He's going to be fucked, since the GOP doesn't give a fuck about post-service military these days. It's good though, since he's a mechanic, and has been making good gear head contacts out in San Diego.

SeaBee's got it made tho man...if he keeps his nose clean and stays on the ball they get paid post military. Many a well paid foreman were BU's....it's not Rockefeller status but life will be comfy if he doesn't totally fuck off every opportunity that gets dropped in his lap. Which it sounds like he's not. I have a friend who was a BU1....he retired and walked into a 180k a year job running a big boy construction op.

Pure combat arms (tanker, infantry, artillery) those are the folks that are fucked....they don't have any civilian sector crossover skills, so outside of the ultra rarefied defense contractor positions (weapons research/blackwater/triple canopy) you're DONE, unless you do your own thing. You either submit to the single wide/hood rat lifestyle or chase paper on your own because no one in the civilian world even wants them around for liability....can't even be a fuckin' mall cop unless you can prove you never saw combat and sit through like 4 years of therapy/evaluations to make sure you wont PTSD out on someone. Then maybe you can apply...it's ridiculous.

He's friends with someone on an NHRA crew and has a standing offer once his service is over. I've put him in contact with a few NASCAR and IndyCar PR people for teams. He can write his own ticket once he's out.

I worked at a Navy research facility as an "independent computer contractor." I was flabbergasted at how much more we contractors were paid over those in the military were receiving: We could go to lunch at restaurants every day, while they had to brown bag it.
