COVID impacts

Alas it's hard to even see my house from the street, and I don't really want people coming close enough to see what's in the window.

Read an inspirational bit of news today in The Associated Press about Valeria Luiselli, author of "Lost Children Archive", which last week was honored with the British Rathbone Folio Prize. The book has also won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and a Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Literature. It is a finalist for The National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. (This book is an exploration of the impact on the thousands of children caught up in a "migratory limbo" in our recent past.)

She says of our current situation in regard to the pandemic;I think it is my duty, and the duty of every writer, whether it is a science-fiction writer, a journalist, a poet, each at their own pace and within their own capacities, to document this moment.

So, there's the call to turn our imaginations loose to help document these days for posterity.

But a curfew? Eww. How are they enforcing that? Most of our local police force seems to be too engaged in stopping out-of-state drivers for quarantine information. Anyone driving around with an out-of-state plate who is here for any reason other than work has to stay in self quarantine for two weeks.
It depends whether or not you want to run the risk of getting/spreading infection, I guess.

Here in Australia, the police are starting to hand out on the spot fines of a thousand dollars or so if people are seen breaking social isolation rules. The police, backed by the military, are enforcing those in mandatory quarantine. Here in Australia, too, we're starting to flatten the curve, so social isolation is beginning to work. Touch wood, cross fingers, stay indoors.

Look at America's curve, decide if you want to risk yourself/others dying, and then go on about civil liberties. Looking in from the outside, your tsunami is still coming. At least your local police are addressing the primary cause of spread, people wandering around where they don't need to be. So that's a plus. Stay indoors, resist the temptation of Spring. Keep breathing fresh air :).

Right, I saw the candle thing too. Some cities are also asking at certain times for people to open their windows, or go out on terraces and scream, clap, cheer, give applause etc. for healthcare providers and first responders.

Well, there are a lot of exceptions to the curfew. My city jumped early on the isolation bandwagon so we are not hard hit yet. This is just gratefully more over-caution. I appreciate it as both slave_ and I have the kind of health issues that make contracting COVID-19 extremely dangerous.

We ventured out once to get some needed supplies last week, and we saw a lot of people not taking the proper precautions.

Just our own observations; 1. Amazon home delivery is breaking down; price gouging by their independent vendors and inadequate delivery options/equipment. It all worked pretty good until the last several days. 2. The local stores around here who offer curbside pick-up are getting swamped. The system works, but getting in the cue online is a challenge.

Need help off of your soapbox? I don’t remember saying shit about civil liberties, and asked what I thought was a relevant question because so far from what I have seen, personally, our local police resources are being redirected to the outskirts of town to the border of our state instead of staying in town to deal with in town issues. Yes we are close to state lines and it’s great to help out the troopers, but the lag in response time makes a difference.

The main road just outside my house has become a drag racing strip at night, and a couple of nights ago we had a rather nasty accident which saw a fire truck arrive 2 to 3 minutes after the accident, an ambulance arrive within 5 minutes after the accident, and no police presence for well over 15 minutes. So that’s more what prompted the question; how are resources being spent to maintain a curfew? And I guess a little bit of why can’t people just figure it out for themselves and stop being assholes.

Trust me I understand social isolation, and personally I am all for it. I’m usually practicing it every day, regardless.

*points to self* same. I am not complaining.

And again, one more time Mr. Jackson:

I saw the "eww" and misinterpreted that, and for that I apologise. I'm not on a soap-box, merely observing that if folk do stay inside, they're doing their bit towards controlling this thing. That is all I meant - given that some folk are yapping on about legality and privacy. I'm not picking any fights.

Getting back to the original topic - COVID Impacts, I an definitely see that the cranky factor around here is off the charts. All this social isolation seems to be bringing out the worst in people. This is not just in this thread or even this message board. I am seeing it everywhere.

In the interests of civility, can we all please remember that behind the clever usernames there are real people? That's why I sign every post. To remind everyone that there is a real person on the other end of those comments.

We may not all agree on every topic, but can we all at least try to get along and keep discourse civil?

James

I second the motion.

I know I'm feeling the effects of being cooped up. Naps in the afternoon  Wake up at odd hours.

But I value the relationships I've made here. Sure, they're ethereal — delicate, fragile, airy, fine, subtle; unearthly. But meaningful. I don't want to fracture any of them. (So if I act like a butt-hole, I want to know — but word choice is something we all need to keep in mind I think.)

That brings back memories of the old asshat era. :D

As I recall, those were a reward you didn't really want to win. If it gets bad around here, I suppose there could be a Reward Of The Day thread?

But then I'd feel bad laying in bed trying to go to sleep — knowing my vote made someone feel bad today

I was always curious about the term 'asshat'. My assumption has been it's based on those little too thin toilet seat covers in public restrooms. They have a nice brim, and a place to put your head in — no top of course. I'd hate to be an asshat. I rather wear one than actually be one though.

There is certainly a heightened level of crankiness it seems very recently, but I still like this place a whole lot better than back in the day. We lost numerous real good people who couldn't take the uncontrolled jerks.

Who's an old asshat????????? ;)

Hey now! I never mentioned your brown eyes again but Slave has several times. ;)

Yeah, this place is a lot better today than it was a while back. Saying the wrong thing or even using the wrong words is always around but then with the shut in, people are taking things too personally. The old asshat thing was a way to warn some people when they were headed toward the asshole threshold.

This too shall pass.

When I first joined, I rarely visited the Forum side. I mostly put up some stories, but was busy with life for a number of years. Last few years I've been here a lot more. Lit was, and still is, a wonderful resource for both, learning how to write stories — and for finding like-minded fellow humans who share similar kinks/sexual identity, etc. Once in a great while, I'll duck behind the curtain titled General Board just to examine the angst and vitriol — I'll never understand what goes on there. But, if it entertains some folks I'm glad it's there for them.

I doubt we'll need an ass-hat award here on the AH — but, a looming threat is such an effective tool sometimes ;)

One thing that is nice, when called out posters often are apologetic which is definitely not true of the past.

slave_ blows you a kiss.

Hey YN! You got me curious so I took the bdsmtest: 90% Dominant; 87% Owner; 86% Master; 83% Voyeur; 80% Non-monogamist; 73% Exhibitionist;71% Rigger; 67% Daddy; 62% Primal; 59% Brat Tamer; 58% Experimentalist; and a lot more below 50%. Fun.

How did it ring for you? I thought it described me pretty dang close.

Not bad. I've been fortunate enough to have spent the last ten years in a very power dynamic couple with a partner who shares a lot of similar kinks as me while far, far in the slave/submissive spectrum which suits me great so it is every ingrained in my system.

I can't remember them but there are at least two other tests that cover more ground but this was pretty good.

Again, it was fun. Thanks for having that in your sig.

Once again, I can't get insulin. I have insurance but can't afford the $600 a month. That's my cheapest option. I tried everything. Was getting samples from my Dr. but the people who deliver the samples are not allowed to deliver. And we're all on lock down for another month. If this virus doesn't kill mke, the diabetes will. :(

Check with doctors in your area - sometimes they get free samples from the pharmaceutical reps.

Here, I'd check with the state Department of Health. If you're in a bind, then it's likely that a lot of other people are, too.

That's just ludicrous. Another example of an out of control medical system. Without a prescription it runs about $160 in Canada. That translates to around $112 American. In the province I'm in, seniors get their drugs free.

I'd get on my soapbox here, but it will only end once enough of you say enough.
