Endless Curiosity

Question of the day:

Lit is a small community, a certain amount of board diplomacy keeps things running. If you’ve been here any length of time you’ve had relationships end, romantic or platonic. How do yours general end? Good, bad, or do they just fade away?

Bonus: Mindfondler, what are your fetishes? (You didn't really think I'd let that slide, did you?)

I haven’t had many friendships end. Well, Sickie, but that’s not what you meant. Miss the Sickie. Lets see:

Good:
- Lit Girlfriends - I have one that’s currently on monthly *proof of life* check-ins. :p (She’s busy with real-time.).
- Ex-Play Partner - Still good friends.

Bad:
- Other - There is one Litster who won’t talk to me anymore because I turned down play. I hesitate to categorize that as full-on bad, but not entirely pleasant.

I do have several more casual friendships that sort of fade in and out, but nothing that really warrants calling it an ‘end’.

Bonus: Yes! Tell us your fetishes, MF. :p

Bonus 2: Someone define the difference between fetish and kink. I’ve read several times, but the line remains unclear….

Well VT...

My dearest friend on the planet is a lovely dame from NYC. Been back there x 4 to visit her. Met her family. She has taken me all over NYC; a whole new world. Bilingual and professional. I write, txt, or email and send articles several times a week for almost 4 years. The woman I am currently seeing lives many hours away, and I met her here. You have to be retired to do what I do; and I know how lucky I am to find such wonderful people. There are other sites; but nothing like this one.

My understanding is that in their most distinct uses, the two are not the same, but in common usage the two words are often used interchangeably. A fetish is a focal point for sexual arousal that is both strong and necessary for arousal. Thus a shoe fetishist would be unable to achieve arousal in the absence of shoes. A kink, on the other hand, might also be a quite strong force. A kink is sufficient for arousal, but not necessary. Kinksters can be and do get aroused without the presence of their kink (bondage, just to pick one), but they reach their highest level of arousal and satisfaction through their kink.

Thank you, Yank. That is what I've read. Where I get into trouble is the line between the two, I suppose.

*TMI alert*

I just...do not get aroused without some type of power exchange dynamic. It may be as simple as me fantasizing being bound, etc. during otherwise vanilla sex, but there is always... something. Vanilla sex alone might work on the rare occasion, but...yeah, I'm not actually sure that's even true.

So, on the fetish/kink spectrum, where does that lie?

What you're describing is a kink so long as it's still possible for you to get aroused without the presence of power exchange, even if it's mostly through mental imagery in the moment. Since you said that vanilla sex does work for you occasionally, it's likely not a fetish.

This brings me to a further distinction that I hadn't considered earlier: fetishes tend to be narrow while kinks tend to be broad. By that, I mean that fetishes tend to be limited to one class of items, people, or activities. People with kinks tend to respond to a wide range of related stimuli. A fetishist might be aroused exclusively by a woman wearing shoes but a kinkster might be aroused by almost any expression of dominance through restraint. Whether the restraint is executed with rope, ribbons, dental floss, or duct tape might be irrelevant so long as there is restraint.

I'm glad to say that I'm still in contact with many Litsters that I've met over all of the years that I've been here. It might be only occasional or sporadic, but we can still pick up where we left off. I'd classify those as "good", and not necessarily an ending. I don't recall any bad experiences, just some sad ones. Most commonly, though, contacts just fade away as we find that we don't have enough in common to be worthwhile (like an unstated mutual decision).

Bonus 2: Someone define the difference between fetish and kink. I’ve read several times, but the line remains unclear….
I'll have a try! As I understand it, a kink is something that one enjoys and that lies outside the established norm, but isn't a psychological dependency. A fetish is something (an object or a body part) that one needs for sexual arousal or satisfaction.

Bonus: Mindfondler, what are your fetishes? (You didn't really think I'd let that slide, did you?)
Do you really expect me to reveal that I need to smear peanut butter all over tinglebliss every time before we have sex? :D

Ahh. Okay. The line is still fuzzy when it comes to mental imagery not being inclusive, but the broad versus narrow explanation makes perfect sense. My focus is not necessarily specific. It's not one type of bondage, or one type of power exchange. There may be things I prefer, but there is range. I am, to a certain extent, mutable.

Thank you. Thank you very much for clearing that up! :rose:

- The bolded is my trouble spot. I would classify my, errr, thing as a psychological dependency.

- I...you people are really going to have to stop giving me this visuals first thing in the morning. I have the day to get through, people!

Pardon, but it appears that you raised the question and no one held a non-paleo croissant to your head and forced you to visualize the examples we offered.

A couple have just faded away, because the people themselves have stopped visiting here. Real life must always come first. I get it. Everyone else I still keep contact with, though the relationship may have shifted to a different plane. Just like in real life; I don't have many exes, but I'm still friends or at least cordial with all of them.
