The right thing to do is to start out like you said with a small butt plug and a nice WATER BASED LUBE if your not use to anal play or butt plug. I am not sure if a small will have much of a discomfort feeling, you mite also want to try a prostate massager (Sorry not sure if male or female.) Once you start getting in larger butt plugs a meduim is where I started and is where you do feel a slight discomfort but from myself it want away fast and it didnt return the next time I used it. Even walking around with the meduim was a little strange but again it went away soon and I can find myself walking around the apartment not even feeling it in.
