What pissed you off today? Mark II

The inability to do introspection to a worrying degree.
Tell me if this scenario sounds at all familiar to anybody:

* It's an important political election season.

* The final two candidates have come down to a corrupt, out of touch, center-right neoliberal and a truly not-smart far right populist with a dead meerkat on their head.

* In the final days of the election, the corrupt neoliberal is only two percentage points ahead of the far-right populist in their projected potential votes.

* Despite the writing on the wall showing that the supposedly left wing party is ignoring issues that the general public is concerned about, as well as the razor thin margin between their projected results, the traditional media is printing story after story about how the corrupt neoliberal has it in the bag.

And how did that end again?

I am of course referring to the ongoing French presidential election.

Wait, what? Five different pollsters are all showing Macron with at least a 20% lead over Le Pen for round 2.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opini...idential_election,_2017#Macron.E2.80.93Le_Pen

MLP got 21% in round 1 vs 24% for Macron, but 55% of the vote went to other candidates who ended up being eliminated. Most of that 55% is projected to flow to Macron for round 2.

And that's why I'm pretty sure Macron will win. But I won't be at all surprised if Le Pen ends up taking the presidency.

If Le Pen strongly markets Macron as a corrupt out-of-touch aristocrat who's just going to be the puppet of big business and billionaires she might be able to flip enough young voters to boost her end result. And don't underestimate how distasteful the French working class find the prospect of even more dumping of foreign immigrants in their suburbs.

I said two because I heard the results were 22% vs 24% in the final voting, apparently I was off by a bit. And I'm not willing to count in the projected transfer of voters from other candidates yet until there's been a flurry of polls over time that show a clear trend toward Macron.

my neighbor;

found it necessary to slam his car doors at 3:05 this morning. Seven times. He wasn't just getting home, but rummaging around in his vehicle for something.

My mother telling me at the last minute that she's going to show up and stay with me today and then bitching about how my house isn't clean enough for her.

If you don't like it, maybe, I don't know, give me more warning you're coming next time? Or, even better, stay the fuck at home.

I can't work when she's here, and I need to be working more than I need to be entertaining her. And when I pointed out that the house is a wreck because I've been working 12+ hour days lately, I got told that "Everybody else can work and clean. I don't see why you can't, too."

Because fuck you, that's why.

Amen to that BiBunny.

Well, someone at work pissed me off today. I elaborate with profanity in the F*** thread...
Expecting them to piss me off tomorrow too. But hoping it will be better.

Yep. They pissed me off. Will channel my energy into something positive though. And I have the day to myself tomorrow which is great.

racoons or some other predator who seems to have cleaned out most of the fish from my pond. omg... i have no words

Co-worker programmed a thing and made some mistakes. (No biggie, it happens.)

Another co-worker went through the thing, documented everything it was doing including all the anomalies that were caused by the original.

Then he rewrote it in a completely different programming language, carefully copying across ALL THE DAMN ERRORS without stopping to ask "why on earth would anybody want this to happen?"

*le sigh*

Someone was trying to look good, but failed miserably!!

(And this is why I was hired 5 years ago by a healthcare company: To find and FIX errors.)

Hm. Strange. I would promote that person if his job was just to port the software to a different language.

The source of every error is the change.

Changing the behavior might trade known bugs for unknown bugs.

Kids taking their moms' xanax and becoming addicted. Kids and drugs in general. Drugs.

I don't think he was trying to show off, just... very detail oriented, not so hot at stopping and asking himself "why are we doing this, why would ANYBODY want to do this?"

That would be true in a lot of cases, but not really applicable here.

Bit more background:

First Guy was working on a project where he needed to show that we could process a certain kind of data in a certain kind of way. For various reasons, it was desirable to work with a fictional data set, so he wrote an Excel spreadsheet that created one.

He documented what it was supposed to be doing, but it has some of the sorts of mistakes that often happen when people C&P spreadsheet formulae and try to change the bits that need changing but miss stuff. It didn't matter for his project, though, because we just needed a data set and the exact values weren't important.

Second Guy was working on another project where we wanted to look at the behaviour of that data processing, so he decided to pick up First Guy's dummy data as a test case, apparently without pausing to evaluate whether it was fit for purpose. For this one we really needed realistic data; spreadsheet-as-documented would have been good enough, spreadsheet-as-implemented was not.

Second Guy seems to have gone through the spreadsheet cell by cell to determine exactly how it was implemented, including all the bits where it didn't match its documentation. But didn't stop to consider how those discrepancies would affect suitability for New Project, or even to ask First Guy whether they were intentional.
