Does polyamorous have a good antonym?

If being polyamorous is how someone feels, and being a swinger is what someone does, then the online suggestion—monogamous—seems like a better antonym for swinger than polyamorous. The only words I can come up with, like fixated or obsessed, all have negative connotations. Even faithful is seen as an action.

I think the problem is that polyamorous doesn’t have a clean antonym because it describes an orientation toward relationships, not simply a behavior.

Monogamous is the opposite in terms of relationship structure, but not necessarily in terms of attraction. A monogamous person can still be capable of loving or desiring multiple people; they simply choose to have one romantic partner. Likewise, a polyamorous person isn’t defined by promiscuity or multiple sexual partners, but by the capacity for multiple consensual romantic relationships.

If you’re looking for a true conceptual opposite, there really isn’t a widely accepted one. Words like exclusive, pair-bonded, or monoamorous get close, although monoamorous isn’t commonly used outside discussions of relationship theory.

And I agree with your distinction. Swinger describes a sexual practice. Polyamorous describes a relationship orientation. Those are related concepts, but they aren’t opposites of each other, which is why the vocabulary feels a little lopsided.

I made a conscious effort not to be harsh, but you stumbled into one of my pet peeves. I have a whole six-month-long story involving mechanical repairs and military inspections about why it is a pet peeve. I almost posted the whole long thing before I realized nobody cares.

But suffice it to say, four decades later, if I hop on a computer repair forum with a question and say in the OP, "I turned it off, waited two minutes, and turned it on again, and that did nothing for the problem," then the only response I have to a reply of "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" is annoyance.
