At the end of the day, it is a he/she who feels it knows it situation. Free speech, yes, free to fuck with people's genuine emotions, no. How about walking a mile in the people who have been messed with shoes?

I voted the second as closest to my view.
I'd be happier if it read, "They're probably pretty sad people, and so they shouldn't be publicly outed".

But I'm a reasonably confident content guy so I may not know how much this stuff can hurt people.

Are you asking for the ability or for retaliation free permission?
The first is entirely on whoever. If you have the firearm, proximity and the proper mental/emotional state is not up to anyone except the potential perpetrator.
The second is a matter of law, and I'm not sure you'd be able to justify such an act.

I'm not giving permission for anyone to commit any crime. That ain't my job.
soooo yer sayin' we can't use paintballs or water cannons? You thinkin' maybe nerf guns will do the trick? ;)

Nope, I'm saying that the ability is something intrinsic to the person wanting to do the shooting, and the permission is not mine to give or with hold, legally speaking.

Basically, If yer gonna go do something illegal, immoral or unethical, that's all on you.

Yes. Absolutely.

It's part of the game. If you play the game that way, you need to be prepared to take the consequences like a man (or whatever  ).

That said - I totally agree with janey that it's not worth all the self-rightous indignation and drama that's been posted in recent days. Alts are just part of the scenery and come with the territory.

As far as people being hurt, it just doesn't make sense to me to allow oneself to get that emotionally invested in someone on the internet who may end up being a fake, a flake or who might become a mirage that disappears when you get close.

I agree at this point the horse is dead and well beaten.

Some people come here to fill a void that is missing in real life. There are some truly pathetic people out there who will prey on those people. Bottom line is be careful about what you reveal and to who.

I already said no in the other thread. I don't care if it is as clear cut as this one. Next time it could be some asshole wanting to take their beef public. It could be made up shit, and unless you know the persons involved you can never be really sure.

The other question is, who has the right to "out" people? The victims, friends of the victim or anyone? What if the victim doesn't want it to be made public? Not everyone wants that. Besides, I don't want to read about how people I don't know are assholes. Sometimes it's better to be ignorant, it makes it easier to get along.

Now I will just think he's a tool every time I see his name. I'd rather I didn't, then I could live in my happy little bubble thinking good of everyone. If this forum got filled of people publicly shaming each other, this would turn into a horrible forum and it would drive people who got nothing to do with away too. Besides, who to trust? The one posting the crap, could be making everything up, or just posting parts of the story that supports their case. The counterpart, may prefer being private and leave, rather than trying to settle it on the board. There are some people who are assholes, who will do anything to get back at people, for bullshit reasons. I don't want to give them a reason to fill the board with hate. Hate is so destructive, whether it's justified or not and I want less hate on the board not more.

Also, if someone betrayed me in the same way, I wouldn't want it to become public. I would warn my friends and then I would want to move the fuck on. Think about it, not everyone involved may want to get to go public, and not all cases are clear cut. If it's just an argument over private things, then it should be settled in private and not on the board. In the end, he acted like a scumbag, but I doubt he's the only one. I just don't see how publically shaming him has solved anything. He's still a scumbag, and the persons he hurt are still hurt.

The evidence will always be hearsay unless you're directly involved. It will always be a matter of who you trust in these cases. If a person I know says something about someone else, it will be much easier to judge if he/she is being trustworthy or not. If a stranger, I can't make the same assessment, and will probably lean on the side of trusting. That's also a reason to just tell people you know about it, they will know whether to trust you or not. It's also a good idea to warn people who may also be tricked, since it's in their interest to find out.

Letting the rest of us know, then it's just about revenge. Sometimes it may be justified, but unless you're directly involved it will be difficult to say for sure who is right and who is wrong.

I'm talking in general terms here. The case that stirred this debate, seems as clear cut as they can get. I don't agree with the outing, but it's their decisions and I respect that. I just respectfully disagree with it, because of the precedent it may set for future outings.

Besides, if the playground got filled with people outing each other, this would quickly turn into a really shitty place to hang out. I don’t want to see people call each other shitheads, unless it’s meant as a term of endearment. The same goes for fuckers.

That’s just my point of view, you fuckers. Deal with it, shitheads. :p Also, fuck you all!

eta: I voted the second option, by the way.

I don't really have an opinion. I have had primarily good experiences with those I've chatted (or a bit more) with. I guess I tend to be on the trusting side but I try not to take any of this too seriously.

I agree with Absinthe regarding the parts where he agrees with Janey.. Maus brings up a good point about who participates in the public lynching.
When the "out" turns into a witch hunt, it seems as if dozens of people knew all along how horrific this person was. Yeah? Well then why didn't you warn this great friend who you feel the need to defend BEFORE he/she was hurt?
My other "thing" - and I've discussed it with a friend here - is that when this happens, it makes it hard for the person who was hurt to find any positive at all in the time spent with the liar. The reality is, if you spent a year of your life happier because of the time someone else spent with you.. and in that entire year, you never questioned the sincerity of your conversations.. maybe you're the only one who knows for sure how badly you were hurt. You don't need two dozen other people telling you how terribly you were treated. You need people telling you that it will be ok.. that life will be fun again.. that living well is the best way to get ahead.

GG and others, I had no idea it could get as seriously involved as this! Perhaps the tiny handful of people who have pretended to be something other than themselves with me were really bad at it so I saw it really early on. But the damage the experts might do ... a whole new concept for me.

Well said!

Clearly I've missed something by being absent from the boards. Somebody have pity on me and pm me with the latest drama, k? :D

As for the poll, girls talk. I probably wouldn't "out" the person, but we all would know the dirt, and we share it. It's happened before, it'll happen again. Welcome to the playground.

i think we all know how i feel about this. it almost ruined my life. people who do this are sick and deserve to be exposed.

Please don't be a guy. :D

Anyhoo, I picked the second answer. I am of the "slippery slope/potential for fucking over someone you don't like." school
