People do need affirmation they exist. Some sort of response, any sort of acknowledgement, even a negative response is better than silence.

I have to say, I am really bad at keeping up conversations in threads. I'm much better in pm's. And those "poster above you" threads? Once I post there, I rarely go back to see what others post next about me. So if no one responds to me...not only don't I mind, but most times I don't even know. So if I appear to be ignoring you it may be that I'm just distracted, or lazy.

Completely depends on my mood. If I'm not interested in chat or interaction, I may easily just lurk. Or I might just make a couple of quick posts on regular threads. Or I might get on and play on the boards, dependent on who is on and what happening.

It really depends on my mood and whether I'm feeling social.

I try to just lurk if I have nothing to add, or if it's a train wreck where spectating is much wiser. Of course, sometimes I think I have something to add when I don't, but that's another issue

I've reached the point where I'm fairly comfortable on the board. Still, there are places I rarely post. Typically where I feel my contributions have been continuously ignored. In those cases I generally just move on. Nice as it is to be noticed, I don't feel anyone is obligated to acknowledge my presence. Why would I?

It would be incredibly easy to get bogged down trying to acknowledge every post. And then there are the posters you don't "click" with, or particularly care for their personality. Be polite, certainly, it's what makes the board habitable, but are you really obliged to interact?

Like most people, I gravitate to those that I find likable, or companionable. I do my best to acknowledge new posters, and I try to be encouraging to posters new to a thread. But, honestly, my time here is limited, and I choose to interact with...who I choose to interact with. Presumably those that don't acknowledge me are doing the same.

Exactly. And things change. There has been more that one thread where I've been a regular, but then the vibe or the people changed, or I simply lost interest.

In those cases, unless it's my thread, meaning a thread I am maintaining, then it's just time to move on.

Some people complain about being ignored and skipped (remember the whole "Insider" conversion?) but I think it is better to just ignore them if you think you will end up clashing with them. Getting into a public argument is decidedly less desirable then just ignoring them.

Nobody should expect to be answered, because it's too easy to be disappointed that way. Sometimes people try too hard, it just feels awkward. I'm guilty of this at times Am I doing it right now? I might be doing it right now ..
