Halloween Contest Support Thread

I decided to forgo fiction and write a true Halloween story.

I've completed the first two chapters and nearly have chapter three. So, far, it's only 15,000 words, but I'm aiming for 60,000 words. I have two months. I think that I can do it.

Why don't you refine what you've already got into something that's worth the effort?

Meaning that what I already have isn't refined? Actually, I think that it's already very good. I'm certain, the way the contests are run around here, that it is no contest winner (lol). Yet, you may be pleasantly surprised by the serious effort that I put in every piece that I write.

Besides, I'm not one to abandon what I have to continue with the next chapter. I continually return to the beginning of the piece to tweak it and to make it better.

Thanks for your suggestion.

You never know Freddie, you never know. I thought my last contest entry was only there to make up the numbers too.

I read somewhere - no wait - I heard on NPR that Raymond Carver's editor routinely cut 70% or more out of every one of his stories, and RC didn't do to bad in the realm of published works.

Taking the flash fiction approach, I think it's possible to distill any story down the the bare essentials, and then flesh it back out again, resulting in a more concise and compelling read. But that's also a stylistic choice, I suppose.

It's not that this needs to be bumped again.
I'm just using the lazy way of subscribing. Maybe I'll do a Halloween story. Been awhile since I've written...

Hard to believe, but I actually finished the first draft for a possible contest story a couple of days ago.

However, it is a bit of a volume monster - 45 word pages or 20,000 words, which, if my math skills don't fail me, could come up to something like 8 or more lit pages. I could split it up into chapters, and with that in mind I actually started writing it - but now I am not so sure anymore, as I rather had it judged as a coherent whole (hope I'm making sense here).

To those veterans of the contest wars - what do you think, is that a bad idea, to post something that involved to a readership not exactly famed for a long attention span?

Leave it whole. A lot of people won't vote on a chapter story in a contest. I kept Bound whole (18K words and 49 Word pages) and it was in the winners circle for Valentines day. BDSM and Valentines, who knew. :D

I have two stories fairly well finished and a possible third if i can find the time.

Thanks, that was the answer I was hoping for. Now I just have to find the energy to pre-edit and rewrite bits and pieces - that nasty part that reeks of actual work...

I know the feeling. i can write four stories while i edit one.

I have an idea from years ago that I might write, but it's not erotic, just... weird. And perhaps a little funny, in a tragic way. But it could always go into Non-Erotic, I suppose... Or Humor&Satire. Or Horror. Or either one of the three, with a tag explaining that it belongs as much to the other 2 cats as well.

Might be a way to kickstart my tentacle sex fetish. Like two politically correct academics from the History Department go to a party thrown by Genetics and Horticultural Science . . .

Or possibly Astronomy, you never know.

I suppose I could try and finish that one story I've been working on. Then again, maybe it's too much of a love story. That and I still don't know if I want to start posting stories again.
*walks off mumbling to self*

On page 4?

I'm getting ideas. So is Jeanne.

But we're not getting them written.

My excuses? Running a two-week festival AND having builders bashing the house about - but I could have, and should have, written something.

I have an idea that's fairly fleshed out. Just have to see if it flows once I open a blank document to start it :p

i've started writing something. have to see what becomes of it, though.

I've finished mine. :D

It'll be in the Erotic Horror cat. My old favorite, languishing as of late.

So many ideas, so little time. :(
