Firefly

Jayne looked at the woman and laughed loudly. He knew that it would surprise her which is what she wanted but he knew also knew the type of trouble she was in, seeming as Mal was in the same trouble and always would be until the day that Niska died.

He bent down and picked Vera up off the floor, all the while keeping his eyes on the woman and said, "That is funny as this crew is in the same way with Niska. Well Mal is actually but what he does puts us all in jeopardy. He took a job with Niska and kind of didn't deliver on the goods so Niska wants us all dead and this ship, preferably in that order but I will not give him that chance as I kind of like it here. Now, why don't you tell me your name so that I at least know what to call you and then decide what I am going to do with you."

He placed Vera down next to him and kept looking at her, wondering what it was they were going to do next, especially with Niska after them and Mal wounded as he was.

"Yeah, everything is just shiny down here. Are things shiny with you? How is Mal doing?"

she stopped for a bit and pondered. things didn't sound right down there but Jayne was a big boy and could handle himself.

"I'm not sure how mal is doing, haven't checked on him yet. Too busy worrying about you."

She began down the ladder.

"I'm coming down there

Jade's eyes widened when he laughed and she pouted at him, crossing her arms and staring at him. "I already told you my name, its Jade," she said... then she heard the other woman's voice coming down the ladder. Her eyes went really wide this time and her breathing became hard and fast. Between pants, she said, panick clear in her eyes, "I know about you! Malcolm Reynolds.. and.. and... Serenity!! Please, help me! Please... I beg you, don't throw me out of the airlock, I swear I'll be no trouble, you can drop me off at the next planet, just as long as I get away from Niska, please!"

She eyed the ladder in wide eyed panick, her earlier composure shattered as she realised that at least one more person would soon know about her. She fervently hoped that Jayne decided to handle matters in her favour...

Jayne heard the footsteps on the ladder and looked up to see Kaylee at the top of them. As much as he wanted to see her come down the steps there would still be the explanation of how Jade got into his room. He turned to look at her now and saw that her eyes were wide and knew that he had to do something quickly.

"Wait right here and whatever you do do not make a sound. I will try and stop her from coming down here but we will have to tell her sooner or later that you are here. You cannot hide here all the time and this is a fairly small ship.... not to mention River." He rolled his eyes when he said her name then moved to the ladder and began to move up it.

He almost ran straight into Kaylee halfway up the steps and told her that he was coming up, hoping that she wouldn't insist on coming down.

"Heya Jayne, Talkin to yourself again." As she made her way down te ladder.

She tried to get a look around him to see what was going on but his form filled her view.

"You're no fun." swatting playfullyat his chest."I'm off to see Mal and if her is doin alright and shiny. Maybe I'll see Simon too" as she wandered back up the ladder

talking to odin

OOC: Sorry dragonrazor.. was taking a long nap in the sun... :cathappy:

IC:
As they talked Inara led Odin to her shuttle. the room is filled with silks in dark reds and browns. Central to the room is a beautifully constructed wooden (at least it looks wooden) four poster bed with the curtains closed. She leads him to one side where a comfortable couch and chairs are arranged with a short table in the center of them obviously for conversation. She gestures to one of the chairs, "Please sit Odin, make yourself comfortable", smiling sweetly at him she reaches for a wine colored curtain and devides the bed from their sitting place. "I don't know if I have told you, but I am a licenced Companion. But I want to assure you, I have not brought you here under the pretense of making a transaction." She stands facing him, her hands clasped in front of her just below her waist, "instead I would offer you some hot tea?"

She awaits his pleasure...

Odin smiled, then nodded. "Green, if you have it. With lemon and honey, please." He went about examining her accomodations. He found them tastefully done, if a little old fashioned. Still, it was very impressive, all things considered. He wondered if she had joined Mal's crew to make him more respectable. She certainly seemed to care enough about him for that.

Jayne stood there and watched Kaylee walk away with a smile on his face then turned and looked down the ladder again. He knew what he was doing was stupid, especially with what they were now going through but he believed her and he would risk his own life to see that she was alright. He moved to the ladder, grabbed it and moved down slowly, wondering what Jade would do when she moved down into his room.

As soon as he was down the bottom he turned and looked at her.

"It is alright. Everything is all shiny now."

Kaylee made way along the ship towards the medical bay. She watched thought the glass and watche mal lying there.

