I left my camera at the hotel in Sydney, AFM, and am waiting for them to mail it to me. Wanted to show some of the pictures I took. I was only there for a week...but my son's on school break so I've been taking him around on errands...

I'm leading a very exciting life today. Just had some green tea and papaya and grapes. In a bit, will take my son (who is on school holidays) to the library. He reads a book a day (thriller spy mystery types) and if we have to buy books, we'd be living in Gusty's garage by now.

Is everyone job hunting now? We've just sold our business, so I'm now officially unemployed as well. I wish I could get a job just posting on lit Wonder if moderators get paid?

Saw 2 Fast 2 furious last night.....wow the cars were soooo amazing...I want!

One of my best friends is coming to London for a short visit, he's my old flatmate, basketball teammate and all around mate
He's got an english girlfriend, a real stunner at that, but he didn't meet much opposition from his parents, actually it was her grandparents who were really strongly opposed to him at the start. I was quite surprised when I heard, since chinese families tend to be really strict on the whole inter-racial relationship thing. I know that my parents wouldn't be happy if I dated/married a non chinese girl, although they would accept it rather than disown me.

Has anyone else has any experience with this? Obviously Gusty and Hong are an inter racial couple as we all know, so I'd be interested hear from them (hong where are you ), but what about everyone else, either as parents or having to deal with parents?

in response to AFM's question on interracial dating... my immediate family is okay with it. In all honesty, I've never properly dated a Chinese man, not because I have anything against it, I treat each new partner as an individual, irregardless of culture... it just happened that none of them were Chinese in the past.. that doesn't mean that he/she might not be in the future.. it's just a matter of opportunity and circumstance I suppose.

I think that all Chinese parents hope their kids marry Chinese, at least initially. After my parents got divorced, my mom actually said to me to not worry about my partner's race. Having married a Chinese man rather unsuccessfully, she would rather that I was happy and realized that my father being Chinese added very little value to their relationship, other than producing yellow skinned, black haired, brown eyed babies... it's all those other things that count the most.

The Chinese in the Philippines (mostly Fukien) value their purity and strongly discourage their children from marrying Filipinos. I have a relative who dated a Chinese woman for 11 years. He said they loved each other but she didn't have the courage to break off from her family. She never told them she was dating a Filipino...

Anyway, bugga, I agree with your mother's statement. It's not the ethic blood that must be kept pure...marriage is so much more difficult and complex than that. My parents, especially my mom, wanted us to marry Filipinos because she thought a Filipino man would have a better chance of maintaining values that would be good for a marriage and raising children. I tend to disagree...but it's too late now.

Interesting points here...

I think there can be significant culture barriers to inter-racial dating, not just with parents but with different mentalities/ideals. For example, my parents brought me up to be a fairly traditional chinese, and I have a lot of chinese friends and am quite into chinese culture. I realised recently that I'd have a lot of trouble dating a non chinese girl, mainly because my mentality can differ greatly from the average british lady(for example). Has anyone else ever experienced this?

And no more pics for you lot....I'm strictly under wraps until my sis comes back from HK

Nice to see you guys back to the message board again. Enjoy your time in Maryland Hong, this time of the year is the most comfortable at the north. And thanks for your offer of help. I just sent you a pm.

Regarding the interacial dating, my parents probably would not agree for me to marry any non-chinese girls as well. For me, dating is one thing, getting married is another thing. I have no problem to date any woman as long as we share the same interest and have a good time together. However, for marriage, I would need someone who understand the Chinese culture and language. I would want my kids to understand their heritage. Still, I would rather be with a non-chinese who know the chinese culture well than an ABC or CBC who has no idea about anything Chinese besides the food (sorry no offence for anyone. That is just my preference). However, what is most important is the person, not his or her color or race. You are marrying a person, not a race.

i'm not asian but my wife is half thai and i think of the asian families i know, most would rather sons marry other asians but with daughters they are less concerned of race.

I usually lurk at the poetry boards, but this thread caught my eye.

I am half Chinese, and I grew up in the Western US (Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon). I currently live in Nevada. Talk about standing out in a crowd.

My father is from China and mom is a european mixture. I get mistaken for Native American quite a bit here in the west.

WHile I was growing up, people were most surprised that *dad* was Asian, as most inter-racial couples had the woman asian. Do you find this to be true, still? (I have a hard time gauging, as I am not around a lot of asians).

Great thread....I look forward to joining in the discussions.
