🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

What do you think is more important, sleep or exercise?

Lately, I’ve been struggling with finding an extra hour in my day to workout, but also not wanting to get up an hour earlier knowing that I will be tired all day if I do.

Obviously, both are important but which do you think is more beneficial overall?
I think they are equally important. If your body doesn’t get a chance to recover from your workouts with sleep, then the workouts are going to suffer. It’s a tough balancing act. I usually choose to suffer on my bedtime than wake up earlier to get a workout in.

This is a great question.

I’m not sure what the right answer is. I will say that I’m choosing sleep, though. I’m not doing much exercise. I’m walking some. I keep trying to get myself into a normal exercise routine but I’m failing. Work is kicking my ass and it’s coming before everything else right now. So, sleep is my choice if I choose between the two.

I found myself falling asleep at work the other day. Sitting at my desk, my head falling forward, and I woke up as I felt myself lean forward.

I think if I exercised more regularly, forced myself like I know I should, it would balance out other areas of my life. I would sleep better. I would manage stress at work better. So, I know what to do. It’s just doing it that’s difficult.

Also, things that used to work for me aren’t really working anymore. It’s true that your body gets used to a routine and then adapts. It’s always an adjustment. So I just have to figure out the next step I will make, literally and figuratively.

So. That was a long winded way of saying -for me, right now, sleep.

Same. But I was standing. 🤣

This is what I think too. I have a feeling if I skip an hour of sleep and force exercise, it will become normal, but it’s so damn hard to get out of bed!

If only there was a way to exercise in bed! 🤣

I never get enough sleep, so that’s always the winner for me. So I’ve adapted and don’t even try to do morning work outs anymore. I am just not a morning person and that routine will never work well for me.

Instead I work out in the evenings. If I’ve been in an off phase, evening walks are a great way for me to just start with something easy that doesn’t require much motivation. It’s relaxing and stress relieving plus I really enjoy the quiet time and enjoying the weather (except winter 😂)

Then once I’m back to making any exercise part of my schedule, rowing right after work on the days I’m working from home is my next step. It’s a routine that only takes a couple of days for me to get into because I enjoy it so much. Once I’m in the groove, I find it easy to keep up and then vary what I’m doing.

After eating greasy fried food at an amusement park yesterday I put in a long sweaty workout this morning and finished with some skill practice on my skates and it felt amazing.

A few days ago I got a new sticker in the mail for my helmet but when I went to apply it today realized it's too big. 🥺 I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it now but hopefully I can get a smaller one to put on my helmet.

Love the sticker! Maybe your water bottle?

The answer is likely sleep, but it really depends on how much sleep one is getting regularly. Most people already aren't getting enough sleep, so trading an hour for exercise isn't going to help long term. But for people who are getting 9-10 hours, different story, you can likely make that trade.

Either way, your body will tell you, just have to listen to it.

Plus the seasons of everyone's life change. Sometimes you just won't have time for the consistency you want and we have to be kind to ourselves in that time, do what we can, even we can, and get back to the consistency we want when the next season rolls in.

The weather has improved immensely! God dag! 😘

Halløj! Haha, I think we might have jinxed it.. ☔🌧️🌬️ I mean, windy, rainy and chilly does have its own merits as well.
Ideal weather for hygge and making æblegrød. 😉😙

Windy but sunny and a spectacular view! Hope your run was good Cat!

I had another 4.5 miles yesterday with a 22 minute tempo pace in the middle of it.

It was a steady and calm run, aiming for a steady pace at 6:40 minutes per km. Ended with 6:28 minutes per km, for 7 km. Not complaining.

My goal is not really to run fast, that is easy enough, but to keep my HR under control. My Max HR is about 220 bpm and my resting 56 bpm.

But I am prone to headaches when my HR gets much above 180 bmp when running, so.. the name of my game is: slow down, steady & easy, staying under 175 bmp.

Maybe not how I want to run, but it is what I need to learn to enjoy.
Because, I really love to run!!

I was just talking to someone about how much more in tune I am with my body now as an older athlete, than I was in my “prime” athlete years. BTW, I throw the term athlete out very loosely, lol. Breathing, heart rate, running and cycling forms, I’m so much more in tune now than I have ever been.

Also, your HR range is insanely good!! My resting is mid 50s and my max is 189, with an easy running pace around 150 and cycling is around 130. 220!!🤯

Yes!!!
I agree, wholeheartedly agree!!
In my younger days.. breathing, the correct form.. I never thought much of it.
Mainly because it came so naturally.. But still, there is a qualitative difference between knowing what you are doing and understanding what you need to and just going it, because it feels right.

It is so much easier now to fine-tune those small, but oh-so-important components in your workout, enabling you to reach the next level.

In some regards, I am not even annoyed with my age and experience. 🤓

Your HR is not bad at all! Wow.. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

I know mine is a bit out of normal range. 😅
My heart has been MRi scanned, ultrasound scanned and examined backwards and forwards.
It is pretty darn strong and healthy.. Just a bit weird. 🫀

The kind doctors even tried to lower my HR with beta blockers.. that might have been the most woozy and unpleasant run ever! Needless to say, that did not work.

My point is: we do not all fall into the standard scheme, and most of us got our own things to work with.
This is one of the reasons why I like this thread so much!!

There is room for everyone, and you can always count on someone here to cheer you on. ❤️

I completely agree, it doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you are doing something. Anything is a step towards a happier and healthier you, and that looks different for everyone. This is a great thread for support and to bounce ideas or questions off of.

New month and a new workout plan, I’m trying to be more diversified. I did a HIIT workout with the main focus being legs. A bunch of different squats and lunges, etc. I also went for a 2 mile walk hoping to move out some lactic acid. I can report this morning that there is plenty of lactic acid built up, I’m sore as fuck! 😂😂

Ouch! All stiff robot legs today? .... So, if I asked you to pick up the apples from my lawn, you would not jump up in glee and joy? 🤭

Okay, but in all honesty: @mobleedzblue, you need to stretch!! Especially your hips. They are the culprits when it comes to a lot of pain, and having done HIIT with focus on legs, lunges and squats, they will be tight.

You should definitely spend about 20-30 minutes today stretching. Not too far!! But finding that Goldilocks place, and breathe into the different stretches. 🙌🏻❤️

Im not full on robot legs and picking those apples up would probably stretch them out and feel good. The plane ride over on the other hand will definitely lock them back up, lol.

I will definitely be stretching throughout the day at work with a good stretch when I get home. It’s a good sore really, tells me I worked hard. I’m not completely useless today because of it.

Last night was derby practice. I earned my first bruise but it wasn't from contact with another player. I was sprinting around the rink, fell on the curve, and landed on my thumb. Nothing is broken but I've got a nice purple thumb tip lol. We did a lot of pack skating, learning to move as one unit, weaving, and then we practiced falling, and hitting each other within the pack. I think everyone skated off the rink after feeling like they had been worked over, it was a tough one! I'm learning to run on my toe stops as well to get a running start before a sprint. It's all really starting to come together! I have a feeling our second skills assessment will be within the next week or two. Fingers crossed it all goes well! 🛼🛼
