2008 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

Erin, it's a nice picture! I can't blame you for not posting your face, though I seriously doubt your face would scare anyone. I wouldn't want my face on here either... someone might track me down. lol

You never know, the way this winter's going, there might still be snow days after March 17!

Erin, I like snow days because I can write, but I don't like them because I don't get paid for them. I can't wait to get a real teaching job instead of just teacher's aide.

*Waves magic immunity wand* Give Erin an immunity!

This thread was quiet yesterday! Hope everyone got lots of writing done :D Though Boxlicker and SPA were probably busy with other things... lol.

Here, the students have to have a certain number of school days per year, so any snow days have to be made up at the end of the year. Teachers get paid for snow days, but teacher's aides don't. The school district where I work has used 9 snow days this year (there were only five built into the calendar), so we'll be going to school till June 24, I think. The district I live in, where my kids go to school, have only used 4 or 5 days, so they'll get out in June well before I do.

Some of the categories are hard to fill. I've filled 30 of them, 32 if you count the illustrated poem I've had pending for almost a month and the fairy tale for the modern fairy tale chain. I've had two immunities, and I'll probably use immunities for the audio text and audio poetry categories.

Illustrated and audible entries take much longer to approve, one more hassle with them. A month seems like a long time, though. :( Maybe the Valentine's Day contest had something to with that.

Boxlicker, I thought of that, but I submitted it the day after the Valentine's contest ended. (Checked my spread sheet after last time I posted to be sure of the exact date; I keep a spread sheet of all the stories I've written because otherwise I'd be way too confused.) So it hasn't been quite a month, but it does seem like it's taken a long time. I know it has to be reformatted, though, so I'm trusting it'll show up eventually. lol

I immunitied out of the Illustrated Text category, fortunately.

Thats cool you have a spreadsheet. My system is that once I write a story I put it into a chart in a word document so I can quickly see how many stories and in what categories I've filled. Once I submit it (I have an editor look over it first) I put it in my scorecard but only add the points when it's approved.

Erin

I wish I had set mine up in a spreadsheet instead of a table in a doc. There have been many times I wanted to sort by different cols. I'll probably convert it soon anyway. Mine is pretty simple. I manually update the total reads for each story and have the table total it all up. I also have it track the daily delta per story. THAT has been interesting. The range is WILD. I've been tracking it since 8/06 and have yet to see a reliable pattern. Some holidays have very high hits, some near zero, of course.

Too bad we can't DL them. LIT has the stats, but it would be too much to ask them to track ALL our stories. Wouldn't it? :D

I did suggest once that a small, simple graph be added to our summary page that shows the last x number of days of readers.

I'm not coordinated enough with my spreadsheet to use it to track votes or anything, though I've thought about trying to figure out how to do that. I just use it to keep track of the date I finish writing each story, the date I submit it, and the date it's posted, as well as the category. I also have a Word doc where I keep track of which categories I've filled. I have a thing for lists. lol

Erin, cool about getting your stuff for school. I bet your students will be glad to see you!

Sweeps don't kill views, just votes, and therefore affect the score.
The reason your new stuff has votes but no views showing is that the vote count is updated on the spot, the views counter only updates a couple times a day.

Suddenly, I feel like a lawyer.

"Keep in mind that these rules are currently under review and may be altered within the next few days."

I haven't checked this thread since I joined the contest.

I was wondering about the above sentence written in bold red if that was there from the beginning of the contest or if it is something new and if the rules have already been altered or will be altered and what were the changes in the rules or what will be the changes in the rules.

Gees, suddenly, I feel like a lawyer.

That sentence was there already. If I remember right one new change was the date for signing up for Survivor. I think they settled on Mid-October.

Does anyone know if there's a "subscribe" function for comments on our stories? I can't remember how many there were LAST time I checked them, so I miss new comments.
Am I missing something?

Seriously? RHF? 89,580 posts? Really??? WOW!

Nope, unfortunately.
The only way to catch new comments is keep track of how many you have via your submissions page. Clumsy at best.

Personally, I have found that if I post a comment on a thread, I am subscribed to that thread, and will be notified by email when somebody else adds a comment. That's besides having the latest addition posted on my CP. If want to unsubscribe, I click "unsubscribe" and that's it.

As for comments on stories, there is apparently nothing. I have enough stories posted that I can't keep track of how many PC I have on any one of them. I look through occasionally, because I like to respond, and sometimes find a new comment, but I know I don't locate everything.
:(

Exactly my point. It really kills the usefulness of reader comments if we keep missing them. Maybe it's planned for a future update? If not, let's get it in the Q. :cattail:
