Deconstructing Songs

love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the insidehttp://www.literotica.com/forum/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&postid=1896545

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes

love, I don't like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

and all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes

Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." It always sounds to me like it's describing the feelings of someone who is in a strong, committed relationship at a time when that relationship is under heavy stress. The union will survive but these are the emotions and thoughts that arise while the crisis is still at hand. And the refrain "in your eyes" is the speaker of the song looking into his lover's eyes for reassurance again and again throughout the crisis.

'What If' - By Babyface

I ran into a friend of yours the other day
And I asked her how you've been
She said my girl is fine; just bought a house, got a job, real good man
I told her I was glad for you; that's wonderful
But does she ever ask `bout me?
She said she's happy with her life right now
Let her go, let her be
And I told myself I would, but something in my heart just would not let you go
I just wanna know

[Chorus:]
What if we were wrong about each other?
What if you were really made for me?
What if we was `sposed to be together?
Would that not mean anything?
What if that was `sposed to be my house that you go home to every day?
How can you be sure that things are better?
If you can't be sure your heart is still here with me
Still wanting me

Your friend asked me if there was someone special in my life that I was seeing
I told her there was no one in particular
There's just I, myself, and me
I told her that I dream of you quite often
She just cut her eyes at me
She said you got a home, you're very happy
So just stop your meddling
I told her that I won't
I said things were cool, but I guess I was wrong
I still can't move on

[Chorus]

Now that could be my car
That could be my house
That could be my baby boy that you're nursing
That could be the trash that I always take out
That could be the chair that I love to chill in
That could be my food on the table at the end of the day
Hugs and the kisses, all the love we make
What the hell do you expect me to say?
What if it's really `sposed to be this way?
What if you're really `sposed to be with me?

[Chorus fade-out]

---

Absolutely love this track. Songs of longing and regret always catch my attention. In this case, one of the lovers moved on with her life, while the other one hasn't at all. Nothing is addressed, nothing is resolved, but the question 'What If' is asked, over and over. He wants another shot. Will she abandon present happiness for something that may never materialize?

'Hell No' - By Melanie B

[Wait. Before you leave I've got something to say, so listen to me]

I know you wanted to hate me
When you found out that I lied, yeah
I wanna spend eternity
But you say you've been decieved
Now you say you wanna leave
But I say

Hell no, hell no - I won't let you leave me this time, no (no, whoa)
Hell no, hell no - Don't act like you never lied to me (don't act like you never lied to me)
Hell no, hell no - My actions are not just a fight (are not just a fight) Remember the many nights I cried
So hell no you can't leave me this time

Now under the circumstances
Do you remember what you did to me (to me)
When I found that other hootches pictures
Had 'em hid inside a Dru Hill cd

I'm not trying to go back and forth
I'm just trying to let you know
I've fogiven you a hundred times
So baby I'm not gonna let you go so

Hell no, hell no (hell no, hell no) - I won't let you leave me this time, no (don't leave me)
Hell no, hell no - Don't act like you never lied to me (don't act like you never lied)
Hell no, hell no (oh no)- My actions are not just a fight (I'm so sorry baby)
Remember the many nights I cried
Hell no you can't leave
This time (this time)

Don't leave me now
I'll be here if you stay (stay right here)

Hell no, hell no (Oh, no) - I won't let you leave me this time, no (don't leave me)
Hell no, hell no - Don't act like you never lied to me (oh don't you go away)
Hell no, hell no - My actions are not just a fight (I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry baby)
If I forgave you baby when you left
Hell no you can't leave me this time

Hell no, hell no (what do you think?) - I won't let you leave me this time, no (do you think I can be all alone?)
Hell no, hell no - Don't act like you never lied to me (but you lied to me before, yes you have)
Hell no, hell no - My actions are not just a fight (can you forgive me, can you forgive me baby?)
(Hell no) Hell no you can't leave me this time

Don't leave me no
Stay right here

A couple is on the outs over her infidelity. She refuses to let the relationship die. The reason? She's forgiven his cheatin' ass several times in the past.