"C'mon capt' you can make."

She stood their for a while before she felt someone behind her.

Simon had made his way behind her without her barely noticing.

"Heya, how's the capt.?"

I believe he'll do fine. It's up to him wether or not he makes it."

"Thanks." She leaned up and pressed her lips to him.

"It is alright. Everything is all shiny now."

She dreaded him going up those stairs... but dreaded him coming back down them all the same. She let out the breath of air she had been holding in since his disappearance and sighed. Blinking slowly she settled back onto the bed, sitting comfortably, folding her hands in her lap. She raised her eyes delicately towards his and offered a wavering smile. "So... what now?" she asked hesitantly. "You're not going to turn me in later? Are you?"

Ahh now she owed him a debt. Damn.

Jayne looked at her and let a smile come to his face then moved slowly towards the bed, his eyes still on her. He knew that she was trapped here with him in his room because there was nowhere that she could go but he remembered how Mal and himself had let his guard down because of Saffron and more recently River and he would not let that happen. His hand went to his back, to where his knife lay and he watched her to see what she would do. He knew that he was being paranoid but it had gotten him out of so many scrapes that he had learnt to trust his instincts.

"I am not going to turn you in and you will just have to trust me about that. I know that you have no idea what type of person I am and I will tell you this now. If you give me any reason to think that I will benefit from turning you in then I will do so without you even knowing it. Trust me when I say that I will. Just so you know what will be going through my head."

He moved back to the ladder and once again leaned against it, a very large smile on his face.

"It is your time to say something now. You can try and convince me why it would be in my best interest to keep you here."

Odin and Inara

"Green tea it is," she smiled sweetly at him.

She began the tea ritual. Flawlessly she preformed it and once it was finished she smiled openly at Odin. "I am glad you came. Though I am sure I don't know why. . . " Her face clouds for just a moment, then the smile returns, "Mal, is such an idiot, but even so... He is a good captian." She picks up the teapot... smiling devishly, "as long as we NEVER land anywhere.... which actually hurts my business. Sometimes it is hard to make ends meet for me here on Serinity. I never remember, ever cancelling a meeting with a client until I boarded this ship." For a moment Inara looks about the room wistfuly, smiles to herself then looks back at Odin with the same dreamy smile. "But she is home and usually safe and on some level she feels alive and loving to me."

She shakes herself giggling. "Oh,you must think me sucha an old fashioned fool... More tea?" Without waiting for his answer she refils his cup...

Odin sipped at the tea, listening to the woman. She seemed to need to talk, to get things off her chest, so he just listened. This woman was unusual, from what he had heard of Companions. And he thought he could sense the slightest bit of affection at the mention of Mal. Which would make sense, considering she stayed on the ship. He thought carefully, his thoughts slowly drifting to what had happened on the planet. Clearly, Mal had either botched a job, or made an enemy. Considering what Odin knew of Mal, it could very likely be both. The thought made him smile.

Angelus said:
"It is your time to say something now. You can try and convince me why it would be in my best interest to keep you here."

Jade blinked. Then she sighed, "I got on the wrong boat, didn't I?" she gave him a sidelong gaze and shrugged. "I don't know what I can say to convince you, I've already told you my sob story. I don't know what else to try," then she smiled suggestively. Leaning forward just a tad to accentuate the curves that could barely be seen under her overshirt. Her full red lips pouted slightly and her eyes seem to widen slightly... suggestively.

So, he'd turn her in if he could make a profit, would he?

She smiled again, her mind ticking over, trying to get herself out of this obviously bungled situation. "You know, Niska would love to personally meet the person who handed me in. He's very fond of me, you know... and if he were to learn that it was you... one of Mal's notorious crew... as I'm sure he would find out, he would VERY much like to meet you," she made a show of studying her immaculately laquered nails, raising her eyes to meet his, "Do you like being chained to a wall and tortured?" she bared her teeth in an unfriendly manner, "If you do, I'm sure Niska would be all to happy to oblige that fantasy were you to hand me in,"

She tilted her head to the side and smiled at him, "I'd make sure if it,"

Jayne leaned back and laughed loudly. He knew that a chance for a reward would be a major thing but he could not trust Niska, especially after what Mal did to him. Well Mal and everyone else on this ship.... him especially. That brought a smile to his face when he remembered the fun that he had had in that satelite. He just wished that they had given him enough time to get some of the money he knew was hidden on that satelite but after they had saved Mal they had gotten out of there. That alone annoyed him and now this woman in front of him was telling him to go back there.....

