What Putin wants

Here's a thought experiment for you. Imagine Mexico decided to join an ostensibly defensive alliance, with a group of countries hostile to the US. Imagine this alliance trained Mexico's military, funded it and supplied it with offensive weapons. What do you imagine the response of the US would be?
Not an invasion. Not a blockade. Possibly an embargo.

What on Earth are you talking about?
How many Russian friends, peers and coworkers do you have in your personal contacts?.... How many American friends who've worked in Russia...

The Maritime biz is pretty small, but extremely tight-knit...

Not an invasion.
A pithy response. But I refer your good self to the Cuban missile crisis that almost resulted in the total destruction of life on Earth. The proximate cause? The Soviet Union basing missiles on the island of Cuba. Also wasn't an invasion.

No Russians in Ukraine were being exterminated.
Causing "Mental harm" qualifies as Genocide under UN definition....
Subverting people's culture, language, religion etc... qualifies as "mental harm."
As an attorney, why is a high school dropout having to explain this to you?

Nothing connected with derussification in Ukraine has really been oppressive. It's hard to imagine that as a provocation for this war.

...or those of us already putting in an excess of 84 hours a week...
It's not hard to find... it's actually a simple and effective method called "follow the money."
Pro-Tip.. start with Joe having the Ukrainian prosecutor fired (via extortion, by US Funds) then, move on to his son Hunter's "work history" there, despite him knowing fuckall² about the energy industry....
...or, you're welcome to gleefully keep your head buried in the sand.
You are correct

Hypothetically, let's say PR held a vote to obtain US Statehood and become our 51st star...
A brigade of PR military, swastika tats and all, start terrorizing men, women, and children... schools etc...
Would you say the US would be wrong in intervening?

There is no question of "intervening" -- the U.S. can enforce U.S. law in U.S. territory.

In any case, PR already had that vote. Statehood won.

Some former Soviet regions have voted to rejoin Russia as well... and won... only to see power struggles ensue.

There's an interesting comparison here. In signing the Budapest Memorandum thirty years ago, the Ukraine agreed to GIVE UP all the nuclear weapons they had inherited from the defunct USSR when the Soviet Empire collapsed. In exchange for shipping off a large stockpile of nuclear weapons (disarming themselves), they were given guarantees their territorial integrity would be respected. If Russia had respected that agreement it would have been a great encouragement to nuclear disarmament everywhere in the world.

Unfortunately . . .

And the U.S. response to that was entirely stupid. We put the whole world at risk for nothing. Putin is similarly overreacting to the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO.

Except when it's illegal migrants that Democrats are depending on.......right??

For some MAGICAL reason that's just totally undoable and wrong in every way!!!!

Nobody is depending on those -- they can't vote. And if they ever are naturalized -- which only legal residents can be -- they will not be reliable Dem voters.
