(Just a suggestion. This could even be evocative of the aforementioned stealing of Ummi from Avatar Kuruk. They're both even Tribeswomen, Katara and Ummi.)

I mean, Iroh'd be able to see the thing, but only Aang would be able to stop it. And his momentary indecision mid-Energybend would be sufficent distraction for him to be no longer Unbendable.

Theoretically, 'Zula could just yank his Avatar-level Firebending right out of him.

And, yeah, I'm cool with Katara getting hurt, so long as it's plot.

Oh, geeze, yeah.

Forgive me.

I had an idea a couple of days back. (It might have been yesterday? It seems so long ago. Kind of a lot's happened since then.)

That all the dark madness gathered here might have soured the local Spirit World. Very much like the pollution and destruction of that forest enraged Hei Ba, maybe so much negative energy... unleashed like this... with utterly deranged Azula at the head of it... would cause The Spirit World to respond in kind. Become deranged.

Or maybe not all of the madmen are truly mad, maybe some of them are instead maligned by dark Spirits.

In any case, whatever the medium of their arrival, my concept would be that there's dark Spirits in the vicinity, right now as Expanded Team Avatar fights Crazy 'Zula's Mad Horde. And, much like Koh stealing the face of Kuruk's wife, one such Spirit takes the opportunity to attack Katara to get back at Aang.

(Whether this is because Aang's just such a goody-goody, and represents Balance, or whether it's more of a specific slight against that specific Spirit, that I don't know. But he sees The Avatar's Consort, sees The Avatar, takes the opportunity.)

This attack would be by its very nature Spiritual; it would attack the fibre of Katara's being.

Now, while Iroh can see Spirits, as he's been to The Spirit World before, it's my understanding that only Aang could really combat such a creature on a Spiritual level. Thus, if the attack took place in the middle of Aang's Energybending Azula, none of the others would be able to help her, Aang would be struck with indecision, the Energybending would be interrupted, and thus we have opportunity for Aang's power to be inhibited and Azula's power to be vastly increased.

(This isn't making any sense, is it?)

I think I went overboard with Xia's post. Threats of Martha Stewart zombies aside, I may still go back and edit. (I dunno. She's just trying to live, you know? She just doesn't want to die.)

And the Spirit thing... I'm probably thinking way too far outside the box.

But my eyes... thank you. My eyes are really dark. I got asked out once on the basis of that alone, that was pretty cool.

Next question is how to get Azula in Aang's vacinity. Right now she's parrot-perched on Ji Fen.
(Though I suppose that leaves the opportunity for Zuko or Aang to kill Mister Firebreath.)

Considering how fast Airbending Masters can move, it shouldn't be hard for him to catch up with the pair. But poor Zuko may have to relive his less favorable Blue Spirit memories by going piggy back or letting Aang carry him.
