Well it depends on various factors, mostly what they call themselves and the majority of their songs.

Def Leppard are known as Heavy Metal/Rock.
Iron Maiden as Heavy Metal.
Megadeth are more Thash Metal, but also Heavy/Speed Metal.
Slayer mainly Thrash Metal.
Motorhead say they are Metal.
Judas Priest as Heavy Metal.
Metallica are a combination of Thrash/Heavy/Speed Metal and Hard Rock.

Other than Megadeth and slayer, you've described my CD and LP collection.

I like them all, but put Def Leppard down mainly because there is a song that means something special to me an a special woman, but also because they come from my home town.
I like heavy metal, not thrash or speed.

I just think of Def Leppard as hard rock, borderline glam rock...like Poison, Great White etc...but are/were more successful and likely because it was "mellower" than most of their peers. I put Def Leppard in the same vein as say...Bon Jovi or even Van Halen. Less hardcore than Motley Crue. And certainly less hardcore than Maiden, Slayer etc
