Angelique, you're absolutely right about "Phantom". We saw it in Toronto about 2 years ago, then saw the touring company here in Pittsburgh last fall and were so disappointed. The effects were awful, the sound was awful, and the girl who played Christine was just not very good. I was really disappointed when the closed the production in Toronto last fall - I would've like to have gone there one more time before they did. Oh, well.

Here we go then, in no particular order:

1 Floyd
2 The Beatles
3 Led Zep
4 Mediaeval Babes
5 Fleetwood Mac
6 Metallica
7 REM
8 Elgar
9 Smetana
10 Verdi
11 Kate Bush
12 Clannad
13 All About Eve
14 Mark Knopfler
15 Jethro Tull

There are so many more.

Same here Lasher...the gal who played Christine tonight was just "ok". Beautiful voice, but not nearly enough power behind it. I wasn't fond of this particular Raoul, either. The guy who played Phantom was really, really good, tho'. Madame Giry was awesome...was NOT impressed with Meg Giry at all! She had a REALLY wimpy voice! My folks went up to Toronto last year to see Phantom when Paul Stanley played the lead...said he was actually really good, but a little overdramatic. Could you even IMAGINE him playing the part?

We had 4th row seats tonight, which was GREAT for my 7 year old daughter, but even she said "Mommy, it wasn't as good as the last time we saw it." (which was in Toronto) I ended up getting stuck in front of a "real winner" tonight...a guy that actually fell asleep during the performance and was obnoxiously snoring through the last half. GRRRR...I should post that one on the Blurgh thread!

Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Joseph..., Cabaret, Cats, JC Superstar are ALL great to listen to.

If I'm not mistaking, I think Bonnie Tyler sings on the "Whistle Down the Wind" CD (another ALW production)...there's a blast from the past!

So cool to see others on the board who enjoy theater.

Musicals scare me. Can you imagine if in real life people broke into song&dance numbers spontaneously, for any and no reason? I'm not a suicidal person, but I don't think I could live in a world like that.

I've never seen Grease all the way through (just bits here and there). I have only a vague idea about the plot. Never seen cats, or Les Miserables, or Phantom of the Opera. I'm sure I'm missing out on a huge part of popular culture. The key to the mysteries of life are probably hidden in musicals. But I'll never know. 'Cause every time I try to watch one, and the whole gang's at a bowling alley or hanging out in a park having a normal conversation, and suddenly some guy starts belting out some stilted Broadway tune and the whole alley/park/whatever forms a chorus line behind him, my stomach turns acidic and I have to leave the room. It's something I can't explain, like my fear of slugs and snails.

LMAO@Laurel! Too funny...and I think if I were at a bowling alley where people spontaneously broke out into song & dance, I'd run like hell!

But, I think it's nice that my children are being exposed to more than just pop music. At the age of 7, I didn't know the difference between a violin and a guitar. Hell, the both looked the same to me! My daughter is very much into music appreciation, not just listening to music. What a better place for her to gain that type of exposure than musical theater.

I'm not doggin' on anyones taste, mind you. Just goes to show you that there are different strokes for different folks.

Sammyjo...

It was the Mamas and the Papas that made my husband believe you were older. Plus, since you had said Kansas and ABBA, he figured you might have been a teen in the late 70s. I saw Kansas open for Styx a few years ago, and for some old, haggardly dudes...they both rocked harder than ever...best damn concert I had ever seen!

Ahh well...

I, too, being into the whole classic rock genre, feel that I was born about a decade too late. My all-time favorite rock band is Cheap Trick. (Lead singer Robin Zander--YUM!--was my first heavy duty crush...OH!...and Peter Frampton, too...but now he looks about as sexy as my bald grandfather.)

I'm also into some new age (ie. Ottmar Liebert), classical (Baroque era especially), and that really sexy, soulful jazz (ie. Paul Hardcastle) for when I just want to chill or feel sensual.

More current faves include Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox, No Doubt (their new one is Sssssmokin'!), Collective Soul, and...and...damn...I'm drawing a blank.

But my most favorite kind of music...I would have to say is......

Elevator.

Damn...sorry folks. Error on my part.

Hmm, let's see now.

U2-Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum
Billy Idol
INXS
Alan Jackson
Robbie Williams
Aerosmith
Harry Connick Jr.
Chris Gaines-LMAO
Lenny Kravitz-5
Harley-Davidson Road Songs Vol. 1

Wow, I just noticed they're all men. I wonder what that says about me? LOL

I hear what you're saying Angelique. We were 10th row center for "Phantom" in Toronto and I'm not sure anything could compare to it. I wanted to see the show with Paul Stanley, but being a life long Kiss fan I decided it would be too much for my mind to handle and might just lead to insanity.

Here's one thing that's always bugged me. I understand that Raoul is supposed to be a pretty boy - but both times I've seen it he's just been a little too pretty. Which means I always end up wanting the Phantom to win...but then Christine is always too shallow to understand that she should be with the Phantom...that would be a much more exciting life for her.

Btw, something that really suprised me was the number of people that brought children with them. "Cabaret" isn't really something that's really acceptable or understandle for children and I was amazed at the number of parents that didn't realize that. Fortunately for them I guess, the Gay Men sitting next to us pointed out that the Broadway production of Cabaret was much raunchier....

Uhhh...yep, you're right, Laurel, most of the secrets to life are hidden in musicals. Hehehe, actually I'm kinda picky about that sort of thing, I look for shows with power and emotion ( I actually shed a couple of tears when Eponine sings "On My Own" in "Les Mis"), and shit like "Grease" and "Cats" just leaves me cold ("Cats" has got to be the most god awful piece of crap I've seen on a stage). I get to see more than my share cause it gives my wife a reason to dress up and spend an ungodly amount of money on a meal (We spent $200 Canadian on a meal in Toronto before "Phantom" - the cool thing with Canadian money you don't know how much you're actually spending so it doesn't really bother you).... I wouldn't have gone to "Cabaret" on my own, but my wife wanted to see it, and it turns out that the first act is pretty good - but they lost me with the second act though. Seems like they couldn't decide whether to be serious or entertaining, and in the second act they make the wrong choice. Oh well.....

I agree, Lasher. But regardless of whether he's too pretty or not, every time I see it, I always end up shedding a few tears at the end when she chooses Raoul over Phantom. Stupid, I know...I've seen it enough times to KNOW how it ends, but then again, I'm a bit of a softy, and always seem to root for the underdog.

Oh, in case ya' didn't know, there's a sequel to Phantom out at the bookstore, titled "Phantom of Manhattan". A bit different, but not a bad book. Also, ALW is considering the sequel for production, as he collaborated w/the author on the book. I got a sneak peak at one of the songs "The Heart Is Slow To Learn" sung by Dame Kiri TiKaniwa (or however the heck you spell her name). I'm not overly fond of her voice, but the song was nice.

Wow...didn't mean to change the original topic of this thread...I'll shut up & go to bed now.

OOOOoooo I forgot the Corrs. Bad bad me.
I totally dig Sharon Corr for her violin, Andrea Corr for her vocals and tin whistle.
Makes me wonder what else they can do with those fingers

I had emergency dental surgery done today and while there, under the lidocaine etc. I heard the hygentist humming, then I realized I was too, then the dentist joined in. All I could think off was earlier here where someone wondered what life would be like if every so often we broke out in a song and dance. I started laughing, honest I tried not too. The dentist stopped whatever she was doing to make sure I was okay. I tried explaining but I think she thought, and still thinks, I was having a wacky reaction the the drugs. Just wanted to thank you all for helping me through this.
Thanks....
