So, when I sought further clarification as to whether Trump bringing back Columbus Day had anything to do with the fact that his Uncle had taught Columbus at university you said -

The reason I found that...surprising... is that Columbus first arrived on the continent of America in 1492, which is 415 years before President Trump's uncle John was born.

You see my original post was what we call a 'joke' in the UK, Trump having previously claimed that his uncle had taught Theodore Kaczynski at university (which was also impossible, but not by quite as much as teaching Columbus).

I assure you my hope when posting was purely that it would make a few people laugh. I never set out with the intention of making anyone look silly, and certainly not to make them look like a freaking imbecile.

So in the spirit of reconciliation what about if we both go with a 'talking at cross purposes' explanation?

Nonsense. Up until the late 1800's it was considered rude to even ask a doctor to wash his hands between patients. The notion that people in the 1500's had even a clue about the source of diseases is ahistorical in the extreme. They typically blamed foul smelling air and evil spirits for their diseases.



Lepers were made to leave populated areas because leprosy was seen as a curse from God in punishment for sin. Again, this had fuck all to do with any understanding of disease prevention and everything to do with superstition and ignorance.

It's difficult to engage with that level of self-important ignorance. Columbus invaded the Bahamas a century after the Black Death wiped out half of the population of Europe. The people knew perfectly well that travellers brought the disease to their communities, there are several documented examples of villages barring the gates to either prevent infection or to prevent it from spreading to their neighbors.

Whether it was caused by God or rats was irrelevant, it was passed by contact.
