You know you've spent too much time at Lit when. . .

I'm with you on that one. Insomnia is awful. Get Revluc to give you a foot massage.

Revluc is sound asleep. He went to sleep about an hour ago. One of us has to be half awake to get the little man ready for school.

Yes, it involved the little one and one of those tiny hand-held penicl sharpeners, not the attached to the wall type with a crank handle or an electric one.

Although, Yank, I did have to explain what the word convey meant to a student on Tuesday. The same student, mind you who asked what equality and assume meant.
I sense a pattern here.

Before I say this, I am not bashing people with learning disabilities.

When she asked me to explain the word convey to her, the first thing out of my mouth was, "really"? And she looked at me and said, "well I am LD, you know."

The very first thought that ran through my head was "stop using being LD as an excuse".

But this time instead of defining the word for her, I sat down and had her pick out the contextual clues from the sentence. It turns out, she's never had anyone show her how to do that--or so she says. She figured out what convey meant on her own. Still, I have to wonder why, to this point, she hasn't been taught to pick out contextual clues from a sentence or paragraph until now, if that's actually true.

I'm not sure how well most kids pay attention in reading classes. For the most part they figure out how to answer the questions on the tests and quizzes but may not have learned to consciously apply such techniques as finding contextual clues. Consequently they get passing grades in the classes but have not mastered the skills on a conscious level.

My wife complains all the time that her foreign language students never seem willing to try to figure out an unfamiliar word from such clues. There is definitely a pattern here.

at least she was able to do that. c'mon, you did teach her something, and while sure, it's something that you or i or anyone else takes for granted, you taught her something she didn't know, something valuable that hopefully she'll continue to use going forward. that's pretty damned cool, SJ. :>

as to why she never learned it: maybe she doesn't feel comfortable asking the questions that would lead her to this? if she grew up in an environment where people refused to help her w/ her LD, she might have developed an attitude towards learning that might otherwise be called learned helplessness. is that at all possible here? what was her attitude like when you explained it to her?

Now here i come being a goof, and you guys are all being well behaved. What the hell? i go away for a week and seriousness breaks out. Just kiddin. :D I help out with my 3rd grader's reading classes, and they really stress context clues and that sort of thing in our school. They also are up to their ears in parent volunteers to do a lot of one on one with the kiddos who are struggling.

Now on to the petty silliness for which i am infamous.

My daughter was watching the dog show on tv this morning. Some little cocker spaniel won something--i don't know what, i was trying not to go completely comatose--and they kept talking about how the man who was showing him was an "expert cocker handler". My daughter sent me from the room. All the snickering was getting on her nerves.

Nice.... :p

I was watching FoodNetwork this morning, Semi-Homemade.

She was preparing drinks with a Halloween theme, and said she was going to dip the glasses upside down in some red gunk (to simulate blood). She happily announced she was going to rim them.

she must give a helluva party.

Yeah, but she'd only give you a semi. I watch her and cringe. My son calls her that bimbo who can't cook. I am sooooo proud of that boy. lol

lol. The sad thing is, i know exactly what you mean. Hike them puppies up woman.

I hate how she stuffs large amounts of that food into her mouth and slobbers all over it. I'll admit, i occasionally watch it just so i can be appalled.

Just spent a few minutes on the foodnetwork site and could not see any images of her that belied this problem.

Assuming that I know what you mean anyway, do you not find Greta Scacchi attractive?

Which is why I occasionally watch Rachael Ray. Not appalled exactly, but good Lord, that girl needs a sedative.

Yeah, i can't watch her for too long without the urge to slap her and tell her to shut up. Then again, i'm not known for my patience in a kitchen. I'm a stone cold bitch when i'm cooking or catering. My last catering partner nearly ended up like your av, BG. We were catering on a river boat, and she forgot to put water in the chafer before she lit it.

In the spirit of the thread, my friend's ex husband was fixing one of his son's toys while i was over there. He said, well to make it work, i need a shaft about this big. . . that's all i heard. I started giggling, and then so did my friend. I think he may have just left. . .

I loved her in "The Red Violin".

Don't ever watch her daytime talk show. It's a perky show with a perky host taped before a disgustingly perky audience.

*shudder* Don't worry. I won't. lol. I'm usually perving around on here instead of watchin the tube.

saucy, bg: what if her perkiness is part of the appeal? besides, she's pretty. Lo

YKYSTMTALW: perkiness refers to parts of a woman's anatomy, not her behavior!

I'm not saying she isn't pretty. The only show I watch of hers is 30 Minute Meals because I generally like her recipes.
