CONGRESSIONAL REDISTRICTING MEGA-THREAD

That’s not stopping the Republicans. That's helping them. Now gerrymandering is legitimized by both parties.
It's not helping them half as much as what Democrats have usually done in the past: continue to play politely by the rules. Heck, that never even stopped people like you from saying both sides do it.

And now we have both sides gerrymandering.

Liberals enable fascism by continuing fascist policy.

Our friend Rob may need immediate, effective support to address his pain and sorrow about what this may mean for the Midterms. He may need help with meals and errands. Is there anyone in Houston who can help?
Can’t you just send your meals on wheels volunteers to help?

We know you can’t get mom’s meatloaf anymore but you have stockpiled up I’m sure in the freezer.

And in Florida, spread too thin will backfire on wannabe cabinet member Ron. All of those other special elections went so well, especially in Orange’s back yard before redistricting (before thinning it out more than whatever that is on O47’s head).

Considering that DeSantis is a lame duck as Florida Governor, he's going to keep upping the ante even further.

I should note this will likely impact the following:
*30% of the Congressional Black Caucus likely to get WIPED OUT in the South.
*Legislative districts in the State Legislatures.
*County Commissioners seats.
*City Council seats.
*School Board seats.

We'll see if Louisiana, Alabama and other states with such a sterling record on civil rights don't go back to drawing districts that make a point of preventing Black candidates from getting elected. That, of course, was the point of this portion of the Voting Rights Act in the first place.
They are not "drawing districts that make a point of preventing Black candidates from getting elected." That is a lie your cult tells that is based on racist assumptions. What they're doing is complying with the court's ruling that you can't create specifically racial districts. You can't design a district either to prevent a minority from getting elected or specifically to get them elected. Your lines are to be race-neutral to the fullest extent possible.

While we're in Houston, you might want to look into finding help saving Cornyn's Senate seat, which is in real danger of flipping to the Dems.
I never liked the feckless RINO in the first place.

What the court has effectively held is that the Constitution cannot be recruited as a diversity consultant, that it does not permit the practice of discriminating against one group in the name of curing discrimination against another. In other words, it declines to endorse the curious arithmetic by which bias, when properly relabeled, is expected to add up to equality.

That's exactly what they did before the VRA was passed. Which is why it was passed in the first place.

What they're doing in Louisiana, and threatening to do in Alabama, is effectively designing a district to prevent a minority from getting elected. Open your eyes already.

Yes, because using anti-white racism to create new districts is now illegal.

Justice Dept says it will enforce SCOTUS ruling in every state with racially gerrymandered districts

The commitment comes as 45 redistricting disputes remain unresolved in federal and state courts, casting a cloud of legal uncertainty over the fight for control of the U.S. House of Representatives this November.
United States Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said Thursday that the Justice Department will enforce the Supreme Court's decision on gerrymandering districts in every state that has such a district.

The Supreme Court struck down two congressional maps in Louisiana Wednesday, ruling the state was unconstitutionally racially gerrymandering when it added a second majority black district. Louisiana redrew the maps in 2024 after a lower court ruled previous maps likely violated the Voting Rights Act because it did not include the second majority black district.

Missouri GOP Sen. Eric Schmitt asked the Justice Department earlier Thursday to enforce the Supreme Court ruling nationwide, noting it had the power to do so.

So now allowing a district centered on a compact geographic area where the majority of voters are Black is "anti-white racism"?
Eh, to be fair, your kind have always believed equal rights amount to anti-white something or other anyway.

In Tennessee there is just one Congressional seat held by a Democrat. It’s a geographically compact district centered on Memphis, which is 65% black.

Republicans plan to carve up that district into long, narrow districts and thereby dilute the black voters enough to make them irrelevant.

Are you seriously pretending they are “not drawing districts that make a point of preventing black candidates from getting elected”?

Seriously?

Just stop being a coward and admit what is actually happening.

When districts are engineered by zeroing in on voters primarily because they are Black, that’s racial sorting by another name. As Samuel Alito has noted, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 does not require the creation of majority-Black districts; it requires that voting practices not dilute minority voting power. Those are not the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable is where your argument goes off the rails.

You know perfectly well what's underfoot in Louisiana and Alabama is all about diluting minority voting power.
It's great that we're seeing more Black members from predominantly white districts. But in no way does that negate the reality of what they're after in Louisiana.

Michigan's legislature map was redrawn in response to a lawsuit demanding more black majority districts. The new map then had fewer Dem districts. The commission that thought it was done for the decade needed a budget again to hire a lawyer to go to court and then go back to work. At least one member had left the state. The next commission may need all new members to redo a redone job.

Dems in other states fighting for their district preferences may also need to decide which is more important: black districts or Dem districts.