A great tune, with ideas that invite speculation. Is this really a solid relationship? Why would he want her? Why would she remain with him? Does she deserve another chance? Did he? Why would these two philanderers even try to stay together in a supposedly monogamous relatiuonship?

The only thing that is certain is that when vocalized, her grief and remorse sound real. Assuming that it is, is there even a relationship here to save?

There are many stories here, methinks.

This one's for Tiggs:

One of the best ways for quickly getting a story outline put together is to tear a beloved song apart and to thoroughly analyse it. A song is essentially a tightly woven story written to maximize its emotional impact in a minimum amount of space and time. True, songs rely on melody to create their effect, but I have found that the level of craft that goes into most songwriting to be very high. The structure also lends itself well to the short story format.

I guess I should finally read this since this thread is for me, eh? ;) This morning, at 5am Central time, I have done just this. I have finally broken my writer's block. The words flow, page by page, from me. The song, one that meant a lot to me and made me think about my life in high school. Though, as I said, I was in high school when I faced these life problems, the character, for Lit, is not. ;) A lot of my real feelings and emotions are coming out in this epic tale. Stay tuned...

I'm glad it helped. What's the track?

One of the best lyrics ever!

..."If I cannot sleep with you,
maybe I can have a taste?
But your fanny on my tongue
and your booty on my chest!"

Boom Boom Boom by The Outthere Brothers

Now THAT'S the attitude I like!:p

Of course I will.

This song had a lot of meaning to me and "changed" my life in my mid teens.

This concept of a story I've been toying with for quite some time now.

I will also be incorporating an earlier part of my life, but, of course, the character will be 18 or "ageless" for Lit.

He came to town like a midwinter storm
He rode to the hills so handsome and strong
and all the girls they left their homes
and left lonely men 'cause of Cotton-Eye Joe...

Yes, I might be mixing a few lines up...

I want a little sugar
in my bowl
I want a little sweetness
down in my soul
I could stand some lovin'
Oh so bad
Feel so lonely and I feel so sad

I want a little steam
on my clothes
Maybe I could fix things up
so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on, save my soul
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin'
Drop a little sugar in my bowl

Well I want a little sugar
in my bowl
Well I want a little sweetness
down in my soul
You been acting strangely
I've been told
Move me Daddy
I want some sugar in my bowl
I want a little steam
on my clothes
Maybe I can fix things up so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on save my soul
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin'
Drop some sugar- yeah- in my bowl.

A song by the incomparable Nina Simone. Makes me want to give her a sweet, sticky deposit where she'd like it the most. Sensuality w/o vulgarity. Sometimes the old stuff works best for me.

Nina is amazing. My absolute favorite jazz artist. She can be sweet as sugar or vulgar as a sailor and do it all flawlessly in her own unique style. Awesome.

I deconstruct songs a lot as inspiration for writing. Maybe not as the entire plot from beginning to end, but maybe for a scene, at least. I've been meaning to co-opt this song for my own nefarious writing purposes for some time now, but I've been too busy.

You say that I treat you like a book on a shelf.
I don't take you out that often
Because I know that I completed you
And that is why you are here
That's the reason you stay here--
How awful that must feel.

You said you would be my dream
I could have you every night
And if, by morning, I'd forgotten you
Well, no big deal
It would be all right
Because you're the reoccurring kind
You are the reoccurring kind
You never really leave my mind.

Are you the love of my lifetime?
Because there've been times I've had my doubts
We were both kids when I first kissed you
In the attic of my parents' house
And I wish we were there now
It took so long to figure out
What this book has been about.

Now I write when I'm away
Letters that you never read
You said go explore those other women
The geography of their bodies
But there is just one map you'll need
You're a boomerang, you'll see
You will return to me.

