Historical Sex, Anytime

Yeah, at first I even thought maybe I should say something like "100 years" instead of "50 years" - but then 100 years would be to much I think.
When I wrote this, I had to think about the "roaring 20s". Al Capone and the Mafia in Chicago. Just look at the Movies "Some like it hot" with Marilyn Monroe, or "Once upon a time in America" ...

As for the modern-day woman ending up in the late 1800s ... that is also a very good idea. Just think: She is very open minded, she has no problem to flirt with a man or to talk open about sex. And she has no problem with showing her body. So she is skinny-dipping in a lake, when some cowboys ride by the lake. She gets out of the lake - and a normal woman would instantly cover her nude body - but she doesn't ....

I really don't think of the "roaring 20s" as "historical" in the context in which we are speaking. Just MHO, of course *grin*. I mean, my mom was born in 1922. Even though I once called her my own personal antique (she didn't think it was very funny!), I really don't think of that in "historical" terms.

Nascar, the scenario you mentioned above reminds me of a book I read not too long ago. It was a (no laughter, please) Harlequin Western Historical romance. The woman was from the 1990s and got sent back to the 1800s. The farmer whose property she landed on was a widower with 3 small children. He had placed an ad for a nanny/housekeeper to take care of the kids. Well, naturally he thought she was that person, especially since the she just happened to have been on her way to a job interview! She couldn't make him understand that his job ad wasn't the one she was responding to, and she didn't want to tell him about her little (?) dilemma. Anyway, since she didn't have any "suitable" clothing, he let her have his late wife's clothing (waste not want not), because she just happened to be the right size (naturally!). She found a corset cover and wore it as a shirt! The farmer was shocked at first, but after a while he secretly began to enjoy seeing her in it (no duh!).

About the skinny-dipping part you mentioned...I don't know. I think if I was in that situation, I would sure cover myself as best I could, even in this day and age! lol

(1) I think a combined historical thread would be great. Good stories set in historical times are hard to find, and this would be a great help.
(2) Having said that, I would vote for settings of at least eighty years prior to the present. Started to vote for 100 years, but that would eliminate WWI and thereabouts.
(3) BLACKADDER gets highest recommendations. Extremely witty, and the puns roll by so fast that it's great for repeat viewings (you can always catch new things). Baldrick is one of the great characters of all time!!!
(4) BACK TO THE FUTURE...someone mentioned wanting to get that. You may want to hold off on getting the trilogy. Evidently there's a glitch in the framing on Part II and Part II (goes suddenly to pan & scan, thus missing some sight gags). Not bad enough to ruin the movie, but a corrected version is supposed to come out in a month or so. I'm going to return mine (unopened)to Amazon Canada in exchange for the corrected version. For more details, go to DVDTalk.com and open the "DVD Bargains" forum.

I'm the one who mentioned getting the Back to the Future trilogy. Thanks for the heads up on that glitch! I'll wait for the corrected version.

I'll go along with 80 years being the minimum, but I still tend to lean towards 100 years.

I love Rowan Atkinson. Where can I see this Blackadder? I'm in the US.

Well, I already own the Back to the Future Triologie. I have to say, I am not sure if I saw this glitch. But then, I have the european version - and I was surfing through the Internet, while I watched the movie, so I missed a few scenes.

The thing with Black Adder - it's really funny, that someone from the USA asks this.

I mean, look at this: The tv series is from the UK. In the UK, there is a box set available: 4 DVDs showing all parts of the series. But in the USA, there is a similar box set - but in this one, there are 5 DVDs. On the Millenium, they made a special Black Adder movie (that dealt with travels through the time - and how you can change history - by the way, in this movie, there was the skinny model Kate Moss) and it had the "Black Adder Christmas Story" (you know, this story from Charles Dickens about Scrooge and the 3 ghosts).

So I highly recommend to get the US-Version of the Black Adder series. You can find it on Amazon.

Thanks for the info. I suppose it isn't available on television?

Why is it so funny that an American asked this question?

Well, I guess it should also be on tv in the USA. I saw it a few times over here, on tv. Just about 2 months ago, they showed the whole series again.

However: Why is it so funny that an American asked this question?

Well, I just thought that it was a funny coincidence. The best version of this DVD Set is available in the USA, while in Europe there is only the lame UK Version, even though the tv series is from the UK ....

