I used to be really awkward at accepting compliments so I do know how you feel. I can't say I'm an expert these days but I've learned to spare the feelings of others as well as myself.
Generally, I just say 'thankyou' in a sincere tone. If I start contradicting the compliment of being self-deprecating, it either looks like I'm fishing for more praise or that I have the self esteem of a bipolar slug, which makes people feel uncomfortable or worse, pitying. If they're being sarcastic it should be obvious so if there's genuine ambiguity, I give them the benefit of the doubt. If they were trying to be snarky, they've failed and if they were sincere, I haven't torn them a new one for no reason.
The other response is a counter compliment but only do this if you're sincere and it's justified. Otherwise they'll wonder if there's a hidden joke or insult and you could be there all day.
