Chain Story Discussion

Oh goodie. I hate self-control with characterization. ::cracks her fingers in anticipation::

Johnny_Boy -

I sent you a PM last night and haven't heard from you yet. A few weeks ago you told this forum that you were having computer problems. Still having them? Do you want to submit your story later on?

Are you still alive?

Earth to JB, come in, please.

;)

Well, still no response from Johnny_Boy. At this point, I'd say he's flaking out, just like GoddessKaren did.

With that in mind, I thought that it's time to check-in again with everyone's current status.

---------------------------------------------------
Judo status: My chapter is finished. It's been reviewed by three editors and I've finished all of their re-writes. Now, I will do one more re-write - a final polish front to back and then, deliver on Friday, July 19th.
---------------------------------------------------

How's everyone else doing at this point?

Delivery Dates:
Judo - Friday, July 19th, 2002
Karmadog - Friday, July 26th, 2002
Todd O'Vision - Friday, August 2nd, 2002
RisiaSkye - Friday, August 9th, 2002
Quint - Friday, August 16th, 2002
Whispersecret - Friday, August 23rd, 2002

Well, I kind of hit a wall, but I'll be finished with the writing by this weekend come hell or highwater (well, not highwater, I live in a one story) and finish the edit and any rewrites during the week. I'm at about 16,000 words, but judging from experience, at least half of those will end up recycled into toilet paper.

I'll be ready.

My block regarding my chapter seems to have vanished. I have a good solid start, but where this story is headed is sort of in the air. KM has promised to help me brainstorm an ending. She's a terrific sounding board for me. I have, maybe 500 words down.

To Todd, WS, RS, Kdog and Quint -

Laurel has asked me to tell you to do the following upon submitting your chapters. She does a lot of the editing, posting, etc. in less than optimal conditions, so as a reminder to her, she has asked each of us to put a little note along with our submission (either in the note box provided or at the top of your manuscript) that explains when your chapter is to be submitted for editorial and when it is to be posted.
---------------------------------------------------

For example:

Dearest Laurel,

My chapter "Talisman - Victoria Grace Tilden" is now submitted to you for your approval on this day July 19th, 2002. It is to be posted to the Talisman site and made public on July 26th, 2002.

Have a good read.

---------------------------------------------------

Or something to that effect.

Okay?

;)
- Judo

JUDO: No problem, and thanks for the heads-up about Laurel's request.

Let's just say I'm not finished yet.
But I will be, by August 9th. I don't miss deadlines often.

Could you please put that little reminder back on the first page of the thread, for us lazy people? Thanks, Judo. You're doing a terrific job.

I nominate Judo for the Official Lit Chain Story Generalissima. There is no pay with this position, but much gratitude from authors. ;)

To all -

My chapter is submitted for Laurel's review. It will be posted on Friday, July 26th (next week).

Thanks, everyone, for chiming in and letting us know of your progress. WS, I was very glad to hear that you will be staying on. Yeh!
-----------------
Heads up!

I will be out of town from July 20th to July 30th on business (and hopefully, some fun). When my piece is posted would one of you mind posting a link to it here in the thread? Or wherever, I'd really appreciate it.

Have fun. I will try to check the site a couple of times while I'm out, but no guarantees.
-----------------

I'm still here tomorrow, so if anyone has any final business for me, please try to get in touch before I take off.

Bye for now.

;)

I just went to check out the Talisman stories, via the Chain Stories category, and like all the other stories listed, the chapters all appear in alphabetical order. So a reader who looks here will take the chapters out of sequence.

There's no problem if they access through Judo's Introduction Page, but in the Story Index...

Problems?

WS -

Our problems seem to be compounded. I just logged in from a remote station to see my story posted and it isn't. I even have a note on it from Laurel (or someone) that it is to be posted on 7-26.

Anyone know what gives?

:(

I think the solution to the problem Whispersecret raised - about the order in the index would be for JUDO to contact Laurel and insert chapter or maybe more accurately "story" numbers, after Talisman and before the story title.

Does anyone want to take a whack at my story? It should be done in a week, give a take a couple of days.

Here's a brief summary. WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD.

The story around Lucas Drake, a thief who steals the talisman and is influenced by it. He maintains a cover for himself as a "security consultant." Over the years he's made friends with the family who lives next door. A part of him has always longed for acceptance and respect and the type of love a family can offer.

The daughter in the family has admired him from afar. When her parents leave her alone in the house for a week, she invites Lucas over for dinner with the intention of asking him to make love to her. She was date raped and wants Lucas to erase the bad memories. He resists, not wanting to jeopardize his relationship with the rest of the family, should they find out. Besides, he's always thought of himself as a sort of big brother to her.

Yet the talisman guides him into making the right decision for them both.

Of course, because I'm me, my portion has to have a happy ending, but I'm not sure how I should tie up the entire chain. Should I leave it open so that the talisman is obviously going to continue influencing people even though our stories are finished? Or should I have it fall to the bottom of the lake, perhaps never to be found?

I'm sure that over the centuries, someone has thrown the Talisman away and it has found it's way into the lives of subsequent holders.

You can try to throw it in the lake, but anyone who has read the whole eries will know that some fish will grab it befor eit hits bottom and head for some fisherman's net. ;)

Whisper,

I'd be delighted to have a look at your episode. Send it along any old time you like.

Alex

I second Alex's post.

Gimme!

I have one scene left, because it's a lovemaking scene and I haven't been in the appropriate mood to write THAT kind of sex in a couple of days. I'm delighted with what I've accomplished so far and I'll have it sent out to my editors probably by tomorrow.

Quint and Alex, thanks for the offer. I'll send it along when it's done. KM and my good friend Gaucho will be looking at it too. The more eyes the better.

As for the wrap up...perhaps Lucas's client never does show up, having been killed or incarcerated. Perhaps Lucas puts it in a safe deposit box.

Maybe the date-rapist gets a hold of it, which would tie up his loose end sort of nicely. Then the reader would be left assuming the kid learns a needed lesson himself. I was having trouble trying to decide what would happen to the kid and didn't like the idea of him getting off scot-free.

Thoughts on this?

Whisper,

I like the idea of the date-rapist getting hold of the Talisman, but even more I like the idea of the dark side of the Talisman influencing him into something nasty! Sorry. I get a bit Old Testament sometimes!

I look forward to seeing your piece in due course.

Alex

For Anyone Interested

Hey guys! I'm trying to plan another chain story, mainly for those of us in the survivor contest who didn't get included, but if anyone else wants to join in please do! This is a link to the thread:

Chain Story Ideas

Hope to hear from you soon!

Chicklet

I will have mine finished Tuesday or wednesday for submission wednesday to be posted Aug 2nd

My apologies for cutting it so short, but with a bout of real life and writers block, and writers inferiority going on.

My apologies
