Comments That Make Your Day

5 stars just for the final three paragraphs.
The lead-up to that was fine. but the ending .... that came from nowhere and created a fascinating set of questions.
I absolutely loved building towards that ending. Honestly, that was the thing that made the whole story. I imagined that, first. :)

Over on Recorded for Posterity.

My thread about Fairytale of New York has drawn quite a few new readers to it, and a handful of new votes. And this comment from @AG31, on top of their feedback in the thread:
At a personal level, this is not to my taste. But it's clearly very well done. It's tender and the descriptions are evocative. Good five starr job!
Thanks for your objective appreciation!

In my latest story "The Maneater" (posted to Loving Wives), one anonymous reader picked up on the following on the MFC, Jan to make this comment:

mmm ...,
Pro: Well written
Con: Jan's a bitch.
Jan's a slut.
Jan's a manipulater.
Jan's a self centered narcissist.

I wonder if anonymous picked up the clue at the end of the story when Jan says: "You may think I'm a scheming, selfish bitch, ... and you're damn right I am! "

But perhaps my favorite comment so far is one I didn't even get a chance to read. In my Author's Dashboard, it says there were five comments posted, but there are only four there for us to read. The Admins deleted that gem.

Some anonymous commenter must have said something REALLY bad to catch the Admin's attention so quickly.

A reader who finished my Stormwatch and Andi's Dream series and started We're a Wonderful Wife:
You've done it again. I now have two more loving families to add to my collection. I can hardly stand all this love! Tears a'falling and big smiles. I'm really looking forward to a long, long read.

I've had comments show up on the dashboard before they were posted on the story.

I know. I've seen that with other stories. Sometimes a comment would post and take four hours before it's available to read.

But in this case there are (at this time) five comments listed in my dashboard, ALL showing as posted 19 hours ago. And yet there are only four available to read. That suggests one has been deleted, and I don't delete any comments, even outrageously shiity ones, such as when someone posted "EAT SHIT AND DIE!" on one of my stories. That one took the Admins two days before they deleted it.

In 5 years, I've only seen the admin delete one comment. He/she left one on my story. I had no problem with it. Didn't like the story but explained why and that I consider reasonable feedback. But it disappeared. I can only assume they misbehaved elsewhere and got a global bounce. I went to their profile, but it was completely blank.

A new comment came in from Anon yesterday on "My Sister's Love", one of my favorite stories about when Clara's big sister brings home a man.

One of the best stories I've read here. Thank you for sharing your wonderful creations!

That led me to review the other comments and I found one of my favorites by member MusicGuy4Fun (and his wife):
A wonderful story

My wife is blind and I read it to her. It was engaging and very romantic.

Wife’s comments “very [every] character was vivid and real.

I just had another (sixth) comment in my dashboard as posted 28 minutes ago, and only five now showing.

So, the Admins definitely deleted one of those posted yesterday before I had a chance to read it. (Like it might have hurt my feelings ... LOL!)

Another nice comment on the finale of my fantasy series, Drowning at Dusk

You are such a master at your craft, Karina-Jayde! Your creativity and imagination revolving around the Moondance, while such a tiny piece of the overall story, draws the reader in and helps create total immersion in the story. And yet the Moondance is just one example of the talent you apply to these stories. In my list of favorite authors here, you rank up in the top few. Thank you!

Some of the praise may not make much sense without the context of the story, but I'm really glad that a reader/commenter noted the importance of the 'Moondance' element, which was pretty important from a thematic, erotic, and character-building perspective. Had a lot of fun working that into the story and using it to develop the relationship between the MCs.

When I posted the 6th chapter of a story....

by Anonymous user on 01/03/2024

Had to back up to catch up...this is quite the tale! Keep it going!!

Then a bit later...to keep my ego in check :)

Hope we don't wait another 3 years for the next part

Its funny cause it's true... first 3 chapters in a month....then 3 years for chapter 4, another 3 for 5 and another 3 for 6...good news is 7 is submitted and 8 (which will be the final) is started.

I got this one a couple of days ago on the last part of my novel from 2020. It got me to start writing again. :)

You pulled on every string in my heart, and now I sit here in tears and can't seem to stop grinding my hips... In my own way, I'm Alex without the fairy tale, so this story was an unexpected punch that left me reeling in bliss. When I began writing my own stories, a fellow writer once told me that even the craziest fiction holds some truth. That has helped me greatly throughout the years, and has also opened my eyes to seeing truths within the stories of others. I don't know what you pulled from your experiences to breathe life into this, but you have my gratitude for putting it all down so eloquently, especially the dialects of each character! Thank you so much for the best emotional roller coaster ride I've had in quite some time!

Always nice to get an appreciative reader, but even more to get a nice comment on a year-old story.

A beautiful journey evolved for two deserving people, that turned a horror show into a life-changing event that was deserved by these folks.

A reader's comment on 'Inspiration from the Piney Woods,' an interracial love story entry.

"I Don't usually read the interracial stories, a lot of the stories are too ignorant, skin colour is only like hair, comes in different colours. Everybody is the same with only cultural backgrounds being different. When as white British I started dating my black British girlfriend I was aware that people would notice us just because we were different. After a few weeks I realised I didn't care. I didn't have a black girlfriend, I just had a girlfriend. 34 years later I love her just as much. This was a great story, loved where it went, and pleased where it ended.

IF this were a true story then true respect to couples who were together in those difficult times. Crazy that mixed marriage was illegal till 1967, but even more crazy that in 2000 when state laws were being reformed, to remove the 1901 ban on mixed marriage, 40% of the state voted for NO. Still too much ignorance. Well had my rant. Good story. 5 star 🌟"

I was reading old comments, because I do that sometimes.
I found two Anonymous comments on stories published almost a year apart, that were also posted a year apart. It is easy to see they are the same person.

There is the same complimentary language.

But in one, they just have to complain that I wrote 'discrete' when I meant 'discreet'.
In the other, they complain that I wrote 'discreet' when I meant 'discrete'.

Has anyone been honored by a visit and comment from Comentarista82? I have, today. It was a true smile-lifting experience. He said it was the first time that he had read one of my stories - I hope I can live up to his expectations as he goes to read anything else I wrote. He left a 1,440-word review on my story Inspiration from the Piney Woods. [My story is 14,000 words] It is an interracial period piece between a White boy and a Black girl set in the 1940s.

The category may not be your cup of tea, but I think reading his comment is highly educational for period writing story development. Just go to the comments and read his, even if the story is not your usual taste in Lit. It contains insightful writing tips.

This is an extract from his first paragraph:

"I believe this is the first of your stories that I have read, and it was a very good introduction. I certainly believe you crafted a very fine, high-quality story that certainly is one worthy of Interracial Romance. In fact it's going to be one of the few good outputs in that category, ... I usually just find some meaningless drivel ... so to read something like this that explores at least a little bit of the opposite side is quite refreshing to read. I'm also a little bit taken aback as to why a quality story of this kind only had four comments as of this date, as that just strikes me as tremendously short-sighted ..."

I've received comments from him a number of times. He is obviously a very thoughtful reader and is often very insightful. He can also be wildly off the mark, but will concede graciously if shown to be wrong. His comments are always interesting to say the least.
