First Tattoo Placement

Fair enough. But that lovely bat does need a place where whoever is gazing at it can see it in all it's splendor. On your bicep, the wings would curve, and the whole image wouldn't be immediately recognizable. Between the shoulder blades, however, the bat could spread its wings and be seen all at once.

Imagine what an impression it'd make as you remove your shirt ;)

Also, assuming this won't be your only tat, you may want to save your biceps for something that you can develop on down the arms if your choose.

Just something else to consider. Of course, you could have the tattoo artist put mock-ups on your arm to see what it looks like, and then on your back to see what that looks like. Yes?

Yes. I'm pretty much set on between the shoulder and I already know who I'm going to show it too.

So in the highly unlikely event that I ever decide to get one, where is a good place for a first tattoo on a pain-adverse ursine?

My first one was on my thigh and there wasn't any pain at all with it.
The other two, completely different. They were right on bone and, as others have pointed out, that's when they hurt.

Only you can decide where you want to put one and be happy with it.

It takes me months, years, to decide on a new haircut. Something permanent is out of the question.

I don't have that problem, I love change.
I want the next tat to fit in with what I have, and to mean something special to me.

Another question though, do i shave the area or do they do that there?

I have plenty of tattoos id have to say this is something you need to decide for yourself. Get it on whatever part of your body that YOU think is cool. Not us!!

I'm getting a tattoo, my first one. The problem being I can't decide where to place it. I'm thinking either my forearm or between my shoulders.

The problem being I would have to resize it for my forearm but on my back I wouldn't be able to see it. Of course showing it off on my back would be a lot more fun.

Thoughts?

I went with back as I felt it offered a better surface not only to complete it on, but also long term (even if I gain or lose weight, my back is going to stay the same kind of thing).

Hmm..ok so i have read all these post and here's my thoughts.
Fatty areas are the most painful to get tattooed. Rib cage is tough because its a thin lair of skin..the bone really doesnt have much to do with it. Under your arms is painful because of the fat content.
Now i have 16 tats in various locations...i have never had one i would consider to be "pain" The best way to describe what it feels like (if done right) is an irritated sunburn. Nothing to harsh. Personally the neck area is the easiest. i have three there and fell asleep through all of them.

As for the original suggestion of a bat...depending on size and your shape of the bat..i.e. are it wings outstretched or is it in flight, profile shot or front on..your back is a good starting place. either between your shoulders or as a tramp stamp. but they are sometimes hard to heal if you cant reach it to clean it and lotion and stuff. and it makes sleeping rough depending on how you do that.

all merely my opinion.

and they will shave you but if you are really hairy its just polite to do it yourself and let them touch it up. if you go to a legitimate shop, they will clean the area with alcohol and shave you where they need and a little around. cleanliness when getting tattooed is just being polite.

Thank you for your input everyone, now I just have to wait to get it done. Waiting sucks.
