I am in the process of getting one together, Sheila. A chapbook that is not a contest. Do lots of research and only send money to places with a long history. If there wasn't a history and a reputable looking site, I wouldn't trust them. If you go on Duotrope.com they list contests.

I am have no problem finding contests. I wanted to research fiction and poetry contests on my own. That's when I decided to start my new blogs (as you see in my sig). I have a 2008 Writer's Market and have been cross-referencing those listings with scam warnings I find online.

I haven't entered any chapbook contests but I know a couple of people who have and who have won. So, if you want to know if success is possible--it is.

Biggest challenges are deciding on which poems to enter, the order, a title, following that contests particular rules regarding submissions and ensuring that a contest is reputable.

Unless a contest mentions formal poetry as a possibility, I would run under the assumption that they are expecting free verse. Sometimes they will say that they will consider forms but usually it's with the warning that it needs to be spectacular.
