Deconstructing Songs

I was sitting at a table in a dinner on the corner: what happens next is any ones guess

Just Fascination by Cabaret Voltaire

slipping into new disguise, your eyes low your body lies
this fascination this fascination
your thoughts, closed doors, but its no concern concern of yours
just fascination just fascination
just private fascination
hide away in secrecy, you chop away this fantasy
this private fascination this private fascination
but if they knew you'd shoot yourself, the beast, you'd shoot yourself
this private fascination
just fascination this fascination
this private fascination
a glance slips back, slipping away, slip and back another way
slipping into your disguise, your eyes low your body lies
this fascination this fascination
just fascination just private fascination
this private fascination
hide away in secrecy, you chop away this fantasy
your thoughts and closed doors
but its no concern concern of yours
just fascination just fascination just private fascination
this private fascination
a glack back, slipping away, slip and back another way
but if they knew you'd shoot yourself, the beast, you'd shoot yourself
this private fascination
just fascination
this fascination
this private fascination
just fascination ...

Milkman by Aphex Twin

I wish the milkman would deliver my milk in the morning
I wish the milkman would deliver my milk when I'm yawning
I would like some milk from the milkman's wife's tits

you know very well...who you are...don't let 'em hold you down...become a star...

talking to yourself is ok but when you get a reply it is a problem

Now THERE's a story idea for ya. Total obsession with his best friend's girlfriend. The guy means a lot to him, but it is totally eating him alive, because he HAS to have this girl.

FINALLY Stranger gets the point I was trying to make with this thread! I knew once you'd gone through Billboard's Top 1,000 of the last two decades you'd stumble onto something!

;)

But I'll admit I had fun watching you and Fanzee playing in this thread. Might have to join in one of these years.

Who is this unregistered person telling me not to talk to myself? I can talk to myself!!!!

Anyway, Tate darling, I got the point all along, I was just trying to think of something brilliant. Jesse's girl is a great story though, don't you think?

Don’t do a Tiggs on us, if you read it I think it was an old joke by the marks brothers. but not sure the quote is correct

Boy, life can sure bite sometimes!

Q: Add a shitty day at work, the spontaneous combustion of a budding relationship, and a 26 ouncer of Crown Royal with a two litre bottle of ginger ale as spritz and what do you get?

A: One totally pissed black man and a wicked story idea.
(For Tiggs: That's 'pissed' as in 'totally soused,' not 'angry.' ;) )

I've decided to scam Azerin's Angel/Demon premise, layer it with the old 'Good being the flip side of Evil' thing, and base it loosely upon two old Vanilla Fudge tracks. In this case, Good and Evil are twin sisters.

You Keep Me Hanging On

Set me free, why don't you babe?
Get out my life, why don't you babe?
You really don't want me, you just keep me hangin' on
You really don't need me, you just keep me hangin' on

Why do you keep comin' around playin' with my heart?
Why don't you get out of my life
And let me try to make a new start?
Let me get over you the way you've gotten over me

Set me free, why don't you babe?
Get out my life, why don't you now?
You really don't want me, you just keep me hangin' on
You really don't need me, you just keep me hangin' on

You said when we broke up you just wanna be friends
But how can we still be friends
When seein' you only breaks my heart again?
There ain't nothin' I can do about it

You know I really love - set me free, why don't you babe?
Talkin' 'bout love - get out my life, why don't you babe? Oooh
You really don't want me, you just keep me hangin' on
You really don't need me, you just keep me hangin' on
Get out my life, why don't you babe?
Get out my life, why don't you babe?
Get out my life, why don't you babe?
Get out my life, why don't you babe?

Take Me For A Little While

I been tryin' to make you love me
But ev'rything I tried just takes you further from me
You don't love me, no no, so you treat me cruel
Baby I need you
But no matter how you hurt me I'll always be a fool
If you don't want me, forever, if you don't need me - forever
And if you don't love me - forever
Take me for a little while - I gotta make you love me
For a little while - I just gotta make you want me

I got to stop it there should be a love
And no matter how you put me down I'll hurt you more
I feel so helpless - baby I need you
And it ain't funny - you know I need you
'Cos deep down inside I know you never gonna love me
If you don't want me - forever, if you don't need me - forever
If you can't love me - forever
Take me for a little while - I gotta make you love me
Take me for a little while - I gotta make you want me

Take me for a little while - baby can't you see
Take me for a little while - eh yeah oh come on
Take me for a little while ....

One of the best ways for quickly getting a story outline put together is to tear a beloved song apart and to thoroughly analyse it.

All through this thread I have been analysing a favourite song, and have been unable to discover anything other than a put-down against people who are into scat.

I can discover nothing else from Roger Miller's "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd."

Perhaps I like the wrong songs. :(

Into Temptation...

This one almost led to the end of me...

you opened up your door
I couldn't believe my luck
you in your new blue dress
taking away my breath
the cradle is soft and warm
couldn't do me no harm
you're showing me how to give
into temptation
knowing full well the earth will rebel
into temptation

a muddle of nervous words
could never amount to betrayal
the sentence is all my own
the price is to watch it fail
as I turn to go
you looked at me for half a second
with an open invitation for me to go

into temptation
knowing full well the earth will rebel
into temptation
safe in the wide open arms of hell

we can go sailing in
climb down, lose yourself when you linger long
into temptation
right where you belong

the guilty get no sleep
in the last slow hours of morning
experience is cheap
I should've listened to the warning
but the cradle is soft and warm

into temptation
knowing full well the earth will rebel
into your wide open arms
no way to break the spell
don't tell

...

It's by Crowded House. All their songs have great lyrics, mostly with a lovesick edge to them. Awesome melodramatic vocals too.

'Private Universe' is another that will alter your state of being:

I will run for shelter
endless summer lift the curse
it feels like nothing matters
in our private universe

if only i could write....

love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes

love, I don't like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

and all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes

Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." It always sounds to me like it's describing the feelings of someone who is in a strong, committed relationship at a time when that relationship is under heavy stress. The union will survive but these are the emotions and thoughts that arise while the crisis is still at hand. And the refrain "in your eyes" is the speaker of the song looking into his lover's eyes for reassurance again and again throughout the crisis.
