"It'll be good to get away." Fiona said softly as Invah rested her head next to her. "Sam might follow me, but I think I need a break away to get my head on straight. Will can keep busy being a ranger. He'll miss me, but he'll also understand. He's got people to make sure he's alright now."

"The real question here is, do you want Sam to follow you?" Invah smiled. "You wouldn't have to deal with his little sisters' questions and the crowd of Ghis."

"He's stubborn enough that he'll follow me to the ends of the earth." Fiona said with a slight smile on her lips. "And he's a really good kisser. Maybe being chased isn't so bad after all, right?"

"Love is all chasing, with a few captures now and then. Especially when you're young. But when you get older, it slows down into a quieter, lovelier contest of who can romance the other most." Invah nudged her arm. "You should give Samuel a little hint that you might welcome the chase."

"Not you too." Fiona said as Invah nudged her and she blushed deeply. "What kind of hint should I give him?"

"Just something simple... Or you could outright ask him. Or you could see if he'll do it on his own unbidden. It'd be sweet if he did."

"I feel like everyone is invested in the both of us. His family wants to see him happy and they want to see me cared for." Fiona said softly. "I keep telling him that I don't need someone to take care of me. I can do that all on my own."

"That's part of what love is, though- caring for each other- be it making sure they're eating well, keeping them company, keeping them safe..." Invah glanced to the eastern horizon. "Sometimes we can get a little too worried, but it's worth it."

"We'll find your mate, Invah." Fiona said softly as the dragon looked towards the East. "I promise. No matter if he's passed away or not, I promise that we'll find him."

"I'm a little afraid to know," she murmured. "I feel like I'd rather wonder forever than risk finding out he's dead."

"Well, at least then you would know and could mourn." Fiona said softly as Invah talked about not wanting to know. "I felt the same way about my Da. We always just assumed that he was dead. He was gone one day and never came back. If he is dead then he is at least with my Ma. If not...well, I hope that he finally found what made him happy."

"Would you ever want to see him again? Now that you're older and independent?" Invah asked softly. "Age tends to give a person a softer touch and a kinder eye."

"I don't know." She said softly. "He did a lot of bad things to me. He wanted a fox, not a human. Maybe if I'd been a fox and a boy things might have been different. He blamed me for my Ma's death and he fought his father tooth and nail for me, even though he didn't want me. He was a stubborn fool who couldn't raise a little girl and who struggled after his mate died."

"Perhaps if he is alive, the both of you might find some closure one day. But it's no surprise to me, hearing of a person who couldn't cope after their mate died. It seemed to happen to the werefolk in my homeland every year. One would die, and their mate would become irate or a hermit. Few found mates again, and even fewer were ever fully sane or happy ever again. I don't know what it is about werefolk that makes them that way... Some humans have it too, when they're in love. It's both beautiful and terrifying that they feel so strongly. Your father was one who couldn't cope hardly at all."

"He always blamed himself for letting her drinking get out of control." Fiona confessed. "The both of them would have screaming fights at night. Our cabin was so small that I would curl up under my bed until it was over. He was terrified of losing her and when it happened, he felt that he had failed. I guess taking that anger out on me was easier than facing it himself."

"Perhaps he just needed someone to forgive him," Invah suggested softly. "I don't mean to excuse anything he did or say he had a good reason. But he didn't have anyone to lean on, and that makes the greatest monsters- being alone. You were a little girl, though. You couldn't have understood that then."

"I tried my hardest to love him. He would just push me further away. My grandpa tried too. It just made Da angry." Fiona said as she glanced towards Invah. "Then he was gone. A small part of me wishes that I knew if he were alive or dead. My brain tells me that it's best that he's gone."

"Perhaps one day you'll get a chance to talk to him again," Invah murmured, lifting a huge hand to hug Fiona against her cheek. "I think I'm going to leave in a few days, once these wounds aren't in danger of acting up anymore."

Fiona hugged Invah tightly as she hugged her against her cheek. Invah was like the mother that she couldn't remember. She was kind and cared about Fiona, giving her advice and listening to her troubles without an unkind word.

"I can be ready." She said as Invah said that she would leave in a few days. "I'll make sure that Will has enough supplies to get him through the time I'll be gone. In the mean time, I have some pie that I brought for you. Will says it's the best apple pie in Inverness."

Despite her huge hands and claws, Invah picked up the pie between three claws without disturbing it at all. "That's very sweet of you, little one," she said with a smile. It was a simple matter of tipping the large pastry- which to her was no bigger than a penny to a human- into her maw. She smiled at the lovely flavor, enjoying it for a long moment before finally swallowing it whole. She laid the dish back down in the grass and hugged Fiona close once more, her tail curling a little closer around them.

Fiona hugged Invah tightly, relaxing as she was cradled close to her scaled cheek. "I feel like you're my Ma sometimes. Is that strange?"

"I don't think so. We may not have known each other long, but we've been through a lot, trying to protect each other. And it's nice to have someone to look after again."

"It's nice to be taken care of." Fiona admitted as Invah told her that what she was feeling wasn't strange at all. "And we'll find your family. I'm sure they'll be happy to see you again."

"I can only hope so. All dragons hibernate a few times in their lives, but I still felt terrible leaving them. Even if my mate had been well, I still would've been worried sick."

"They'll forgive you. Family always understands." Fiona said softly. "And I'm learning that good friends understand as well. If you're worth fighting for they will never let you go."
