Although I have a tendency to overdo the frog's eye view occasionally, or so I've been told... then again, it was just my friends getting tired of me searching for that photo op.

Hmm - the girl was just me making a case... but - as it is getting late, I'll be signing off and going to the pub slowly. So, here's another pic - ad memoriam - from a village up-valley.

Good night folks!

I always wonder about those gates, so ubiquitous in these old fortifications, from Austria to Paris to Quebec. They are obviously modern-ish add-ons. What did they replace? Was the archway merely open or was there some ironbound bivalve portal?

Actually, the portal in question is part of a festival and hung in midair. Otherwise, the gates were actually barred steel or iron gates. Not that modern really. However, all the castles that are still "intact" have certainly been "upgraded" throughout their lives, getting refurbished and so on.

Usually you had a portcullis (the drop gate) as well as wooden ironbound bivalve doors - or better yet a drawbridge. Beyond that you usually had a gate tower with another set of doors.

The castle I posted (Spiš) actually had three courtyards, thus three gate towers in the walls and then an additional two gates within the main keep itself. So, 5 gates all told. Difficult to get in!

In the Grand Duchy there was an elaborate set of fortifications in the cliffside near the capital (Luxembourg) that was hard to even get near the gates of. A lot of these engineers were very clever, sometimes, constructing their strongholds.

I was referring to the barred gates in the near background of your diagonal view, I assume in a coutyard. Do you think they made those clean, parallel bars when the courtyard was built?
