Did the world shake for Emily Miller

So, earthquake, solar eclipse... what other signs that The End Is Nigh for you people in the US?

I have lived in Taiwan and I’m glad I live in a place far less prone to earthquakes now.

It was actually a shallow epicenter, but I'll still go with rigid rock.

The USGS site for the incident is here.

I was working from home and we are only about 10 miles west of the epicenter. Shook the fuck out of our house, I thought it was an explosion.

I thought maybe our furnace had blown up.

All ok. No damage.

In a few weeks, billions of cicadas will emerge. With ocean temperatures in the North Atlantic already at or near summer levels, we'll likely need to invent a group name for hurricanes this summer (my vote is for 'a swirling'). And let's not get started on other voting.

I'm in Northern California where we had a nearby 4.4 last night. I was in a Zoom meeting when someone who is only a couple of miles from me said she felt it. I didn't know we had one until I checked my MyShake app.

oh I get it. Everyone all concerned about @EmilyMiller but no one's asked about MY status.

I know where I stand here now thanks. 😆 🤣 😂

I was working in a school near McGuire Airforce base. I thought it was just a low flying military plane or something.
I didn't know you lived in Jersey, man. I wasn't even aware of the quake there until I saw this thread. Slept nine hours after a writing binge to finish a new story last night.

I'm glad you and EmilyMiller are ok.

I hope the earthquake in her neck of the woods was survivable and did not interrupt her writing?
Hi,

Been working - I do that intermittently between posting here and writing 😬.

I’ve experienced a few quakes before, back in PA. But that was my first Jersey one and it was quite something. Kinda shook me up. But have checked the basement and no cracked pipes that either of us could see anyway, and G&E seems fine. No power cuts.

Thanks for asking 😊

Been looking - there have been a couple of quakes since I moved here, but they were 2.x and I can’t say I ever noticed or read anything. Given it’s a log scale, 4.8 is a big difference. If I understand right, at least 100 times more poweful.

I have colleagues all over the place. The NYC ones felt it. Even those WFH north of the City felt it.

Thanks.

it's not like I've announced where I live on any regular basis. Usually that's stuff we tend to keep to ourselves.

and of course I was just having some fun with the thread.

I've seen no news reports of any damage or injuries or anything.

Hopefully the worst of it was as the meme above suggests, some lawn chairs or trash cans tipped over.

How the hell did you feel a 5.1 across several states? As someone who has experienced more than a few 4+ and 5+ magnitude earthquakes, I can testify that a 5.1 earthquake won't be felt from more than about 200 km distance, although the terrain plays some role here.
Yeah as a native of California a 4 or 5 would barely get me to look up from my monitor.

BUT... if you live in Earthquake country everything around you is built for them. Lots of flexible components like wood and metal instead of any brick, concrete, or stone.

When I was in the military I was stationed in the Midwest for training at one point when I was much younger and I recall being very nervous about the concrete and brick buildings until it was explained that the threat wasn't quakes but wind and snow.

From what I've heard about the place, most earthquakes would bring only improvement.
Jersey is a mixed bag. Yeah there is a lot of light industrial and strip malls. A lot of samey suburbs (I live in one). Some of the rural bits are pretty poor. Trenton is not going to win any civic awards. I had to go to Elizabeth a few weeks back. That was kinda interesting. But, there are also lots of lovely bits. Quaint and pretty towns. Lovely woods and forests. Lakes and escarpments. And some really cool communities and more of a sense of being part of one than I recall in PA.

And vultures, I love vultures 😍.

Glad to hear that you are all okay!

That's you and the other east coast authors are good!
