The rather large residence was rather quiet on this Saturday afternoon. Peaceful, with the clouded sky allowing one to enjoy their time outside without concern for shielding their eyes from the sun. That was what the dark haired martial arts master, Hiroto Tanaka, had been doing for a good half hour now; sitting upon the patio after taking a break from his daily exercises. Behind him, the proud structure of the Kobayashi Dojo stood firm, encircled by the four corner walls which allowed its occupants and visitors the privacy needed for outdoor lessons and classes.
Master Hiroto, one of the founders of this dojo, gazed out into the sky as time passed, listening to the occasional sound of koi fish swimming about within the nearby pond built on his property. It was getting long in the day by now, and while the man said nothing at the time, his thoughts reflected on the running late guest which he expected to arrive at any time now. It would be interesting to see his own Master's only child again after so long, especially after some of the stories he'd been told by the mother.
Outside of the large structures boundaries, a young man in his early twenties was walking down a concrete path between two buildings while looking over a map of the city which his mother gave him. Logan Kobayashi had been to Japan in the past, yet spent much of his life living in the United States where his father moved after falling in love with a young American who was studying abroad. Shin Kobayashi began to teach his son the basics of martial arts at an early age, but unfortunately passed on while the young man was barely entering his teens, and hadn't the chance to finish his the boys training. Add that to the grief and anger which comes from losing a loved one, and it's little wonder that young Logan had a history of disciplinary problems.
As he took note of how close he was nearing to his desired destination, Logan reflected on those final years of school, where his attitude problems resulted in many altercations with other boys. And while the then teenage fighter had enough sense to hold back when needed, it resulted in a bad reputation which haunted him even after maturation started sinking in for the young man. One that his mother was worried would pull him back onto the wrong path within the coming months. In response, he was talked into traveling across the globe, to live in the dojo named after his father, and finish training under the man who trained underneath his old man many a year ago.
Still, as the young man finally reached the large doors of the dojo's entrance, he let out a long sigh while gripping at the strands of the duffel bag slung over his shoulder. This was a big step for anyone, but he promised himself to go through with it and make up for the shame which he brought upon himself and his family name.
"Well, this is it...." He muttered while reaching out for the door, grabbing at the surprisingly heavy door knocker and letting it slam down onto the door several times before waiting for any response.
The young foreigner didn't have to wait long, however, as the large doors were pulled open at the same time from the inside. Judging by the size of those things, Logan expected at least two people back there; one handling each door. Instead, he was greeted by a single, deceptively strong older male whom was handling each door with one hand like it they were nothing.
It'd been close to a decade since the two had seen each other in person, but the other man had clearly taken good care of himself, which made it easier for the visiting male to take an educated guess, "Mr. Tanaka?"
The other man looked over his visitor, a calm smile marking his rugged features while welcoming the son of his departed Master, "Logan. My, how you've grown. It's been years! Come in, come in."
The dark-haired man took a step aside, allowing his young charge to enter before closing the gate behind them. Their initial talks involved the usual small talk expected of all acquaintances wishing to break the ice. Questions about how Logan's mother was doing. About how the dojo was holding up with their weekday classes for helping to pay the bills. Hiroto also allowed the teen a chance to take in what he could see of the outside courtyard from their current location. But all of this was only delaying the inevitable, as the older of the two got down to business.
"But enough of that for now, Logan." The older man stated, his demeanor taking on a noticeably more serious turn as he turned toward the silver-haired youth to explain, "You understand why you're here. And the fact that you agreed to come from such a great distance says a lot about your commitment. But are you ready to do whatever we say without question or backtalk?"
"Er, I can't exactly promise anything on the questions and backtalk part, Mr. Tanaka." He responded with a smirk, mostly joking, but also knowing that taking orders from others wasn't always his strong point. The young visitor did, however, seem to understand the gravity of the situation as he let out a sigh; gazing over at the other male while swearing, "But I do intend to try my best. I don't wish to disgrace my father any further."
The hint of a smile played at the corner of Master Hiroto's lips. There was potential in this kid, and he hoped to see a marked change during the time spent living under their roof. But first things first, as the old saying goes. Taking a few steps away of the young man, the skilled martial artist raised one arm and made a 'come on' pose with his hand, "Strike at me."
The sudden look of surprise on Logan's face was almost humorous, but Hiroto showed little sign of amusement on the outside as he elaborated, "Don't worry and don't hold back. I simply wish to see an example of your form in a combat situation."
It was somewhat understandable why the young man was reluctant to do anything at first. The one challenging him, while he may not look it, was close to a good twenty years his senior. And age aside, Logan knew well enough to expect nothing short of the best out of a former student of his old man. Still, as he almost reluctantly dropped his bag onto the grass, the silver-haired youth was prepared to honor his request.
"Okay. If that's what you want." He stated in an 'I hope you really can handle this' way; stretching out his limbs a bit and cracking his knuckles for effect before preparing to attack.
Watching the young man get into a pose he'd used hundreds of times, Hiroto could already tell this would be a short skirmish. There were far too many openings already, and once Logan went at him, the lack of grace in his 'style' was almost embarrassing for one with trained eyes like himself. Still, as the young pupil came at him with a clenched fist, the older man refused to relent by brushing aside the blow with a swipe at the wrist before gripping around his shoulder and, using Logan's own momentum against him, flipped the youth onto the ground in one fluid movement.
From Logan's point of view, the entire encounter happened too quickly for him to keep track of everything. In one moment his first blow was deflected with surprisingly little effort, then the next he was flying through the air before the chance to think of a follow up maneuver could even enter his head. In the end, the younger fighter was left laying on a very sore back, gazing up at the clouds with a dumbfounded expression on his face as he tried replaying the events in his head. It was only when Hiroto stepped over leaned over to stare at the fallen man that his attention returned to the present.
"You're putting too much focus on your power and not enough on your form. It's sloppy and full of openings." He explained to his new pupil in a calm voice, giving a reassuring smile as he reached out a helping hand while noting, "We'll have to work on that during your time here."
Shaking out those last cobwebs, Logan almost reluctantly reached out to accept his help as he pulled himself back to his feet; trying to deal with both the injury to his body and pride while replying with slight sarcasm, "Ugh. Yeah, I'm...ouch....I'm really looking forward to it, Mr. Tanaka."
Helping him up and patting his back a few times to assist in knocking off some dust, the martial arts Master quickly corrected his new pupil, "If you're going to be staying here, Logan, then you'd best learn to use the title of Master when addressing me from here on out."
The young man blinked a few times at this, but caught on fast enough to ignore the lingering pain in order to bow in respect for the older male, "You're right. My apologies, Master Hiroto."
Smiling, Hiroto nodded in approval before turning away in order to get back to business, "Good. Now then, let's get you settled in and introduce you to your new housemates, shall we?"
"Don't I get a minute to make sure you didn't break anything?" Logan asked in a mostly joking manner, only to promptly correct himself as his new Master flashed him a stern glare; causing the slightly slouching male to stand at attention, "I mean, I'm right behind you, Master."
Taking a moment to retrieve his duffel bag, the young man took another lingering look around his new surroundings; letting out a heavy sigh as he pushed away any doubts on whether or not he was doing the right thing. For better or worse, as he followed the dojo Master's lead, the young man knew that he wanted to do his best in seeing this entire thing through to the very end.
