to facilitate a loving on-line community that you have set your sights on. She has worked though family problems and has, thankfully, remained a mainstay.

I challenge you to be less of a distraction and more of a help.

Huggs LadyC!

Yay!! I love it when my point of view comes across!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

(Ok so I am easy to make happy!)

Also, maybe an editor should put on their profile that they use other editors to bounce ideas off of and discuss issues that come up. Sort of a fyi before you start editing for them. What do you think?

Well, they'd have to say they bounce ideas on clients' work off other editors in open forums to cover the issue presented here. But, whatever, there's no reason for it not to be a "let the buyer beware" issue. It's only an Internet Web site.

What is wrong with his opinion? I am one of sexy's writers and I knew that it wasn't me, but it could have been. Read my comments to get my take on the situation.

I agree that some of the replies back and forth get off track of the thread and get into personal issues and angry words back and forth. That gets a bit boring, 'specially when you get down and start arguing about a single small comments and words fly back and forth.

I personally think that when someone gives me an opposing viewpoint it jump starts my thinking process. It makes you think about WHY you have the opinion that you do. And sometimes makes you change/shift in your opinion due to the fact that you are learning something new or seeing something from a different point of view.

just my opinion.

Yep, this is what happened to me here, ED--you posted a clear-cut straightforward question (among all the personal attack crap) that actually made me rethink. I work in the mainstream print publishing industry, so my reactions were being what you'd do/not do in the real publishing world. Internet story sites don't need to meet the same standards as mainline publishing (and an author here need only worry about meeting mainline publishing standards if she/he plans/hopes to try to compete in that world). I don't bother to have the stories I post here edited because I think I can clean up my work well enough for this Web site and the readers here--I'm a professional editor. I don't pretend I'll catch everything, but enough not to damage the read they give stories here. So, new writers working with not so new writers here to improve the story to not intrude badly into the read here should be just fine to be posting here, I think.

And don't worry about AS. He's a little strange--a bit small for the throne he's constructed for himself, I think. But he'll probably not change just by pointing that out.

I could point you into a dozen direction as to what's wrong with srwhatever, but I won't. If you stick around long enough, you'll find out by yourself what is wrong with him.

Countless people have said it; he has good ideas, but poor bedside manners. He thinks he's god's gift to humanity and when someone disagrees with what he says, he retaliate with passive-agressiveness.....but don't take my word for it....discover it for yourself.

ETA: Here's one example of what's wrong with him.

Of course if she looks around, she'll see your posting behavior too, "Lady" C. Course you could always bully her; you've done that before. (And unlike you, I won't give her my take on you; I'll let her read in on this board--if she's interested--and make up her own mind.) ;)

Many thanks for focusing your hate on me. Fill me with your venom. I've actually been trying to understand you, although why I've wasted the time I have in doing so now baffles me. Perhaps I thought I could save you from yourself.

You're no SR pilot, by the way. I'm retired USAF and have friends in places, you're just some sorry fuck that is disulliosioned. And I doubt the rest of your story, as well. Time to disappear into the woodwork. I suspect yu won't go easily.

<My threefinger salute>

Bye-bye!

Hooking up with Lady-C.. High-5 hand-slap! Yeah!

This is really quite amusing. You guys heap crap on me for weeks and go ballistic and all "violated huffy and puffy" the moment I let AsylumSeeker know he's as transparent as Saran wrap. :D