Rowan Atkinson is amazing. How the same man can go from being so icky-looking to such a total hottie (the beard, ruff, earring, and boots of the Elizabethan series gets my motor revving every time <g>) ... it's uncanny. Even better than the transformation between Arnold "Smeghead" Rimmer and Arnold "Ace" Rimmer.

I don't watch a lot of tv anymore, but will certainly look around and see if we get that here anywhere. We used to watch his show "Mr. Bean" or whatever it was called and loved it. Then we saw the movie and thought he was totally hilarious in it, too.

I see what you mean about it being funny that I asked. I guess maybe the reason we get the better set is because we might not get the series here and they want to tempt us? Who knows! LOL!

Rowan Atkinson looking hot? That I will have to see to believe! I've got to find this now, to see if he gets my motor revving, too!

well, I am a guy, so I can't say much about him being hot or not.

But I have to agree: When I compare his character "Mr. Bean" to "Black Adder" I think Black Adder is 10 times better and cooler. But then, Mr. Bean is just a total nerd in my eyes. I mean, Mr. Bean is funny - but still a nerd. Black Adder on the other hand is cool, witty - almost the total different then Mr. Bean

Mr Bean is rather disgusting, Black Adder is a hunk - except for in the 1400, then he was more like a cross between Bean and Adder.

I loved the Millenium special, with the time travelling and everything - an the ending..! Oh dear, oh dear..!

The King, nervous after an attack against his life, upon finding Baldrick inside a tiny cupboard:
-Aaaah! An anarchist!
Black Adder:
-No, your hignhess, that's just Baldrick, spring cleaning.
The King:
-Well, he looked like an oppressed mass to me!
Black Adder:
-Sir, in order to belong to the oppressed working class, he'd actually have to WORK.
:D :D :D

Well, have we come to any conclusions on the time-frame issue for an historical thread? Has Laurel been consulted?

I think we have established the ground rules.

  1. Stories must take place between beginning of time and the end of 1899.
  2. We will have one basic History Thread, and if that gets too big, we will later on split it up into different time periods.
  3. As for asking Laurel, before I PM her, do we want a Historical Thread, a Historical Forum or a Historical Story Category?
    [/list=1]

Me thinks that in the latter case, she will want to see that there are indeed people interested in having a Historical category, and she will probably ask us to show our interest by submitting a lot of Historical stories, perhaps with "HISTORICAL" mentioned in the notes-field.

  1. OK....so it appears that 1899 is the most recent date allowed. Now...as for thread, forum or category; IMHO, methinks that we could start with a thread or forum so we could see just how many people might be interesed in this idea, before we go to a whole new category. My vote would be for an historical forum, because a thread might get "lost".

    What thinks you?

Wow~! Just got home & checked in to see lots of activity on the board today. Being a relative newbie, I don't know if my vote will count, but I like Svenskaflicka's ground rules and BlueDaisy's idea to start with a forum...a good compromise between a thread and a story category.

This is a great idea. Make sure to update us in this thread!

Let's see if I can figure out how to attach a pic ... if it works, Blue, here's the dishy Edmund Blackadder.

Sabledrake

Ummm....not to be a spoilsport, but maybe we need a separate Blackadder thread! Not to complain too much about all the recent posts re: Rowan & his great show. If you haven't seen it and you like really witty comedy, try Blackadder. We have the set on video ( and I have seen the individual volumes at some Blockbuster stores if you want to sample the series. We saw the last (WWI) series first and loved it, then went back and saw the rest. Columbiahouse sells the set, and you can find used sets affordably on the net Some people might find it too "British", but it's actually more accessible than many of the PBS Brit comedies.
Besides Blackadder & Mr. Bean, has anyone recommended Rowan Atkinson's Brit comedy THE THIN BLUE LINE? It has a larger cast of recurring characters and is set in a modern British police station. Very, very amusing and cleverly written, although not on the classic level of BLACKADDER. You might check out Rowan's work in American films, too. I think of Rowan in the same vein as John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, & the rest of the Python cast...good either solo or as part of an ensemble cast.
How did out Historical thread ever get so far off topic????? I guess it shows that lovers of historial erotica are multi-dimensional!
