Why do people read erotica?

This is coming from a few comments I've received about my writing and though I think everyone is entitled to their opinions I find it rude when someone is going to basically trash my writing and not even have the guts to put their name to it. The stories I put on here are for enjoyment only and I never post a story until a couple of days after I've written them so it's not like I'm "rushing to get one done" for this site.

I can take constructive critism so it's not that I'm being a baby. I just think if you have something negative to say you should be willing to have your name on the message and give me the opportunity to answer you.

Kitten :catroar:

I had the same experience when I first started submitting stories to Literotica. Every story had some sort of nasty, often very crude, comment by some annonomous reader who didn't have the courage to give me an opportunity to reply. The truth is, not everyone is going to like what I write and that's ok. I just think a reader owes it to the writer, when commenting (negatively) about his/hers efforts to at least include a way to respond. So, I turned that feature off.

I am not the greatest writer - by anyone's imagination - which is why I have never made negative remarks about someone else's efforts. However, having said that, I would definately leave a way for that individual to reply should I have a criticism regarding a story.

By the way, I just read one of your stories (Roommates) and I thought it was good!

Thank you. I have read all the comments here and I thank you all for your thoughts, opinions and advice. I have a lot of room for improvement and with each story I get better so I'm going to keep writing till I tire of it. Thank you all again.

Why criticize

When I am reading an erotic story, I find it keeps the mood better for the story to flow well. When I hit badly words that are spelled wrong, or it is the wrong word it interrupts that flow. Same thing with bad grammar or confusing structure. Also, I find stories more readable if I can picture what is going on, so convoluted positions or sudden introductions of objects/concepts make the story harder to follow.

The question is whether leaving a comment berating someone for any of these issues is always constructive. Often the way the critic makes his/her comments doesn't do any good. Also not all writers are interested in that kind of criticism.

Why?

I love reading erotica as that is how my sexual awakening began at age 11. The joy of it has never left me even though I moved on to great physical enjoyment.

I read erotica (lefthanded, so as to leave my right hand free) because I'm so old, ugly, and ornery that I couldn't get laid if I was the only man at a convention of nymphomaniacs.

What I wonder is: why ordinary people spend so much time reading about, talking about, and (especially, spending hours) writing about sex, when they could be having it!

(or should the parenthetic expression merely be set off by commas, while the concluding dependent clause placed in line with no comma? I'm so confused!)

It's better than politics, cars, and sports. Not everyone will agree, of course.

I think it's just one of those things people talk about. No different than discussing knitting, or what the kids did, or any of the millions of little snippets that make up the everyday conversation.

I tend to write about it *after* I have it. :p

I'm not a professional writer. I write for my own enjoyment and if when others read it they enjoy it then that's great.

Bullshit.

Really… If you’re only writing for your own enjoyment? Why are you posting your enjoyment here? And what does it matter what anyone says about it? Are you sure you’re not writing it in the hopes that someone will respond favorably to it?

When you post your skills in an open forum. And one that is built to not only supply readers, but quite thoughtfully – writers as well? You’re open to criticism. (In the same way as a posting of your thoughts opens you to criticism). The benefit to this is: Enormous!

You did not put your thoughts on paper, send it off, and never know if anyone really gave a damn. Never know if anyone was moved by it. Never know if anyone thought it was good enough to want some more. Never know what may be wrong with it that you hadn’t considered (and had you known you may have incorporated that into what you wrote, gladly). THAT is the point – of here. You might hear something… that will help you improve.

It is not to allow you a public space to throw your tapestry upon and demand that everyone support it. It is here for you to learn. And if you listen, you will indeed learn plenty (we could all use better listening skillz). After all, what you’re requesting is that the readers listen to you. Should you not afford the same respect?

Personally, I think the addition of the Anonymous reaction is a FANTASTIC idea. I ONLY write for reaction. (If I wrote for myself, then I’d go live on Jack Sparrow’s desert island where all my words could be supported by the endless supply of Rum to drink. (And you’re kidding yourself to say otherwise)). When I was quite successful here, they didn’t have the Anonymous option. I got craploads of votes to put my stories in the top 10 for months and months and months, and never really knew why – simply because most people are hesitant to send some unpublished perverted degenerate their Email Addy (let alone take the time to bother). And that’s perfectly understandable, don’t you think?

The Anonymous option erases that concern. It can only afford you MORE feedback. And though you are the creator, and should ALWAYS listen to your inner voice, if reader reaction is consistent in its reaction? You may want to consider what’s being said. If the inner voice says ‘fuck ‘em? Then indeed – fuck them. With an ass walking the opposite direction.

But if you’re posting here out of frustration from reader feedback? Then you simply are NOT writing for your own enjoyment (the most overused term in literature. Right next to the word “amazing” regarding others, in reality TV). And really, why should ANYBODY – only write for themselves? What’s the fucking point? That's no different than that guy who walks down my alleyway everyday, talking to himself. He doesn’t care about response either. You sure that’s what you’re going for?

