Gardening: Plants, Flowers, Veggies, Trees and All Things Green

Mine do the same every year. I’ve tried various ways of containing them but then they don’t look natural. I can’t bring them in the house because I have curious cats. 🙄 I’m actually going to try fishing line this year to see if that will help…probably not but it’s worth a try.
I have cats too and never thought of that 🤔. I know many plants are poisonous but I never thought about flowers just. Did you ever notice there’s a ton of ants in them also. So when I do bring them and I I bang them a few times to get the answer off, yuck!

I looked it up..it’s Honey Garlic ‘Allium Siculum’

Allium siculum, known as honey garlic, Sicilian honey lily, Sicilian honey garlic, or Mediterranean bells, is a European and Turkish species of plant in the genus Allium. It is native to the regions around the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and grown in other regions as an ornamental and as a culinary herb.

Not only are ants NOT harmful, they are actually an example of biological mutualism. The peonies provide nectar (food) for the ants; the ants protect the peonies from aphids, thrips, and other non-beneficial insect pests.

I always thought you needed the ants so the buds would open…turns out that is a myth. They will open without any ants present.

Thank you llidar and Lilly.

I am glad they are Sicilian. La cosa nostra (it’s our little thing.)

They are badass plants. I won’t tell my daughter, tho, she always called them explosion plants since she was a little kid. I will let my wife know, tho. 😂 she will be fascinated.

Thanks for the two of you for your detective work.

That’s cool, I just don’t want them in my house :D

I planted these pumpkins about three weeks ago, because I wanted them to be ready for the 4-H fair in August. They got off to a rocky start and were yellow and probably overwatered. I thought they were going to not make it, but I stopped watering them a little bit, and they appear to be much better.

I’m trying really hard to turn my black thumb green. Last year I purchased these banana plants to put around the pond..they never really came up and I convinced myself I killed them before they even had a chance..but just LOOK at them now and that new leaf coming out 😍
