How Old Are You?

Hey, Let's all gang up on Earl

Earl-

Your AV doesn't bother me at all... it's just the long sig that is a bit tiresome.

:rose: b

Dear B Keeney,

It's so nice to find someone else who finds long signatures to be tedious.
This thread is about age. Anyone who reads Earl's sig will definitely be older by the time she's finished.

Sincerely,
Diane the Grumpy

DVS,
I suppose you could watch, keep score, or do color commentary.

people with glass AV's ....

MG-

Unless you are willing to promise to not change your AV again to one of you other delightful AV's: potty chair, cheeks, big butted baby... I am afraid your criticisms of Earl's AV don't hold any water.. so to speak... :D

Dear B Keeney,

Thank God you're here to maintain a modicum of sanity.

By the way, I just started a new thread. WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE CONTEMPORARY AUTHOR. I thought it would be interesting to see what we all read. Please give it a look and make a contribution.

Dear Bikini,

Remember the delightful avatars of GG2? They set the standards by which all other bad taste must be measured.

I am new here, and I am 26. Hope to post more thoughts, but right now I'm a newbie and therefore shy.

MsW, don't let anyone frighten you away just yet = )

Earl, I love red dwarf but for the life of me, and my boyfriend too, we can't figure out what that av is from. Not that I have any problem with it. I really do miss Mr Flibble, though...

Chicklet, who smiles EVERY time she see's Earls Sig (some people might find TURNING OFF the sig lines to be useful for them)

I know some people are going to be shocked at hearing me say this, and others will be mad at me for starting what I have no doubt will be a looooooooooooong explanation and debate, but...

what the heck is red dwarf????

A short little red person. They prefer "little people" to dwarf, actually.

Just funnin' with you, sweetie. Haven't you seen 'The Wizard of Oz' or read 'Little Women'?

No, I have no real answers. Just wize ass answers.

Red Dwarf

I will give you the very short version.

It is a English comedy program, about 5 assorted beings who are lost in space so to speak.

There is the hologram..
The android...
The cat......
The human guy..
The human girl..

oh yeah there is a computer too...its been a long time since i have seen it, but that is the basics....

To put it in a Swedish context, it is like Abba without the wheels or a Volvo without the singers.
In other words you have to see it to understand it.

But it is very funny.

Red Dwarf???

Svenskaflicka - Thanks for asking the question.

Red Dwarf is a British comedy sci-fi show set on a deep-space mining ship named "Red Dwarf."

After a radiation leak kills off most of the crew, the ship's computer (Holly) sends the ship out into space until the radiation level decreases to a safe level -- three million years later. At this point, he decides it is all right to release the last surviving crewman, Dave Lister, from a stasis chamber.

Lister had been put in stasis as punishment for refusing to turn over his pregnant cat, Frankenstein, to Quarantine. He's understandably distraught when he is revived to find he's three million years from home and alone, and the last human alive.

To keep him sane, Holly generates a hologramatic version of one of the other crew, Arnold Rimmer. It is, in Lister's opinion, the worst possible choice.

Meanwhile, the descendants of the cat Frankenstein have been breeding and evolving in the radiation-sealed cargo hold for three million years. The only remaining result is Cat, a felins sapiens humanoid.

These four mismatched adventurers -- Lister, Rimmer, Holly, and the Cat -- decide to turn around and set a course for Earth. Along the way, they are eventually joined by Kryten, an android originally created as a service and cleaning 'bot.

But, of course, no synopsis can do it justice. The show is hilarious. It's into something like its 8th or 9th season by now, so there should be plenty of videos or DVDs available. Rent them, keep your eyes peeled for a PBS or BBC marathon and tape the suckers, or shell out the cash and buy them. You won't regret it!

It is a humorous sci-fi series. Because it is sci-fi the normal limitations relating to time and logical plot do not really apply.
The fact is that some people (myself included) find it very funny whilst others (and that includes my wife) are totally unmoved by it.

I remember watching one episode and I was laughing so much the tears were rolling down my cheeks. My wife on the other hand was looking at me as if I was mad.

You can perhaps judge for yourself the merits or otherwise of the programme by the following exchange. It is not word for word (TheEarl might be able to recite it) but it goes something like this.

Holly (the ship's computer) has had her artificial intelligence dramatically boosted. She is in conversation with Talkie the Toaster (a talking toaster who also has a computer chip).

Holly: I know everything there is to know about everything.
Talkie: Everything?
Holly: Yes Everything!
Talkie: The origin of the universe?
Holly: Yes!
Talkie: Does God exist?
Holly: Yes! You can ask me anything you want! The chaos theory or relativity.
Talkie: Anything?
Holly: Yes!
Talkie: Right, my question is---- would you like a piece of toast?

Now do you have a better idea of what Red Dwarf is about?

The "Red Dwarf" thing sounds like a good theme for the old Monty Python bunch.

That was just what I was thinking. It does seem like Monty Python with a deep space kind of twist.

There is something about British humor that nobody else can create. They take it to the edge, over the edge, and around the corner all in one breath.

The U.S. has so many anal pathos who get their feathers ruffled over such things, that our humor has to be cleaned and pressed to accommodate the masses.

I have always loved the dirty and wrinkled type of humor of Monty Python, and this Red Dwarf sounds like something I would like, too.

So far, I've liked most Brittish comedy shows. More than American ones, actually. I think it's a European thing. :p

I am far more familiar with the books than the show, since you can only find the video's in very obscure stores here (sob, no dvd's yet) I have one or two eps on my comp, too...but the books, ah, they're excellent.

when's the movie coming out? they've been in production for like, what, ten or eleven years? <wink>