You put it on a page, because saying it to yourself is not enough. And you want reaction to know you’re not alone. Or at the very least… someone understands.

And is there really anything wrong with that desire? Hardly.

Thank God we’re willing to write it down. Most of them are afraid to. But if that wasn’t the case? They would never have any use for us. As important as I think I am? I’m nothing without them. I’m completely dependant UPON them.

You don’t write for yourself. If you did? It wouldn’t go public. So, what are you REALLY after?

And to answer the question?

I read Eros to satisfy my boner.
And to understand some things I’m not quite sure of.

Same reason I write it.

XX

PS Am I worried now that some will 1-bomb me due to my non-conformist attitude in this post? If I worried about that – I’d never have written any of this shit to begin with. (Do what you will).

PPS Didn’t Gandalf say “FOLLY, you fools?” Too bad I never saw it written down before…

Well said.

I read erotica when it's well written or when I want to get my freak on. I can read a lot for the first reason. I like Marguerite Duras and there's some great stuff here, too. I love reading Perdita. For the second reason, I'll read anything but total shite for about three minutes.

I ask this because I know that I read it for enjoyment and because it excites me. When I read a story I am not in the editing mind and I don't pick a story apart just because the writer may not spell very well. I have a few stories on here and I know sometimes my writing isn't professional but guess what... I'm not a professional writer. I know this doesn't matter to 99% of the members here but I had to post this because it was really bugging me. I do apologize if I've offended anyone.

I agree, most of the time, I skim and scam for the "hot" parts and read those, shit I want to get off not read about how the wind smelled of green grass. (which makes me sneeze anyway)

I think the most erotic are the ones who are very sexual and discriptive about how the veins on his dick throbed when she touched it for the first time. And whe she placed her lips on his member it spouted precum onto her virgin red lips. then when she licked his hard cock she could feel his veins throb with every lick and suck until he was on the brink of cumming and then she mounted his throbing member with her wet sweet pussy and pumped up and down slowly. Enjoying every last inch of his massive cock inside her. Sweet lord she didn't want it to end, it was so good. she went faster rubbing her clit with her slippery fingers.

His hard cock throbbed until he could no longer stand the contractions of her sweet pussy grabbing his dick with every thrust. He grabbed her hair and pulled her close to him and kissed her with so much force it was as if he was fucking her face. and with that passion they came together in an orgy of fucking extasy.

See now that is hot, :D and I can't spell for shit, HAHA

I read it because it turns me on and when nothing else will I come to it. I also like the parts that talk about getting into the sex part, taking clothes off, the actual sex, and what happened afterwords, thats what I look for in the stories.

I donno, I like there to be a STORY behind what turns me on.

I cant even enjoy porn videos that are just one sex scene after another, I like the kind that are a movie with a plot.

You would probably like mine then because I spend as little time as possible establishing characters or setting up a story line. Usually, by the third paragraph the characters are undressing each other and by the fifth para graph, they are going at it.

erotica is not something you casually talk about at the dinner table or with your boss..its private and I read it as it plays into my fantasies.it takes me away sometimes from reality.and I love to see it descriptively and the owrd fuck just when your about make your partner climax or in an intimate setting is erotic not dirty..I enjoy reading and frankl;y writing it.and yes it does make a good stiff dick lol..

Usually my first person stories involve a woman coming over to see the narrator or him going over to see her. The person who is going to the other one's place wears clothing on the way there but it is quickly removed once he or she is inside the other's house or apartment. :D

Well, whew!

I don't know what I'd do if my characters actually had to be clothed for a significant portion of a story.

:D

Why I Read Erotica among other things

I'm glad someone brought this topic up. I write fanfiction and I am enjoying the celebrity section of this site. While proper spelling and grammar make a story easier to read, I don't think a few mispelled words keep the reader from enjoying the story. I also read and write for enjoyment. I know some writer's believe in beta's an so on, but I am an amateur also. It becomes more work and less fun when I have to enlist the services of someone to edit my story.

I too have suffered criticism from people who correct everything from spelling to punctuation, but never tell you about the story itself. It's refreshing to come to a site where I can read for pure entertainment and not get bogged down with writers who take themselves way too seriously.

There, I've said it. I hope I've spelled everything right.

:D

In most of my stories, the characters are unclothed quite early. I would hate to have to write smut otherwise. In some stories, though, especially gay male stories where the sex takes place in a public place, nobody actually removes anything. All they do is sort of open up their pants so they can be sucked off by the guy on the other side of the glory hole or in the movie theater seat. I haven't done it yet, but I could probably write a story about some guy peeking in a window and playing pocket pool, and not taking off any of his clothing.

I am inclined to agree with you about spelling or typos. A few errors don't bother me but when there are many of them, I find it distracting and usually stop reading. If I'm editing for somebody, I always point out such errors.

If you are really interested, you had two words that were spelled wrong and I have highlighted them.

why read erotica

well i read it because I am a single male and I tend to get enjoyment out of online website, but then I find stories do lead much more to the imagination.

I love the sensitivity of the written eroticism.

Bob.
