Just about went through the roof today.
I was watching the documentary "Bully" on Netflix. A lot of it had me raging, frankly, but there was this part where some kid was bullying a student...threatening to kill him, break his arm, saying some pretty nasty shit. The principal of the school makes this kid shake hands with the bully. I wanted to jump through the tv and strangle that stupid bitch! She even told the kid he was just as bad as the bully because he didn't "mean it" when he shook hands with this little asshole and THEN she insisted that since everyone shook hands it was all over and done with. FUCKING STUPID CUNT! Yeah...make him shake hands with the piece of shit that just threatened to end his life...yeah. I'm sure everything'll be fine now...really. Great job, principal...you dumb fucking twit. AND this wasn't even the first time she's dealt with this situation with these two!
At dinner I informed my sons that no one...no teacher, no principal, no coach...not even me...has any right whatsoever to make them shake hands with anyone they don't want to nor to accept any apology that they deem insincere and that if anyone has an issue with it they can take it up with me.

Welcome to the World According to Cooperative Knowledge Origination. My experience is that most instructors who use cooperative learning groups are well aware of the distrust that top students have for having their grades depend on the success of a group effort. Again, my experience only, but most folks I know who use CL are sensitive to this concern and will respond to problems if a group becomes completely dysfunctional.
Also, do consider the math. At 20% of your grade, the grade on this project will only move your average by one point for every 5 points of difference between the project grade and your average. So, if you have a 95 on all work apart from the group project, it would take a grade of 65 or less on the project to bring your average down under 90. On the other end, a project grade of 100 would only move your grade up to a 96.
Better to assert yourself and point out to all your slacker group mates that you have friends in dangerous places who own whips and floggers.

Thanks. You are right of course, and this is a good attitude and reminder about the reality for my grade...but I still don't like it. It is just such an inefficient use of time given the content and length of the class. Can I just learn what I need to learn without the collaborative touchy feel good stuff?

Why do I need to be re-taught how to get along with the class? (at this point in my life, I really don't care if I get along wth the class. I'm here to learn, dammit!)
