How is all this Republican overreach going to play out in November 2014?

it's a fucking M O V I E for chrissakes

It's a terrible movie. The characters are cliche and not even remotely real, the story is just dumb, it's nothing at all like military life and they make Granada out to be more than it was.
It could be written off as "just a movie" and that'd be it but they present it as at least partially true. A complete disservice to Marines and especially Force Recon.

i respect your opinion since marine life means something to you, but my perspective's completely different. i found it competely entertaining, and not campy at all.

well maybe 10% campy, but whatever.

Ok....sorry but have you ever seen a movie about your chosen profession?

Yea...it's kinda like that man. Military folks hold war flicks to a whole new standard and they can usually count the military films they like on one hand and HBR just doesn't make the cut.

It's so unrealistic it's laughable.....it's like some kind of bad parody that takes itself way too seriously.

I understand and respect that you like it...but like I said, youz being a civi, that's all. It's not bad...you just don't know any better.

Yeah, it's just awful. Guys going back and forth to the brig, a Force Recon platoon thats completely undisciplined and apparently totally ignorant of all things military and what looks to be the worst and most lax base in the history of the US military.

LOL yea... I would have been pissed if they made a movie about Rangers being such ass clowns. I can't imagine FR or Marines in general being very big fans.

Most realistic scene.

You guys should elect a black muslim woman so all the old racist fucks finally have a stroke.

geez, i almost smell a marine corps 3-way in the making here...

So what are some good, realistic ones? (Not FMJ, I hope. I should hate to think real-life boot camp is run by psychotic idiots like Hartman/Ermey.)

Ermey was a real DI and a consultant for the film. Kubrick saw how good he was and hired him to act which wasn't really acting to him.
Otherwise FMJ sucks but the boot scenes are probably the most realistic. At least that I've seen.
It is difficult to get a whole lot of realism in military movies because they'd be boring. Sgt. Bilko might actually come close to the truth.

Well, there are many non-boring movies with no violence in them, and some of those are about characters who do boring jobs. It all depends on what kind of movie you're trying to make.

Yes there are but most of them aren't about the job. A movie about Football training camp would be boring as fuck too.

Unless it were about the characters. Heck, training-camp/school is a hoary well-used movie setting.

And they are almost never about training camp or school. It's just the setting and it's usually wrong for the same reasons, they're boring.
You can make a great movie about an accountant but you'll never make a great one about accounting.

Boot camp scenes were realistic for my era. The phoniest parts of the movie were, the recruit saving a live round off the range (never happen) and the combat tactics, scenarios, and those god awful rented palm trees.

Don't forget, Stanley Kubrick was a big leftist and his purpose in making the film was to destroy the image of the United States Marine Corps and undermine the war effort. He didn't count on Ermey stealing the show and having every Marine the world over laughing his ass off and nodding knowingly between themselves.

Your first paragraph was dead on then you went totally off the rails.
What war effort was Kubrick trying to undermine? And no he wasn't trying to destroy the image of the Marines and he knew full well Ermey was going to steal the show, it's why he was hired.

Hartman/Ermey's character was tame compared to real life but the closest I have seen on film.

Reality.

In real life Drill will fuck your shit up because he can....and he will continue to fuck your world up until he thinks you are adequately hard enough to earn your title, or you quit and go home an embarrassed bitch the rest of your fucking life. It's what they do...

Nah I didn't care much for the intro to FMJ....Kubrick did a pretty good job depicting the 'chaos' of urban combat considering when it was made...burst of action followed by stretches of boredom and bureaucratic bullshit. But that was about all it had.

Black Hawk Down was pretty on point with modern urban warfare and a lot of the technical/Army aspects....off historically, they didn't really get into what a cock sucker Clinton was about the whole thing putting our guys through a meat grinder like that and sacrificing so many soldiers to protect his politicking.... but pretty damn close for left tit sucking Hollywood.

Apocalypse Now was great.....it focused more on the people, the human experience instead of just getting as many booms and the highest body count possible on film.

Das Boot.....fucking amazing, prob b/c I have no real clue what it was like on a U boat but I thought it was a good flick.

U-571 and Hunt For Red October....I love sub flicks.

The Big Red 1 is classic...

Thirty Seconds over Tokyo.

And of course the greatest military documentary ever....

And I recall seeing it with a friend who remarked during the last scene, in the burning building, "Hollywood fires -- they aren't going anywhere."

But, OTOH, at least he did succeed in destroying the Corps' image, such as it was. (Not in undermining the war effort. 1987 was rather too late for that.)