He laughed again.

"You want me to take you back to Niska? Do you know as soon as I get there, as soon as we get there that we will be killed. Have you not been told what he did to Mal, who deserved it by the way but he was nearly killed. I cannot say that the money is not tempting but you will stay here on this ship.... I will not take you back there."

She smiled, inwardly laughing to herself. That buffoon actually thought that she had been pleading him to take her back. No matter, it had turned out how she wanted it to so it was all good.

"Thank you Jayne," she said softly, her eyes sparkling up at him. What a strange man she had entangled herself with this time. Oh well, at least he wasn't as bad as Niska... or so she hoped at least.

Anybody on the wrong side of Niska were either of two things. Very dangerous, or very stupid. From the stories running riot about the little ship Serenity, it seemed that the crew were equal parts of both.

She smiled again. "So, what now?"

Kaylee stopped and pulled back.

"I have to get back to the engine room. Made a big 'ol mess. You know how it is."

He nodded and kissed her on the forhead as she turned to leave.

"Take care of the capt'n and tell him I'll kill him if he dies."

She made her way back down the corridor. She could hear Jayne Talking to someone. A female voice came from his quarters.

"Heya Jayne, You ok down there. I thouhgt I heard someone."

Inara talks to Odin

She watched the man Odin, drinking tea and she was suddenly aware she'd been chattering non-stop since they met.

"Odin, I am so sorry, I have just been prattling on... I guess all the excitement on the planet.. then Mal and meeting you, an unexpected friend..." she smiled prettily, her dark eyes assesing him, "has me a little on edge and chatty. I am very sorry I have gone on so..."
She changed her postion turning her knees away from him and leaning back on the couch. Taking a deep breath, breathing in the aroma of the tea as she closes her eyes, she visibly relaxes herself.

When she feels calmness, she opens her eyes slowly and smiles. "That is the first time I have taken a moment to slow down my thoughts." she sits forward again but with less rigidtiy and places her own cup of tea down upon the table, then folds her hands daintily in her lap. "As soon as you are ready we can go meet the rest of the crew. If you'd like to freshen up, or anything, I have full facilities", she gestures to a corner of the room obscured by silk curtains, " that you are welcome to use."

Odin smiled. He had let her ramble. Talking did wonders for people under stress. When she spoke to him, apologizing repeatedly, he shook his head. "It's...no bother. Talking things out helps people get rid of stress. Well, I suppose we could go see the rest of the crew. I also want to check your sensor array, make sure we weren't followed."

Inara smiled, "You, Odin, are too kind." her eyes suddenly serious. "Yes, you are right." She stood gracefully, motioning to the door, "shall we go then?"

Odin stood to his feet, then followed the woman. She definitely had an interesting way of walking. Companions were rare on Alliance ships. They usually kept to civilian ships. He grinned, as his mind compared them to the Geishas of old Earth.

and we're walking...

They made their way to the med center.

"Hello doctor," Inara smiled and gestured towards the man she was leading, "this is Odin, the man who saved Mal.... I invited him dinner to meet the crew, he has some ideas how to assist us in finding a new pilot." trying not to look overly concerned, though her heart was racing, "H-how is the Captian...?"

OOC: Hope nobody minds but the story seems to have stalled again and I suddenly had some time to write. It's long and doesn't have any real impact on the story yet. If you like it I can try to continue adding in with you guys when I have spare time. If not, pretend it's a whole season of Dallas. I've broken it up into 3 parts to make it easier to read but wrote it as one long one.

IC: She felt cool grass pass between her toes as she strode tall through the woods, her soft summer dress waving gently. The light streamed in, cutting swords of brightness between the overhanging branches and shimmering off the drifting mist that covered the ground. All around her, River heard the quiet echoes of the forest as she wandered purposefully, yet aimlessly toward an unseen destination. Such was her grace that she seemed to glide across forest floor, not so much walking forward as the forest floating backwards beneath her.

River’s face was a mask of calmness. Her eyes, focused in the distance, gave no clue as to what was driving her on this journey. She only knew she needed to go … go forward … go somewhere.

