In The French Connection, Popeye Doyle goes around smashing cars and entire neighborhoods. At the end he accidentally kills a fellow law enforcement agent, one of the worst mistakes a cop can make. All of that is fiction, even though the rest of the movie is based on real events.

In this scene, the cop knows he's trouble because he accidentally fires shots through through the windshield of a car. He's also in trouble because he fired towards another officer in plain clothes.
