A monster in the making.

Acquiring the tools available in the arts is not an overnight endeavor
and would do little to enhance a beginner's ability to harm;
by the time they reach that level they are armed
with self-respect, self-control and respect
for others. I know it helped me
and many kids that I taught.

And the difference between you and an already out of control kid is...?

Someone has to give a shit in the beginning in order to set the stage for it by instilling the work ethic and minimal discipline needed to simply begin. It's so much easier to hook up with a gang and blow somebody away with a stolen or illegal gun and a little finger pressure.

I was that out of control kid.
The Marines and the Martial Arts gave me a new moral compass.

I could be wrong, but I suspect the Marines came before the marital arts. Or not that much afterward.

Even if it didn't, the controlled environment of basic training probably did more to change your attitude than 3 days per week shouting "HAI!" in a group of other kids all bent on showing each other that they're the Kung Fu master and not you.

Bad apples are bad apples. You can't even make hard cider out of them.

I started taking lessons on base right out of boot.
I wanted to before that, but my parents shared your views
on the type of people who become dedicated to martial training...

And when you think about it,
the Marines are all about martial training...

As an aside, I haven't seen a real King Fu master last more than a minute with a trained MMA fighter.;)

Just to clarify, their training has differing goals...

;) ;)

It's like trying to compare the Air force to the Marines.

PS - I trained every single day...

I was very dedicated.

Three days (/hours) a week is not dedication.

As I suspected was the case.

I actively practice Tai Chi. I'm self taught but I understand the discipline and the idea behind the art and use it to control my aggressive nature.

I am not a Taoist I will never be someone who will choose enlightenment over correction. I understand myself and I can recognize those same traits in others when I see them or read about them.

This kid needs a healthy dose of the Marines, not martial arts skills. At least, not at first.

And of course we all know who sits up front in the big boy seat and flies the plane, right? (poke, poke) :D

If you count wrestling, which I do,
I had a lot of experience before the service...

Do you think Chief Joseph would have uttered his famous words at 14 when he was being taught how to fight and go to war?

Or did it take the US military chasing him and his people to exhaustion for him to see the light?

Haven't seen any Karate black belts or Aikido masters survive either. Maybe survival isn't one of their goals. The mythical supremacy of these disciplines have been overly hyped by the entertainment industry, preying on general ignorance, for decades. This is being proven all over China by this man:

The closest kids get to the military here is cadet vlub, which is basically scouts but with better uniforms.

The military wouldn't take him anyway. 100%, even if he was old enough, even if there was national service or the draft.

Then tell your friend to not waste her time. Let him run wild then turn his criminal ass in to the cops as soon as she can and be done with it. End of problem.

I wouldn't say that because, for all my flaws, I'm not a completely callous arsehole who believes children are disposable.

<--- Ass. Not "arsehole".

The rest is accurate enough to not quibble over it.
