Just wanted to drop a line to my Houston Buds that I'm thinking about them. Good luck battening down the hatches for Rita!

Rita

I hope no one is in Houston right now to read this, but hope you are all safe and will be dry. Please leave just to be safe. Good luck ya'll.

I second that....hope you all know that we are thinking about you. :rose:

And you and yours as well! Take good care!

My idiot daughters are going to Austin for the City Limits Festival. I told them each separately (after the Mom speech about how foolish that is) to do me a favor and write their social securities numbers somewhere on their bodies (i.e. on their skin) in permanent marker.

I'm sure your girls will be safe there in Austin. I'll keep them in my thoughts and prayers too.

Let us know if you need anything....

Thank you! We're hunkered in now. I made one trip out to my ex-husband's shop. He gave me four packages of dry ice, a couple pounds of British sausages, a pound of British butter (I didn't know I was out, and there's a high chance it'll go bad at his place), a bottle of lucozade and Orange barley water plus about a dozen Cadbury candy bars. (Hey! Chocolate is an emergency supply you know!) In return, I helped him move stock from the lower shelves up higher in case of flooding.

I've now got one block of dry ice in the freezer, the refrigerator, and each of my two igloo coolers. I've positioned the cars as best I could: one on the street and one angled in very close to the house. I covered the picture window in the dining room and drew the blinds. I'm thinking about dragging an old box springs from the garage to lean against the sliding glass doors in the kitchen -- that's the only thing big enough to cover that window.

I chopped up tomatoes, green peppers and onions this morning -- putting each one in a zip loc bag and then in the fridge to minimize clean up when the power goes out. I'm going to do some baking in a bit -- cookies and muffins -- get as much cooked beforehand. And I've got to dig out the cards and games to a convenient place, because lord knows when this power goes out there isn't going to be much to do.

I'll keep cleaning as long as there's power. I've got another load to run in the dishwasher. I've been cooking all morning and putting stuff in tupperware in the fridge, so of course, my sink's full of pots and pans.

one add'l thing you should do is fill up any container (even the bathtub) you can with water (you'll thank yourself later on). There was a guy that did this in NO with Katrina and the people that stayed in the house were so appreciative of it, as it allowed them not only drinking water, but something to bathe with and such if water doesn't come on for several days - good luck - it's gotten windy around here in the last few hours, but no where near what will be blowing down your way

Sounds like you've got everything you'll need. :)

I used a box spring for covering a picture window here. It'll do in a pinch, lol.
Tell BB2 to take care of himself and you do the same.
Stay safe.....

We're good on the water. It's all under control. Getting windy here, but no rain ...yet.

yeah they say it'll be windy around here through tomorrow aftn - now just if people here in Austin would quit over reacting...then again just like when it threatens to snow and ice - they hit the grocery and clean the shelves bare, ending up with stuff later they have to throw out cause it wasn't as bad as they thought :D

We've got wind and a little rain now.....Hope y'all are holding up alright.

We're getting driving bands of rain, and strong gusts - but not much else. I hope everyone in Houston is holding up and is safe!

I lost power shortly after that^^^^ post...Back on now though! :nana:

Alright Texans, how'd you fair through the storm? Check in and let us know...

Just got power back. The whole neighborhood cheered at once ...everyone was either outside or had all windows open for air, so you could hear it all over. Pretty funny.

LOTS of wind -- branches and stuff in my yard, including a bunch of roofing tiles (not mine) and I lost part of my gutter in the back, all in all, not anywhere near as bad as we'd expected.

I just want to say that I really love my air conditioning!

Now where's everyone else?

We had the same bout of cheering in on our street too. LOL Nothing like cool air..... :)

local check in

I'm posting this here since it's getting buried on the GB and might get a bit more exposure here. Let us know if you hear from these folks or know of others that should be on the list:

I've combed back through the list of Houston folk and show them here. I hope everyone will see this and check in so we know they're okay. Any Greater Houstonians who check in that aren't on the list will be added to be notified of our next Lit-together.

People I'd like to see check in because they live in or near areas that were evacuated or directly hit by Rita. If you've heard from them, please let us know:

Glad to hear that you and BB are both ok. :)

Thanks. We were blessedly spared. For more information, go read my "We're Slammed" thread on the GB.
