Have you ever been drawn...

I prefer to draw from life. I do use photo reference for many projects, but mostly to enhance detail — drapery, structure, context, quirky lighting etc...

Not long ago, someone requested a drawing of "herself" and sent a pic, cropped with no face. I let it sit for a while, then gave it a go and extended the image, which I used as "inspiration" (no need to slavishly reproduce, cuz...why?)

I posted and PM'd a link. no response.

At least it was something to do in a rare idle moment.

Next semester I won't be teaching, I hope that I can weasel that time back into some drawing. Though there are some other pressing projects which have been neglected.

I didn't seek it out, but I've been drawn twice - and both times were fully clothed.

The first time, it was because I was the worst person in the class when it came to that type of art; the second time because a local art group wanted a fresh model and I needed the cash (not much - but a free lunch was included).

I've also sat as a fill-in figure while somebody worked out what a hand would look like in (what I told the painter was) a completely artificial pose which nobody would really do.

None of those times was a turn-on. Having to keep even your eyes still while being talked to, at, and about, by several people in different places is difficult, but at least I had an easy pose to hold.

It was an interesting experience, because during the breaks there was a chance to walk round looking at the half-finished work. Several people changed more than one feature ("I'm sorry, I just can't draw noses" etc), some made the image a lot prettier and more animated, others plain verging on grotesque - very telling indeed!

I still have two rolled up copies from that second group, because the artist was so unhappy with them that she was going to bin them. They weren't terrible, they just weren't what she'd been aiming for.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.
The "business" of posing and drawing/painting is often rather intense and focused, but once in a while, one's mind, just might wander......;)

I was drawn as a teenager by someone who found me an intriguing subject at the library.

Did they ask? Or did you just happen to notice?

must make this a priority again — drawing from life, if not in a studio setting, then at least at the café.

A friend wanted to draw me in the nude. I have seen some of his work, not nudes, and he is very good. He just couldn't figure out how to get away with it without his wife finding out! Hahahahaha

In some situations that can be problematic.

Was for me once. The wife of a good friend of me asked me to draw her naked, because she knew he was a fan of my work. I did. Nothing unprofessional happened. When I told the wife about it, she had a canary.

Were you comfortable during the process?
Did you know the artists?
Were you happy with the results?
Was he happy with the results?

Yes, I was comfortable in my own skin so it did not bother me. I did not know the artist personally but knew someone who recommended him. Eh, are women ever satisfied when they see a rendering of themselves. My BF loved it...said it was beautiful and the best gift I could have given him. That was enough to satisfy me.

I have done many many life drawings... a life painting is something to give a go at.

I need a studio away from home.

oh...wait! I kinda HAVE one

Sadly, I spend the bulk of my time there doing paid design work...

I guess I need to be independently wealthy or have an art patron. (sugar momma);)

Can't complain. :)

:rose:

We can always complain (and often do) . Though we probably shouldn't.

Of course, sometimes it's therapeutic to vent.:)

To go all stupid and talky as I am wont to do— complaining can also be self-fufilling, or addictively destructive, eh?

Howz that for taking a simple response and dissecting it to death? LOL

ANYWAY!!! I like to draw people.:D

Took art classes in college. The model for the next class didn't show up and I took one for the team. It was hard to look at the professor in the eye for a few months after that. The poses were very exposing.

So, you were DIRECTED, as to the poses? hmmm...

interesting.

I recently went to talk by former coworker/illustrator at my old University. I had to park behind the Art School, though the talk was in a different building. Walking through, I thought back, fondly of my time there. I should check on the local art center about drop-in life drawing, which I used to attend weekly.

It even occurred to me to do some modeling — obviously one does not need to be a "model" (beautiful), but having knowledge of posing is a big plus. I came to my senses. :)

Does the university have an evening figuring drawing class they offer to the public? The grad students runs it here. Pop in when you want, use any medium, I think it’s around 10$ a session. Pretty much pays the model(s).

Not my University, last time I checked (though they have, in the past).
Another, nearby University has had drop-in sessions.

The Art Center has been the best bet, as it is quite close to home, I could walk or bike. (and have). They changed the hours, which made it inconvenient, so I stopped.
edit: Just search the art center's web-site...none listed. sad.

I'll do some more exploring. I may have mentioned in an earlier post — a few classmates and I hired models after graduation, at that time one of us had a large studio. I have a space now...

Hi you guys! 🙋

I'm certainly no 'model,' but for some reason it appeals to me to pose. To see myself through another's eyes, perhaps? :)
