Another Democrat Threat To Freedom Thrown Out

The Germans expected their guys to be shooting shit at 1500 meters? What war did they think they were fighting?

I've fired the rifle out to 1000 meters. Although with open sights I wouldn't expect to hit a man sized target without divine intervention, or dumb luck, I can assure you that the bullet strike will be close enough to have you, or anyone of sound mind, eating dirt.

My rifle has the std. reverse 'V' sights. Notched rear, 'V' front. A shooting buddy fitted his with peep sights and was deadly out to 700 meters. I'm quite certain that with quality telescopic sights that the rifle would be even deadlier.

I have a Brno chambered for .280 Improved that will consistently peg a man sized target out to 1000 meters and a La Coruna in 25-06 that will drive nails out to 500 meters. Both of those rifles have been highly modified, new barrels, roller triggers, cross-pinned action mounts and floating barrels. But the original actions are essentially unmodified.

Sure, but WWI was a war of assaults and trenches. 19th century tactics. Right? I guess I just wonder why they thought anyone would ever be shooting at stuff from that far away, especially if as you say, it's unreliable beyond 1000, even in the hands of what says he is a great shot, calm and reposed at a range. Everyone was already eating dirt, what with gas, mortars, artillery, machine guns, etc.

It was a static war of attrition.

You have to expand your thoughts here Perg. First of all, all targets are not men. The rifle was/is perfectly capable of hitting a truck at 1500 meters, and doing damage. Further, there is a psychological advantage given to the man that has a rifle calibrated to that range. And even if they miss but get close, well?????

It encouraged the troops to take that shot, a lot of troops to take that shot. Odds where that someone was going to get lucky. And because several were shooting at once, and there was no way of knowing who actually 'made' the shot, confidence spread geometrically.

The '03 had the same sight calibration. And was equally as accurate.

Okay, fair enough. Modern warfare seems to have forgotten most of that.

Statisticians got involved during Viet Nam. That was almost entirely close quarters battle and in that scenario quantity of lead in the air was more effective than quality of aim. And to an extent they were right. The assault rifle also has distinct advantages when you are able to close to 200 meters or less.

On the other hand, in places like Iraq, outside the urban areas. they actually brought the M-14 back into service. The military isn't trumpeting that fact. :)

Modern urban battle is beginning to be centered on the sniper teams as well. And they are all armed with 'archaic' bolt action rifles in non-standard chamberings.

Modern infantry battle is evolving into a well blended mixture of the precision marksman and the close quarters assault squad(s). At least as far as asymmetric battle is concerned.

Yup. Friend of mine carried an M14 in the 'stan. He loved the thing.

Sure is. That was the entire focus of our training. When I wasn't on an assault team, my mortar squad was working with snipers on overwatch. I'm glad I'm not the enemy. Lots of guys were being sent to sniper school and "squad marksman" school.

I'm off to bed dude. Thanks for the dope on the pistol.
