July 4th will be a Tuesday, so probably something basic and nutritious (e.g. grilled salmon), possibly after a run earlier in the evening.

Happy Father's Day! I hope it was a good one.

I usually stay indoors unless the temperature is under 65F (very rare). I will probably eat a salad of strawberries, white grapes, and blueberries, followed by a crustless quiche and a baby arugula salad. I despise fireworks so I plan to spend the evening re-reading The Communist Manifesto, as I usually do on July 4.

Hmmmm. I'm not entirely certain I see you as one of the proletariate, but.... Okay.

And I must say, while that menus does not scream traditional Fourth of July food, it sounds quite tasty.

The End of the Affair. I've been fascinated with that movie since first view. The raw display of emotion. The bond that refused to be broken. Her rigid attempt at self-denial to keep the agreement with her deity of choice. His enduring, unending passion and the lengths to which it drove him. Possible? Fact or fiction?

I've never seen either of those, but will keep an eye out for them. In general, I'm not a movie person either. I like movies for the entertainment value, but few of them stick with me in my mind for more than a day.

That said, I like anything with Jack Nicholson - Cuckoo's Nest for one, but As Good As it Gets with Jack, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and that cute little dog is the all time favorite. It has it all a great story, wacky romance, good characters and great writing.

Comedy - Austin Powers. The original one only. So much good stupid comedy and a great parody of the Bond movies. I loved it.

I'm not a real horror or space fan, but did like Alien and John Carpenter's 'The Thing'. Both are memorable.


Netflix has a really crappy selection of movies. Discuss.

The Thing!!!


Okay. That might jump to my number one spot. I adore that movie. It is, in a word, awesome.

There was an earlier version from the same source material. That was also entertaining, though entirely different in plot. The Thing from Another World, I think. I also liked Alien, but Aliens was even better. After that, meh.


Netflix has...yeah. I have caught some stuff worth a watch. Offbeat, quirky, but entertaining. I can't think of any titles at the moment. Naturally.

Please note that my salad will be red, white, and blue. As for the rest of the menu, the traditional foods that we associate with patriotic holidays in the U.S. are all killers. As you know from my posts elsewhere, I rarely ever eat such things as cheeseburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, potato salads and such artery-clogging fare.*

* Your definition of "rarely" may differ from mine.

Movies, eh? I really don't know how to define "top 3."

Does this mean I should name the three movies I have enjoyed that I think are the best movies ever made? That would lead me to name Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and The Godfather (at least among movies made in English).

Are we looking for the three movies that I enjoyed the most when I [first] watched them? This list would include The Graduate, A Man and a Woman, and Allegro non Troppo.

How about the three movies that I return to most often for re-watching? That would be Top Gun (already on my calendar to see it in 70mm in a couple weeks), Star Wars, and Apollo 13 (sense a theme here, anyone?)

Or are we interested in the three movies that most moved me at the time? These would be City Lights, The Rules of the Game, and Breaking the Waves.


Or maybe the three movies that I enjoyed the most despite their being in a language that I did not speak or read? These would have been I am Curious (Yellow), In the Realm of the Senses, and The Triumph of the Will.

Finally, maybe we're interested in the three movies that made me laugh the hardest? These would be Some Like it Hot, The Palm Beach Story, and The Gumball Rally.

I could go on, but you're all now bored and have moved on, haven't you?

I have great difficulty with "Top N" lists as my nominations vary depending on my mood (even my top three Doctor Who lead actors change from time to time). I'm also going to resist the temptation to select a top three of worthy films that might look good on a list but that I don't really enjoy (or haven't seen). That leaves me with a more practical (and hopefully less variable) category of top three films that I keep going back to and that I continue to enjoy even after multiple views.

1. Shaun of the Dead (2004) — It's cleverly understated (distinctively British) and yet one of the funniest films that I've seen, with the humour running the whole gamut from visceral gore to insightful wit. I've lost count of the number of times that I've viewed it, but I continue to spot new references or visual gags as I do so. It's also extremely quotable.

(Runner up: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) — also directed by Edgar Wright, similarly ridiculous and infectiously so)

2. Secretary (2002) — A great deal has been written about this film by Litsters over the years, so it's probably a firm favourite here. I've heard plenty of people say, though, that they don't get it or even hate it (e.g. "the guy's a creep!", "why does the woman let herself down by acting like that?"), so it might be necessary for one's brain to be wired in a certain way to enjoy it. There's a particular scene in the film that causes me to melt every time — and it's not the sp***ing one!

3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) — Sometimes, a film comes along at a formative time in one's life and makes a lasting impression (possibly way beyond the objective merits of the film). That's the case here! I saw it when I was a fresh-faced and strait-laced lad at university, and it played to a rebellious and unconventional streak that had lain dormant in my mind up to then. I wouldn't say that it caused me to start a revolution overnight, but it made me realise for the first time that perhaps it was okay to be a little bit naughty from time to time.

Ask me on a different night, though, and I'll still probably give you a different list.

I don't normally post in here, but I do lurk, and couldn't resist a movie question. I love the movies in general...and like everyone else, name my Top 3 is hard, and often one of these moves off the list for a while, but for the most part this is it..

Clerks - my all time most favorite movie. I love the dialogue, the reality of it (this was way before "reality tv" even). The fact that it was shot on a small budget by a guy who just loved movies and wanted to make them...I know all the dialogue by heart and still laugh when I watch it.

Sliding Doors - now, I am not a Gwenyth Paltrow fan, and especially when she's doing a whole "British thing", but I adore this movie. "What if" movies are hard to make...I often get confused when the story line isn't completely linear, but this one is so well done. I can watch it over and over.

Bad Moms - I have never laughed so hard in my life. I confess that I am a "Bad Mom". The scene with the therapist could be my reality! I love the message that we are a just moms...just trying to do our best and make sure our kids grow up happy and healthy. That we need to support each other and not criticize everyone...Love it!

I don't like gory movies, for gore's sake, but I abeolutely love revenge movies. Give me somebody who has been seriously wronged and he can boil as many bad guys as he wants. Taken and Law Abiding Citizen are two of my faves.

Finally, I'm a huge fan of 50s Sci-fi and monster movies. Give me the entire Godzilla series, Planet of the Apes, King Kong or the Blob, and I'm very happy.

I love those old movies too. With the very primitive special effects, like a giant iguana that sticks his tongue out in a threatening way. Or the ones where you can actually see the strings attached to the fake monster.

Of course, I'll also be looking forward to the next installment of Sharknado or Sharktopus.

UHF- I'm a big Weird Al fan....(hears the sounds of crickets)

Transformers- Not the recent ones, but the cartoon movie back in the 80's. Huge fan.

Yes! I love the old Godzilla films. I will always love big monsters fighting.

Transformers- Not the recent ones, but the cartoon movie back in the 80's. Huge fan.

That was the first movie I ever saw in the cinema. Still a favourite, and the 80s power rock soundtrack is freaking awesome!

1. Hitch... there's nothing like it!!! Comedy, romance. Sigh.
2. Fracture ... suspenseful and captivating
3. Pearl Harbor

It's hard to keep it to only three when there are so many wonderful movies out there.

Casablanca, Dirty Dancing, We Were Soldiers, Braveheart, etc etc
