I was surprised at the 35,000 tanks thing, too, and I don't believe it. I think that old boy was trying to impress his kinda-vassal with how effective the Wehrmacht was at destroying them. One upon a time, I read that the USSR built 15,000 tanks in 1943. I doubt that pre-war construction was much more that 10% of that annually, and I doubt that Soviet tank numbers exceeded 10K before the war. But they had more than enough to throw the Japanese a good fucking in Mongolia in 1939.
