Sweetheart, I'm probably much better educated than you are (two bachelor's, almost finished with my master's). I've raised three kids, two of which are college-educated, as well (my youngest is still in grade school, but he'll get there, too).

I've worked most of my life, at professional, well-paid jobs, we just bought a very nice home with a pool and some land, and my husband makes enough that I can sit on my ass if I want to.

How's those stereotypes holding up for ya?

this is more of what I actually expected from you.....

I'm only talking about rising up above poverty and doing it by working hard and determination and not letting anything stand in your way ..and you revert to "pretending" that I was insulting all indians...you do realize that this started out about hatians right??

you are succesful so why can't anyone in poverty do what you have done?

For your information, I come from a third-world country. I have seen more than you will ever in your life. And I don't need anyone, anyone, to tell me to 'rise above.' I'm sure in 10 years, I'll be 10 kms above you.

I'll try, just one more time, to make it clear to you:

1) You don't live in Haiti, have never lived there, so you can't even pretend to understand what it's like for the people there. Living in the US, even at incomes well below the poverty level, is so far above what those people have that you make yourself appear ridiculous trying to compare your situation to theirs.

2) You were insulting everyone that lives in places other than middle America by assuming that all they need to do is "try harder" and they'll be successful. I'm sorry that you don't understand how utterly ludicrous that is, but take my word for it: nothing is that damn simple.

3) I didn't "rise above" anything. I was lucky enough to be born into a family that was comfortable. I had more than a lot of kids. Yes, I paid for my own school, but mostly with scholarships and grants. Don't patronize me. You're not very good at it.

I'm sorry but you're completely wrong. I do get out and have probably been in more states and countries then you have or will be, including third world countries.

All it takes to succeed is the right attitude and work ethic. that is a bit simplistic but that also includes networking and making friends and helping each other and taking advantage of every oportunity. You did it. I do it. people like dina do it. people Ive met that have "risen above" here in the states and in third world countries have done it. anyone can do it.

anything less is the victim mentality.

You're wrong. I made it very clear in my first post in this thread that the people in Haiti had not given up.

All I'm saying is that not everything is as simple as 'do not give up, you can do anything you want, just keep on trying.' Life does not have a happy ending for everyone.

lol ok ok..but really despite all the hard feelings ...my basic point was..that people thruought history hve overcome incredible ods to become successful and incredible lives. even native americans born into poverty and even haitians. there are some living wealthy lifestyles right here in america as i write this. There are people from the slums of mexico city ...who own thier own business in san jose and new york. There are people from the poorest country in africa who have become world leaders and famous authors.

I think I got a little bent out of shape when it seemed that ..I was being told that it's impossible to live a better life if you've been born in certain situations no matter what you do. and that if I was actually living there i would be just as hopeless.

I just disagree with that. I'll give you guys actual names and historically correct stories if you want them? I'll even google resources that are availablel to native americans in this country, and organizations that are trying to make a difference in haiti and other countries.

they can live a better life it they want to.. it might not be easy but it can be done.
