Anyone wanna tell him about the champagne business?

Also, I thought tariffs were a great thing.

🙈😂
Tariffs are wooooondrrful... If they are decided by the American president.. Tariffs from others, well.. they are obviously nasty and just made to exploit and repress America.

😆

This is kinda funny in a surreal way.

That’s the way bullies roll.

But.. do they always win?

This tariff war, I seriously doubt that the president has thought this through.

We might not (yet) be the strongest military force over here in EU.
And, we might not buy your farmer products (and why should we? If we can produce better and cheaper products, that is the idea of import/export after all, buy what you cannot make/produce yourself)

So, he might think that he got a point here.
And that it is going to hurt us, more than it is going to hurt USA, that he plays the bully with tariffs.

By all means, he should go all out. I am sure his rich tech friends are supporting him...

It is not like.. Netflix, Microsoft, Apple, HBO, Amazon... Are American, and can be buried under tariffs and other things.. 😉

Well, I mean, he's also blaming Ukraine for Russia's invasion of Ukraine....so....

Bullies only tend to win short term, there’s always a bigger one comes along, ie putin.
And yes European security is best achieved by collective European action.

You are right, it is how things goes.. friends and foes can change, such is life.

Europe is stepping up and finally becoming independent. - and closer! If anything, this has proven just how important it is for us to act as a unit, and not 27 different countries.

Agree, just wish the uk was still a member.

The Wall Street Journal is owned by Murdoch, not “the polluted thinking of the European Union”. 😄

It’s also amusing that Doddering Donnie calls the WSJ’s thinking “antiquated and weak” when his mercantilism policies are from the 1890s (they failed miserably).

The f*ck you say? The felon just said we're doing great! So hell, who are we to believe? A narcissistic felon or some rouge poster on Lit speaking the truth?

And please, pick your pants back up. It ain't pretty. :giggle:

Trump’s tariff gamble is a costly isolationist mistake.

Donald Trump’s return to tariff warfare is a predictable yet disastrous move that is harming American consumers, alienating allies, and undermining the U.S. economy. By imposing tariffs on steel, aluminum, alcohol, produce, oil, and other goods, Trump is reviving the same flawed protectionist policies that have historically led to economic instability and global distrust. His assumption that price increases will be temporary lacks grounding in economic reality. As the European Union and Canada impose retaliatory measures, the United States finds itself once again on a path toward economic isolationism. It is not just the imposition of selective tariffs, flawed as they are, but importantly, the manner of his belligerence in announcing them in the most threatening way a President could.

The President has failed to convey any sense of security to the American public in this effort. Wall Street has already indicated to America what we can expect in the coming months: lost revenue and growing anxiety over Trump’s inconsistent and trivial tariff threats. Such unprecedented and unpresidential actions are causing alarm across the nation and certainly around the world, as leaders of other countries are left wondering if America will uphold past commitments for support against escalating saber-rattling nations, such as Russia and China.

The felon made false promises… yeah, including tariffs!

Trump promotes tariffs as a way to protect American industries, but history shows that they often result in more harm than good. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930 deepened the Great Depression, and Trump’s tariffs during his first term led to significant economic consequences. The steel tariffs he introduced in 2018 increased costs for American manufacturers reliant on steel, resulting in job losses in sectors far exceeding the number of steelworkers. Meanwhile, farmers—caught in the crossfire of his trade war with China—required billions in government bailouts to stay afloat. This time, the felon claims this is just a temporary disruption in the economic adjustments needed to reduce spending. He was mistaken in 2018, and applying the same measures as he did then is not a rational corrective approach. You know what they say about someone who keeps doing the same thing and expects a different outcome…

Now, he’s doubling down. Tariffs on produce and alcohol will push grocery bills even higher for Americans who are already struggling with inflation. He falsely promised to promptly rein in food prices, leaving those voters stranded in the grocery aisles as they try to manage increasingly smaller amounts of money for those taxed items. The rising costs of oil and raw materials will ripple through the economy, making everything from cars to housing more expensive. Everyone knows that! Trump’s claim that price hikes will be "temporary fluctuations" overlooks the fact that companies rarely lower prices once costs rise. Has anyone seen car prices drop because of tariffs? Has anyone seen those overseas producers building new factories as a result of tariffs and coming to America? Remember Trump’s computer chip factory promise? The one that Biden fulfilled when Trump ‘forgot’ about it?

I believe you’re referring to the Foxconn fiasco that involved flat screen production.

And, yes, President Biden made lemonade out of that lemon. (Orange juice out of that rotten orange???)

Also:

“Foxconn” was too on the nose.

Whenever you have the words “Fox” and “con” joined together, you KNOW it’s going to end badly.

🤬

We. Told. Them. So.

Yep.

"In 2018, then-President Trump bragged that this facility in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, would be a shining example of MAGA, proof that he could bring back Midwestern manufacturing jobs. Foxconn, the Taiwanese conglomerate, was lured to cheese country by the promise of $3 billion in tax credits if it supplied 13,000 jobs. Local governments and the state spent a further $500 million to secure the land, pay off homeowners and bulldoze their properties, and lay down roads and power to the plant."

Promises made but promises not kept soured the deal. Trump started something he couldn't/wouldn't finish. Another shining example of his brilliant business deals.

While I'm on my soap box...

Trade is a two-way street, and Trump’s tariffs aren’t happening in isolation. The EU and Canada are already retaliating with their tariffs, targeting American industries such as agriculture and manufacturing. When American exporters encounter higher costs abroad, businesses struggle, jobs are lost, and the economy contracts. This tit-for-tat approach doesn’t make America stronger—it makes it weaker. It is not Make America Great Again is it?

Beyond the economic consequences, Trump’s policies convey a dangerous message to the world: the U.S. is an unreliable trade partner. By forsaking cooperative trade relationships and prioritizing short-sighted economic nationalism, he drives allies to establish new economic partnerships—often with China and the European Union. The long-term result? A reduced role for the United States in the global economy and a decline in American influence. Way to go MR. PrEsIdEnT.

Yet, the MAGA masses cheer his efforts, claiming they own the libs—whoever those people are. They are certainly not the 'cut-your-nose-off-to-spite-your-face' types in this ongoing battle of wits. [Trump isn't holding the cards here, is he?]

Trump will have said a lot but done little when all is said and done. Actually, what he will do via his inactions is put a nail in America's coffin and open it up to hostile actions across the globe.

And we will most likely stand alone at times we need allies. American made products are being scorned and refused in former friends marketplaces. If he was complaining about the trade imbalance figures, he is going to flip out when American exports ain't leavin' our ports cuz they got nowhere to go. Another step back, onshoring of jobs not going to happen if you don't have a market to sell to. This isn't going to end well. Sorry, I'll get off your soap box now.

You are welcome to stand on it anytime. Just be careful; there's a wobble in the back corner from all the times people have stepped on it in the past.

Regarding the freak out situations, the Kentucky governor stated today that it isn't just the bourbon being affected by Canadians emptying the shelves. It impacts the farmers growing the corn, the truckers hauling it, the barrel makers, and a host of others in between who are or will be affected by the sole responsibility of one man pursuing his own pipe dreams.
