And yeah, my submissive and I occasionally notice BDSM references in mainstream television shows (overtly positive or negative) or commercials (usually neutral). Things that show up in the newspaper or evening news are generally 99% negative, but then again most anything in the newspaper is bad news so it is at least partly a function of the medium.

The funny thing is, we're attuned to noticing the same thing as regards gunnery - odd, that. From what I gather it is as easy to be overtly a gun-owning male in San Francisco as it is to be an overtly gay and/or submissive male in your average midwest US small town, and both seem to be based on newspaper bad-news bias and general mainstream media lack of familiarity.

Webcomics aren't precisely mainstream, but they're not too awful far off. "Questionable Content" is one that I read on a regular basis, and Jeph wrote in a storyline where the main character's mother comes for a visit. She turns out to be a fetish model and prodomme. Part of what I really dug about the story arc is that it is utterly normal for Martin, the lead character, because she's his mom. He grew up with it. Some of the other characters are a bit stunned, but the presentation is solid enough to be normal and conversational.

Oddly enough, it is about how I would imagine it would go if I found out that one of my friends' moms was a fetish model and prodomme.