Brushing a branch out of her path, a sudden shiver traveled through her entire soul. River had stepped into a woodland meadow in full bloom as the forest closed behind her. The scent of wild flowers hung heavy in the air and she breathed deeply, allowing the sun to warm her upturned face.

Distant laughing attracted her attention. She squinted towards the sound and saw two figures cresting the top of a nearby hill. They were small children no older than 8 and 12 chasing each other and rolling down the slope.

The younger one, a girl, froze when she saw River. Her soft features seemed familiar and River smiled and waved. The raven haired child seemed to have a sense of recognition as well and broke into a wide giggling grin. The older, dark haired boy searched for what was so funny when his eyes fell on River. The boy smiled also, waving at River and motioned her towards them.

As River started towards the pair, the boy grabbed the little girl by the hand and started dragging her back up the hill. The two ran and played, back to the top and then waited for River to catch up. Getting entangled in the enthusiasm of the children, River snickered at this game of “catch-me-if you can” and raced after the pair. She was no farther than 7 meters away when the children darted off again laughing and disappearing over the hill.

Running faster, River reached the top and saw the children sprinting down the other side of the rise. They were running towards a man and woman seated 30 meters away on a wide blanket. Another shiver caused River to pause her pursuit. This time it was much stronger and she felt as if her guts were going to be drawn out of every pore of her young body.

The children were oblivious to her discomfort and didn’t even glance back at her in their race towards the adults. When the man and woman looked back and saw the approaching pair of little terrors, their faces warmed and they opened their arms to receive them.

River sensed it. BAD. DANGER. Her mind rang the message over and over in her brain. Her senses were overwhelmed by the intensity. River fell to her knees, hands pressed against her ears to drive out the pain. Her eyes slammed tightly as she fought to regain control, sobbing in the effort.

River looked up and saw in the distance, past the four people, a glowing light that seemed to hang in the air just a few feet off the ground. It was gliding gently towards them. The adults had noticed the light too. They stood and stared at the confusing sight trying to comprehend what it was. The boy and girl where also puzzling at the odd brightness coming towards.

Fighting off the pain, River forced herself to her feet and ran towards the enthralled group. With each step she took the world around her got darker. A bright summer day turned to dusk then to night . Each step caused her head to throb harder under the pressure of some immense weight and the pain became burning knives flaying the skin off her flesh. In contrast, each of Rivers footfalls made the light glow brighter until it was as blinding as a thousand suns. Finally the pain overcame River again causing her to trip and fall, clawing at the ground.

The light stopped less than 2 meters from the children and adults and began pulsing. The group seemed unaffected by the piercing brightness, standing immobile and calm. All around was deathly quite expect for Rivers cries of pain. She saw the four figures silhouetted in the stream of light cast off by the eerie flashing. It started pulsing faster, growing brighter with each flicker.

Without warning 3 of the silhouettes burst into flame. Thick smoke filled the night air with the smell of burning flesh. River could contain her suffering no longer and began to vomit. Her attention was brought back to the group by ungodly screaming. She looked up and saw 3 figures writhing in flames before the light, screaming their last breaths. Soon they were still, the screaming silenced and with only the putrid smell of cooked meat left. Tears streamed down Rivers cheeks as she stared at the spectacle.

Its mission accomplished, the light dimmed to a manageable intensity still pulsing in the darkness. Burning ashes were all that remained of the three infernos and River could now make out the remaining figure. It was the little girl. She had been spared the fate of the others. The young girl did not seem phased or frightened by the grisly sight she had witness and still stood, emotionless and passive. The light once again began to move, more slowly this time, towards the little girl. It stopped just in front of her and an eerie white hand reached out from within the shimmer of light. Without hesitation the girl took the hand in her little palm.

The light and the youngster started to move away from River who was still curled up in pain watching. The girl looked back at River as she was lead away. The light caused her impassive face to glow a sickly white and her eyes burned an empty sadness into River. All sound seemed to be stolen from the world. The little girl mouthed something.

River didn’t need to hear what the girl had said. She could feel the words enter her. Each word assulted her with wells of agonizing pain. She could feel the power in the meaning of the words and it was a power that was too frightful to face. It was a sign. It was a warning.

“Fire by night,
Hands of White.”

River screamed, the sound being swallowed up by the emptiness of this place.