[You will, you will, you will, you will . . . etc.]

Because if you don't, then this book is all lies
If you don't, then my plans will all be ruined
If you don't, I'll start drinking like the way I drank before
And I just won't have a future anymore.

Very cool. Which song is this? Who's the artist?

Very cool. Which song is this? Who's the artist?

The song is called something to the effect of "You Will. You Will. You Will. You Will." Kind of an awkward title; I just call it "You Will." The band is Bright Eyes, who is really just this guy from Omaha, Nebraska. He writes songs with all these great analogies that I totally want to steal :).

I'm gonna give it to ya
just the way you like it.

I'm gonna give it to ya
just the way you want it.

I'm gonna give it to ya
just the way you love it.

I'm gonna give it to ya
just the way you need it.

Gonna make you WHOOF!
like a dog!

Whoof!
Whoof!

Just Friends -- Musiq Soulchild

Girl I know this might seem strange
But let me know if I'm out of order
For stepping to you this way
See I've been watching you for a while
And I just gotta let you know
That I'm really feeling your style
Cause I have to know your name
And leave you with my number
And I hope that you would call me someday
If you want you can give me yours too
And if you don't I ain't mad at'cha
We can still be cool cause

I'm not trying to pressure you
Just can't stop thinkin' 'bout you
You ain't even really gotta be my girlfriend
I just wanna know your name
And maybe some time
We can hook up, hang out, just chill

Damn I'm surprised that you called
Cause the way you walked away
I thought I wasn't gon see you no more
Since you didn't wanna give me your name
I thought that you were iggin' me
And wasn't diggin' me
But anyway what you doing tonight
I'll probably be with my peeps
If it's cool with you maybe we'll swing by
And you can just chill with us
Or you can just chill with me
As long as you're comfortable
And you feel secure when your with me cause

I'm not trying to pressure you
Just can't stop thinkin' 'bout you
You ain't even really gotta be my girlfriend
I just wanna know your name
And maybe some time
We can hook up, hang out, just chill

Oh, oh, baby yeah
Maybe we can oh
Go and see a movie girl
Or maybe we can hang out girl
Whatever you wanna do
Just let me know
It's up to you

I'm not trying to pressure you
Just can't stop thinkin' 'bout you
You ain't even really gotta be my girlfriend
I just wanna know your name
And maybe some time
We can hook up, hang out, just chill

I'm not trying to pressure you
Just can't stop thinkin' 'bout you
You ain't even really gotta be my girlfriend
I just wanna know your name
And maybe some time
We can hook up, hang out, just chill

Love this one. He wants her bad, but is willing to take it slow in order to set her mind at ease. It still feels like BS, though ...

Jasmine -- Black Rob

Jasmine

(Verse One)

Yo had me in the LQ
Yo shit was mad bumpin
Rappers on the mic was like settin off somethin
Now parties like this yo god
I like lougin observin everything inside my surrounding
Jasmine dancin wit this non-descrip sucka
Okay cool as long as the sucka don't touch her
Nigga
Get the urge and can't control his hand
Get a body bag cause "mauh" he's a dead man
She was coolin sportin my table
When the dance was done she like walked back to money's table
I sat there like shit I can't believe this
I wish you was there big fella so you could see this bitch
Sittin there boo legs wide open laughin gigglin smilin and jokin wit homes
Like they use to hang out real real tough
He musta had a strong rap cause Jasmine looked gased up
Sittin there played the role of a slouch
Just watchin to see how Jasmine played herself out
They sat there just talkin to each other
I thought this kid was alone he had five more brothas wit him
Wit out girl's night ain't this some shit
If she don't recognize the game they can kiss this shit
They introduced theyselves one at a time
Saw 'em say how you doin so Jasmine say "fine"
I was laughin but there was more in store
I saw her get up and start walkin towards the front door
I rolls too god and walked right behind em
So where ever they go it won't be hard to find em
I keep a guard you now I thought I better
Plus I keep the stash deep inside the 8 pound leather
Open doors vale was on the ready
At the end Jasmine is gonna wish she never met me
We're off two cars speedin deep in the night
I'm doin 30 on the straight away 60 on the turnpike
For Jasmine

(Chorus)
Know that i've got Jasmine on my mind
Ohhhhh
Playa freeze while I pull out my nine
Know that i've got Jasmine on my mind
Ohhhhh

(Verse Two)

Word up ain't nothin changed but the weather
Still chasin them suckas in the '86 Jetta
Thinkin different thoughts still not understandin
How 7 people got in that fuckin Volkswagen
Enough of that god yo back to the chase
Yo man you should've seen the ruckus look on my face
Slowin down cruisin on the cool out mode
Then parked in front of his house on Gunhill road
Man I started to get out
Grabbed the rope and try to hang her
Before I let this posse drop shots gang bang her
They went inside man but I kept goin
Parked across the street wit out them even knowin
Got out the car still schemin the house
Tip toed around the back quiet like a church mouse
If the neighbors looked out the window
They would surely get leerly and scream like "BAHANDO"
Police they would hold my fate
But they didn't so I creeped up the fire escape
I saw shadow's inside a bright lit room
Which appear to be two bodies dancin to a slow song nigga
I got closer decided I should check it
I saw Jasmine and one of them kids dancin buck naked
So I got the gat so I have no interference
When I make my grand appearance
For Jasmine

(Chorus)

(Verse Three)

I seen a red dot tryna lock on me
I can't believe these niggas tryna pull a pac on me
I admit they had the drop on me
Probably turned the burner around 20 degrees
So I could see
Who bust me
Who knocked me out
Who tried to choak
Who tied the rope
Who left me this bitch ass note
I'm disgusted the murder she wrote
Money she oaked all of my coke all of dope
Up in smoke
Made you follow me probably so mad you wanna hollow me
But you won't be so lucky today so swallow me
Got your GS4 and your Bently rose took all of your clothes
And 99 bottles of Mo's
What she didn't know is about the dynamite in the rose
And if I get close I'll blow her cause I got the controls
At the toll on the phone wit this bitch Nicole
Said she left you in some hotel out in the road
Room 112 penthouse sweet alumni
On the 12th floor in front of her door was one guy
On some Brandon Lee shit he wasn't handin me shit
Understand me he flipped bust the 9 and he split
Had my heat cocked busted right through the sheet rock
How'd he drop he ain't the nigga I just shot
Whas goin on all of a sudden it was nothin no jokin son
Jasmine holdin the smokin gun
By the time I realized I caught two in the chest had the vest
As I fell I'm not thinkin of death
Still fallin to a place wit more conscience though
Long enough to see her aim and put one in her throat
So I got up all shot up grabbed the Prada
Faggots probably towed my truck
You know how my luck
Hoped in bleedin to death turned left
Thought of Jasmine and how she went out to the death
For Jasmine

(Chorus)

Some Melancholia on a Saturday

Jazz. Always a good place to seek inspiration.

"When Sunny Gets Blue"

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy,
Then the rain begins to fall, pitter-patter, pitter-patter,
Love is gone, what can matter, no sweet lover man comes to call.

When Sunny gets blue, she breaths a sigh of sadness,
Like the wind that stirs the trees,
Wind that sets the leaves to swaying
Like some violin is playing strange and haunting melodies.

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile,
That's how she got her name.
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style,
Somehow she's not the same.

Pretty dreams will rise up where her other dreams fell through,
Hurry new love, hurry here, to kiss away each lonely tear,
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue.

Autumn leaves

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold....
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands, I used to hold
Since you went away, the days grow long
And soon I'll hear ol' winter's song.
But I miss you most of all my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall.

Since you went away, the days grow long
And soon I'll hear ol' winter's song.
But I miss you most of all my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall.
